Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere
The standard mission design of previous games in the series remains intact, giving players complete control over their aircraft as they zip around in a fully 3-D environment. There are plenty of fun planes to fly this time around, from agile superfighters to lumbering bombers. Their manoeuvrability has been toned down from previous games in the series, which makes lining up targets more of a challenge, but it becomes second nature with a little practice. Don't be intimidated by some of the fancy moves available to thrill-seeking flyers here. After all, what's the worst that can happen when you decide to risk a daring loop and roll? The truth is that Ace Combat 3 is ultimately more about pyrotechnics and fast action than about realistic flight physics. Ace Combat 3 isn't the leap in technology over its predecessor that we expected, but it's still a great way to satisfy your urges to fly the unfriendly skies. —T. Byrl Baker Activision Anthology

Asteroids
The first few levels play just like the original Asteroids game. Your ship starts in the middle of the screen, spins, and blasts asteroids. You can thrust about and pick up some nifty power-ups, but the game doesn't really heat up until later stages. For example, the second stage introduces dangerous black holes that you must avoid. Strangely enough, the final levels play somewhat like another classic game, Missile Command. There are lots of hidden goodies in this game, from new ships to an embedded version of the original wire-frame Asteroids. Fortunately, this version offers more than a simple facelift to the ageing arcade game. Asteroids is simple enough to pick up and play for a few minutes, yet addictive enough to keep you occupied for hours. Retro arcade fans should put this one on their shortlist. —T. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
The game casts you as one of three basic characters: an elf sorceress, a human archer or a dwarf fighter. And from there you're set free inside a huge Dungeons & Dragons world replete with dungeons, forests, ice caves and much more. Naturally, it's all filled to the brim with horrible monsters, wicