Commandos 2: Men of Courage
Eidos Three years on from the original, Commandos 2 is everything a sequel should be—it expands the formula, learns from past mistakes and, as an extra bonus, is also an excellent game.

But here's a word of warning—this is a tough challenge, best suited to more experienced gamers who aren't afraid to invest time and thought into their gaming. The plot follows a small group of elite soldiers, each with their own particular strengths and weakness, whom you must guide through varying missions in an attempt to change the course of World War II. It's a scenario that is brought stunningly to life through genuinely superb graphics. And with much of the game reliant on stealth more than all out action, things quickly get incredibly tense.

For the sequel, new features have been added, such as the ability to steal enemy goods and the use of vehicles, but more significantly the game is much more fair, the varying difficulty levels and more flexible saving system making it easier to progress.

But what ultimate carries Commandos 2 through is its gameplay. It's still very tricky at times, and it may take you a while to beat some of the levels, but you'll barely notice. For this is a professional, extremely addictive and hugely enjoyable strategy game that deservers a wider audience than the original.—Simon Brew

Daikatana
Eidos John Romero, co-designer of Wolfenstein 3-D, Doom, and Quake, unveils his action masterpiece in Daikatana. Using sidekicks, a supernatural time-travelling sword, and role-playing elements, Romero made the game of his dreams. Whether it's the game of your dreams depends on your appreciation of classic action gameplay and your patience with sometimes screwy artificial intelligence.

Utilising id Software's Quake 2 engine (since eclipsed by Quake 3, released last fall),Daikatana's graphics are sharp and serviceable but lack the cutting-edge special effects of recent games. Gameplay follows the standards set by Romero's Doom and Quake designs and rarely deviates from "shoot first, ask questions later."

Daikatana's enormous amount of content offsets its graphical and gameplay shortcomings—there's simply a lot of game to uncover. Players assume the role of Hiro Miyamoto, on a mission to uncover the secrets of a mystical sword called the Daikatana. Over the course of 24 large levels, Hiro travels through four time periods—futuristic Japan, ancient Greece, the Dark Ages, and near-future San Francisco—each featuring completely new weapons, artwork, music, and enemies. Many Daikatana levels feature impressive architecture, particularly in the Greek and Dark Ages episodes. However, most of the splendour goes to waste as there isn't much to do besides knocking off a handful of bad guys. Weapons are explosive and plentiful; the variety of weaponry and enemy creatures keeps the action frantic despite the one-dimensional gameplay.

Daikatana's one innovation is the inclusion of computer-controlled sidekicks, feisty Mikiko and burly Superfly Johnson, who can accept player commands. Players use the keyboard to issue simple commands such as to attack, get, and retreat . The sidekicks add to the story line, but weak artificial intelligence often complicates gameplay. It's tough to be a hero when your lackeys accidentally shoot you or have trouble navigating a door.

Daikatana's epic single-player game should keep players busy for many hours, and a wide assortment of multiplayer modes, including deathmatch, capture the flag, and cooperative play, extend Daikatana's shelf life even further. Though Daikatana can't possibly live up to the hype, its fast-paced carnage should please old-school first-person shooter fans looking for a modern-age Doom. —Doug Radcliffe

Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive
Namco Bandai Taking the PC strategy game into the heart of the Wild West, Desperados serves up a selection of diverse characters, each of whom have unique skills to help you achieve your various goals. So far, so Commandos, right? Well, sort of. While the similarities between this and Eidos' tense strategy title are clear, Desperados has plenty of tricks of its own to keep you playing.

The structure is simple. You're faced with 25 levels, which you must shoot, sneak, talk, play and generally blag your way through. Yet, truth be told, the game isn't the easiest one to take on, with plenty of tricky hoops to jump through before a mission is complete. Suffice it to say, the in-built Quick Save function will be much utilised. But it's a credit to the clear, overhead 3-D viewpoint and fair learning curve that it's still a challenge worth taking up. The mix of Wild West setting (complete with saloons, jailhouses and good old fashioned shoot-outs) and a slowly evolving, involving storyline that gradually introduces more characters to play with certainly helps, and both the visual and audio work enhance the Old West feel. Sure, it can be frustrating, and you're bound to get stuck on your travels, but perseverance pays dividends.

Desperados might lack the graphical majesty of some of its rivals, but don't let that blind you. This is one of the smartest, most challenging strategy games of the year. —Simon Brew
Deus Ex - GOTY
PC Deus Ex is one of the most influential games of all time. A mix of RPG and FPS elements that has often been imitated, but never bettered, no game allows the user a greater freedom to play their own way. Deus Ex Complete sees both games in the ground-breaking collection - Deus Ex and Deus Ex Invisible War - brought together. Experience two of the greatest games ever in one stunning package.
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Eidos While Deus Ex: Invisible War features better graphics, it doesn't take advantage of all of recent technical improvements and the artificial intelligence of the computer-controlled characters is noticeably suspect. The much-vaunted physics engine has a tendency to make everything feel almost weightless as you throw dead bodies around as if they were made of straw. The original Deus Ex is one of the most fondly remembered action role-playing games on the PC. The game was impressively opened-ended allowing you to march in guns blazing, take a more stealthy approach or concentrate on increasing your computer-hacking skills to use the technology around you. Even the storyline was highly adaptable to your playing style, with its X-Files-style plot set in a future dystopia.

It's also a shame that the skill-building system that counted for much of the original's RPG elements has been dumbed down to the point where you simply end up buying upgrades to your weapons and cyborg body. Although Invisible War has many failings, none of them manage to impinge on the game enough to prevent it from entertaining. Games as ambitious and as serious as this are rare and to be encouraged, so anyone looking for something with more depth than the average first person shooter will certainly find it here. —David Jenkins

Levels are heavily populated with items to improve or enhance health (med-kits, armor) and equipment (jetpack, night vision goggles, steroids, boots, scuba gear, and keycards), as well as a wide range of enemies and characters. Assault troopers and captains, pig cops, tanks, drones, recon patrols, the Octabrain, Protozoid Slimers, enforcers, and more lurk in the many levels awaiting Duke's special brand of contact. F-117A Nighthawk Stealth Fighter 2.0
Fahrenheit
Namco Bandai In a nutshell:
The term "interactive movie" is justly associated with misguided attempts at combining games and film. Fahrenheit’s cinematic leanings, however, incorporate the elements that make movies different (characters, tension and plot) with well thought-out game mechanics, and the result is uniquely thrilling.

The lowdown:
Making decisions against a rapidly dwindling timer, your character wakes up having just committed a bizarre ritual murder of which he has no memory. You must switch between playing the fugitive and the cops on his trail, your conflicting jobs are to help the anti-hero escape and conversely to help put him behind bars. But what mysterious force drove him to kill in the first place?

Most exciting moment:
Frequent interludes of rapid button pressing simulate physical exertion as your character escapes a looming threat you can see catching up with you. Your heart will be palpitating. Your nerves will be frayed.

Since you ask:
The introduction and brief tutorial from the game’s "writer/director" David Cage, is actually the head of the title’s French development team, Quantic Dream, animated as a videogame character.

The bottom line:
Utterly superb movie-style thriller with genuine frights and a superbly tense climax.
Nick Gillett

Gabriel Knight 1: Sins Of The Fathers
Sierra Gabriel Knight is a wise-cracking bookstore owner and would-be author. He is the last in a long line of Shadow Hunters, those fated to fight supernatural forces of evil. Tormented by terrifying nightmares, he must spend every waking moment scouring the side streets and back alleys of New Orleans for the key to his dark past. One day, a blood-chilling murder shocks the inhabitants of the city. The police detective assigned to investigate the crime is Gabriel's friend. In the beginning Gabriel collects evidence in hope of using the material for his new novel; but soon he finds himself personally involved in the investigation, and plunges deeper into the world of secret societies and murderous cults.

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers is a third-person puzzle-solving adventure game. Created by Jane Jensen, the game differs from Sierra's Quest games (e.g. Space Quest) by having a realistic setting and focusing (despite its supernatural elements and humor) on mature themes and detective work. In this way it is more similar to the company's earlier Laura Bow games.

The game's icon-based interface is the same as in Sierra's previous titles, with verb commands that allow interaction with the game world and its inhabitants. Though the game still has plenty of inventory-based puzzles characteristic for classic adventure, its gameplay is heavily inclined towards dialogue. Typically, Gabriel will have to interrogate other characters, choosing conversation topics and thus gradually finding clues and advancing towards the mystery's solution.

The game's locations are done in hand-painted style. The CD version of the game adds full voice-overs to the dialogues, as well as narrator's voice to text descriptions.
Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within
Sierra Jane Jensen's spooky private eye is back for another round of supernatural mystery in Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned. This instalment offers greater challenge and interactivity, with a fantastic 3-D engine designed specifically for the game. Each scene offers multiple vantage points and may or may not bring you another step closer to solving the game's ultimate mystery.

Play as Gabriel or his assistant, Grace, as they race against time to locate the young kidnapped son of a dethroned prince in the small French town of Rennes-le-Chateau. The backdrop is used to heighten the tension and add detail to the story, for just over 100 years ago bizarre real-world happenings enriched the parish church and may have led to the local priest's untimely demise.

The game offers a great balance of puzzles and investigative problem solving, often shifting from one to the other between scenes. Only rarely are hints offered, so if you get stuck, you may have to do some real-life investigation to track down other players who have published online help, but you shouldn't have to be an enlightened master to make it through the game. For the most part, persistence pays off, and the lush visuals and outstanding voice talent should help ease the sting of frustration enough to keep you going through the rough spots. Gabriel Knight 3 appeals to the eye, ear, and mind as well as the sense of the macabre—pick it up before the conspiracy hears about it!—Rob Lightner, amazon.com

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin
Eidos If you are looking for the ultimate in stealth gameplay then you should look no further than Hitman 2. Based around 21 missions you play a hitman trying to save a friend who's been kidnapped.

Immersing you slowly into a story that moves between Russia, India, Japan and other locations, you have to use your wits as you sneak through deadly exercises.

Continuing on from the original game, Eidos has done a lot to improve the games control mechanism as well as some of the features that where criticised in the first instalment. Unlike the original, a save option has now been included, though the number of saves you get (and the number of bad guys and the degree of their intelligence) will be determined by the difficulty level you choose.

While the graphics have been noticeably improved since the first game—the snow is very impressive in St Petersberg—neither the sound nor the gameplay have been forgotten: there is now a 60-piece orchestra and 50-member choir soundtrack; and now you don't necessarily have to complete the missions in a specific order.

Eidos has managed to do a rare thing with Hitman 2. It has taken a game that was by all accounts mediocre, listened to the criticism and tried its best to address the problems with an effective response—and produced a high-quality game which, although still difficult, should give you plenty of late nights and annoying puzzles to solve. —Jason Denwood
Hitman: Codename 47
PC The title of this game alone should give you an idea of what to expect. Your bald main character known only as "47", wakes up in a padded cell, a mysterious voice guides you out of the maze and this introduction serves as a training mission for the entire game. The opening mission isn't exactly a complete walkover, but by then you've learned the ropes necessary to actually play—though a wheel mouse is essential for easiest navigation through the menus. There are 12 levels to garrotte, sneak, disguise, shoot and bomb your way through, and these take you through various cities world-wide with a stop-off in the jungle for good measure. The control method is mastered after a while, and though you can redefine your own keys the default number pad block of a PC keyboard is hard to fault. The programmers' attention to detail is captured by the graphics—it's hard not to be impressed the first few times 47 pushes his way past a hanging drape and it flutters for real—and the excellent in-game music adds to the atmosphere. Stop to admire the scenery at the wrong time, however, and you will witness the Chinese action-style fade to white deathscene once too often. The title reveals the inevitable 15 rating—though the blood's not heavy enough to warrant a real BBFC 15, just the ELSPA recommendation.Hitman is not a first-person 3-D shooter, nor a totally stealth-oriented sneaker like the Thief series, and it's as if the control method was made complex enough to distinguish it from both genres. With no in-game save, it's hard work but makes the game longer than 12 levels sound, with a real sense of achievement when you finally succeed. So if you want a heavy challenge, it's the one to go for. —Kenneth Henry

Codemasters Limited Morally ambiguous characters are all the rage in video games nowadays, but they always tend to be violent crime games. This is essentially a cross between the old Dungeon Keeper games and Nintendo’s Pikmin, where you play a Sauron-like dark lord in a fantasy world fill of so many corrupt and unpleasant people you often end up playing the de facto hero. Like Pikmin this is a mix of third person action game and a real-time strategy, the obvious difference being you’re now in charge of a horde of goblins instead of cute little flower creatures.

Although you directly control your bad self in the game you’ve only got some simple axe attacks and magic spells. Instead your main interaction with the world is via your goblin minions. You can either target an enemy and tell them to attack or control the biggest group directly with the right stick. One of the main currencies in the game then is lifeforce, with which you can instantly generate a new minion. This can be obtained from some enemies, and also sheep, but also from innocent villagers if you want to be really nasty. Although the game may lack moral complexities the capacity for strategy is more developed, as you eventually gain the ability to set ambushes and cast spells on minions. The game’s graphics are generally attractive, even with a jarringly short draw distance, but it’s the gameplay that really impresses here with something genuinely out of the ordinary in terms of both strategy and motivation.

Privateer 2: The Darkening
Electronic Arts Privateer 2: The Darkening is an excellent sequel to Origin's classic Wing Commander: Privateer, although Origin made the unfortunate decision to sacrifice gameplay depth in favor of slick full-motion video sequences a la Wing Commander III. Which is not to say the The Darkening is a bad game. Far from it: it is fun, it has the best flight engine thus far in a Wing Commander game (until later releases like Prophecy anyway), it boasts excellent production value including an impressive cast (including Christopher Walken and John Hurt), it has an intriguing 'space opera' plot, and it offers dozens of challenging and lengthy missions.
Project Eden
Project IGI 2: Covert Strike
Codemasters Stealth is once more the name of the game in Project IGI 2. It's set against the backdrop of Russia, Libya and China's underworld and you once again play David Jones chasing military secrets across eastern Europe.

Taking place over three linked campaigns, the individual missions progress in depth and skill to ease you slowly into the game. It has huge levels and plenty of bad guys that you'll have fight; you'll soon have your work cut out.

Graphics have progressed from those on the original, but not really in leaps and bounds and not in line with the rest of the games in this genre. Sounds however, now play a major role in how you play. Make too much noise and the bad guys come running, guns blazing.

What is new and most welcome is a multiplayer element, something that was sorely missed in the first game. The game supports up to 16 players online, but the advantage over the usual range of multiplayer games is the introduction of a cash system. If you want a weapon you'll have to pay for it and the more times you die the less cash you'll have available. This is a great tactical idea and makes you really think about respawning rather than, as usual, jumping back in and getting killed.

On its own, this game offers plenty to the stealth fan. Yet with the games market now well supplied with stealth titles you can't help but think that while the original was ahead of its time, this game is a just a tiny bit late for the party.

Yes, the levels are large and yes, the AI is very impressive—guards can hear you coming a mile off if you are charging around like a bull in a china shop—but it doesn't bring anything new to the genre. Unfortunately, in a genre that has been dominated by games such as Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid, anything new can't just be good, it has to be very impressive. Unfortunately Project IGI 2 is good but not special. –-Jason Denwood

Quest For Glory, Pt.1
Sierra A fantasy game of the dungeons-and-combat variety, Quest for Glory 5: Dragon Fire allows players to customise a hero and send him to Silmaria, a country whose king has been murdered. In order to flush out the perpetrator, you must enter the race for the throne, completing seven Rites of Rulership. First, of course, you must earn the required entry fee, either by slaughtering monsters or competing in arena combat.

Sound all too drearily familiar? A few intriguing features do separate this game from all of its fantasy role-playing siblings. The greatest of these is a sense of continuity with the previous Quest for Glory games. Not only do characters from older stories re-emerge—sometimes newly married or better established in their careers—but you can import your old characters into Dragon Fire. Instead of starting anew, you can continue a long seamless adventure with a familiar hero. Other nice touches include a rarely seen haggling system, whereby you negotiate the prices of food, weapons and spells with their various vendors. The occasional treachery of seemingly trustworthy characters and a great sense of humour also add nice dimensions to the Quest for Glory universe.

Being tied to earlier games, though, gives this one less flexibility. You cannot play a non-human character, you cannot even play a female hero and players are restricted to a few very broad character classes. Character statistics and customisation options are also on the simple end of the spectrum, making the game seem older than it is. On the plus side, Quest for Glory V: Dragon Fire has sharp graphics, some very tough dungeons and a streamlined, easy-to-use interface. Most of all, it tells a good story and allows long-term players of this series to retire their hero in style. —Alyx Dellamonica

Sin
Activision This game is as old-fashioned as they come and will appeal to teenage boys (and most probably their fathers as well). The top-heavy form of Elexis stands in the gamer's way as Colonel John R. Blade attempts to prevent her from waging her war against the security industry.

The gamer's mission is to prevent Elexis injecting the world with a DNA-altering drug that threatens to undermine the laws of morality. With her genetically engineered mutants, Elexis begins to wreak havoc on an unsuspecting world.

As Colonel Blade, the gamer possesses an impressive arsenal of weapons. Remote control detonation devices, sniper rifles and experimental arms are unleashed in a battle against Elexis. With fantastic graphics and the impressive form of Elexis infringing every second, this is one battle with sin that many males will find quite refreshing. —Paul Munford

Eidos
Thief, Pt.2: The Metal Age
Eidos The sequel to the original adventures of Garrett the thief, Thief 2: The Metal Age once again sees our stealthy anti-hero trying to uncover the evil doings of a sinister cabal of technology users and find out more about his purpose.

From the outset you realise that this isn't just another first-person shooter, here all-out violence is more likely to get you killed and it's much better to avoid conflict than seek it. As well as this twist you get a fantastic narrative story, brilliant mission design and some really immersive gameplay.

Your priority is to stay unnoticed as you go about accomplishing your objectives within each scenario. Garrett can stand very still, and becomes effectively invisible if he stands in darkness. He's easier to detect if he draws his weapons or moves around, and even when he can't be seen he can still be heard if he makes a lot of noise. You can gauge just how noisy you are by listening to your footsteps echoing around the corridors, and how visible you are by means of a colour-coded gem.

Like its predecessor, Thief 2 also sounds incredible, plug in your earphones and immerse yourself in the atmospheric ambient sound and first-rate voice acting also brings the game to life. The cynical Garrett is never at a loss for smart remarks, but he knows when to be silent so that he can listen to the guards bantering, religious fanatics whistling hymns, and more. Of further note, Garrett's inhuman enemies, including all manner of undead and man-beast hybrids, sound positively terrifying.

Still, sneaking and climbing around won't be enough to keep Garrett out of trouble; so he is armed with a sword, blackjack, and bow. But the emphasis is on subduing the enemy before they even know he's there rather than all out combat. But Garrett's most versatile tool must be his bow. As with most every play mechanic in the game, archery in Thief strikes the perfect balance of great control and just enough realism.

Thief 2: The Metal Age is one of the most atmospheric games that you can play. It looks great, sounds fantastic and offers a real antidote to hack and slash action.—Uris Headley
Thief, Pt.3: Deadly Shadows
Eidos The third entry in arguably the most under-appreciated series of stealth games on the market, Thief: Deadly Shadows maintains the high standards of its predecessors, and offers some extremely tense gaming in the process. The concept is pretty much the same as usual. You take on the role of a master thief in medieval times, who must pull off a series of missions—covering thefts, the odd assassination and combat—while gradually uncovering a darker, overriding secret. This all underpins a game structure that sees you taking on tasks of gradually increasing difficulty, as you seek to evade guards, sneak through the shadows and pick a few locks for good measure. Along the way, you'll also find yourself making use of your arsenal of tools, be it to create a distraction to get a guard out of the way, or to extinguish some of the lights that would otherwise give away your presence.

All of this takes place in one of the most atmospheric game worlds out there, and, mixed with some terrific work on the audio side, it's utterly engrossing stuff. Few games get anywhere near the tension levels that Thief: Deadly Shadows attains, and few will have you holding your breath quite so often.

And there are more ticks in the plus column, too. The game is a lot longer than gamers would have expected before its release, and some of the missions are genuinely exceptional. The only slight downers are that there aren't too many new ideas this time round, and the third-person camera doesn't always work smoothly, which means you're best sticking to a first-person viewpoint.

Nonetheless, this doesn't detract from the fact that Thief: Deadly Shadows is an excellent game, and one of the very best stealth titles around. It's easy to get into, packed with surprises, and is pretty much guaranteed to bring you out in a cold sweat when it ratchets up those tension levels. It deserves to be a big hit. —Simon Brew
To The Moon
Tom Clancy's... Ghost Recon
Tom Clancy's... Rainbow Six
Avalon Interactive Based on the Tom Clancy novel of the same name, Rainbow Six is an intriguing and absorbing game that proves strategy can work on a console—if you're prepared to be very, very patient.

Originally released on the PC, Rainbow Six charts the progress of a crack, top-secret anti-terrorist squad whose work takes them into a variety of tricky and demanding rescue situations.

Far from being an all-action first-person-shooter, R6 is a game split into two parts. The first requires a major amount of strategic thinking as the player receives detailed intelligence on the mission at hand, selects squad members, then plans out attack strategies on 3D maps, giving the teams instructions on where to go and what to do.

Part two gets more involving, giving the player the option of standing back from the action or rolling up the sleeves of a virtual combat jacket and getting involved at ground level with the execution of the plan set up in the first stage.

This part of the game is great fun and it's fascinating to see how the enemy AI reacts as your mission plan goes down. Viewed in the first-person, the player can order his own squad and a satellite squad around the target, changing plans on the fly or taking the bad guys down by the numbers, with the added attraction of an MP5 over the shoulder.

For a console title, the execution of Rainbow Six is wonderful. It manages to successfully capture the mood of the piece and retain the control of the PC version to great effect. It has to be said that the learning curve is incredibly steep—and this may well put some people off, but perseverance is the name of the game here and those who stick with it will be rewarded time and time again with a playing experience that surpasses anything yet seen on the Dreamcast. — James Gordon

Tomb Raider 3: The Lost Artifact
Eidos Action heroine Lara Croft struts her Tomb Raider stuff in this impressive action adventure game from Eidos. Once again, the world's most famous "grrrl gamer" must jump, swim, climb, and shoot her way through numerous challenges.

There are five locations and 15 massive levels to explore, including the South Pacific, India, London, Antarctica, and Area 51. Unlike previous games in the series, this version lets you visit any of the gaming areas in any order that you prefer. This change enables beginning players to immediately appreciate the diverse gaming environments and designs of different levels that have captivated advanced gamers for the duration of the popular series.

Unlike most action shooting games, Tomb Raider III requires a heavy dose of puzzle solving. In fact, fast reflexes and shooting skills are probably less important than your ability to figure out the best way to unlock the secrets that will advance your entry into new and hidden areas. With clever gameplay and eye-opening 3-D graphics, the third entry in the Tomb Raider series significantly advances the quality of one of the strongest franchises in the history of video games.—Brett Harrison

Electronic Arts When we heard that Ultima 9: Ascension was buggy, we thought, "yeah, yeah, whatever," assuming we'd be spared—and, boy, did we guess wrong. Frustration with the installation ran high, heavily tinting our impression of a game we couldn't wait to play.

In case you're still eager to jump into this highly anticipated game, here's a sobering quote from the readme text: "Be certain you empty your Recycle Bin before installing the game". Or better yet: "We recommend that you not save the game while you're poisoned; this has been somewhat problematic in the current version" .It's a bad sign when the readme announces bugs, but even knowing this, Ascension surpassed our worst fears and severely tried our patience.

With that caveat, if there was ever a game to go to the bother of installing a new graphics card for (as some have for this), it's Ascension. For those unfamiliar with the series, it's a fantastic hybrid: a game with a mature rating (for gore and violence) with a plot based on a stalwart and moralistic quest for virtue. The purpose of battle is the archetypal fight to preserve good, and as the accompanying journal explains: "when selfishness seeks to divide man from woman, parent from child, brother from brother... the power of virtue must be seeded in the minds of the people". In this medieval setting, your battle continues, with spells and skills to protect you.

Designed by the Ultima creator Richard Garriott (known as Lord British), the newest edition boasts impressive artistic direction, including 3-D design and spoken dialogue between characters. For RPG players, Ascension is nirvana, but the price for entry—dealing with the "additions" of the game itself—is steep. —Jennifer Buckendorff

Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger
MacPlay Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger is a space combat simulation game and the second sequel to the original Wing Commander released back in 1990. WC3 was the first in the franchise to use full motion video to tell the story instead of the animated cut-scenes used in the first two games. It is also the first in the series to change from the previous 2D sprite-based graphics to 3D texture-mapped polygonal graphics. The Full Motion Videos were directed by Chris Roberts and featured famous actors such as Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), John Rhys-Davies (Lord of the Rings) and Mark Hamill (Star Wars) in the central role of Colonel Christopher "Maverick" Blair. In between missions, Blair could engage in branching conversations with his fellow wing-mates. These conversations usually affected how that character treats him and/or her as the story proceeds. The game is considered to be one of the first "interactive movie"s and was advertised as such. The FMVs were achieved using green screens with all of the sets being created in post-production. Wing Commander III was the most expensive game to be produced at the time with a budget of $4 million dollars. Previously going by the fan name of "Bluehair" in the first two games, the main character of the series was finally given the name of Christopher Blair. Due to the player being able to choose Blair's callsign, the character's actual callsign of Maverick would not be made "canon" until Wing Commander Prophecy. After every mission briefing, the player has the choice of his wingman for that mission along with his fighter craft and its weapon loadout. As in the first Wing Commander, a majority of your various wingmen could be permanently killed during battle or in certain events during the storyline.

Origin Systems/Electronic Arts Wing Commander: Prophecy is a space combat simulator. Players take the role of Lance Casey on his new assignment aboard the ship. The player can click various hotspots aboard the ship to engage in non-interactive FMV conversations with shipboard personnel. By entering the briefing room, players can receive full instructions on their next mission. Space Combat begins by launching from the TCS Midway carrier, and are displayed as first-person perspective inside the cockpit, similar to the rest of the Wing Commander series. Mission objectives vary between escort duties, patrol missions, search and destroy or defense of the TCS Midway herself. Depending on the ship being flown for the particular mission, the player will be able to switch between guns, missiles, torpedoes and mines with which to combat the enemy. The player, as wing commander, can give orders to nearby wingmen and communicate with any other ship. After each mission, the player must return to dock with the TCS Midway and will receive a mission performance rating.
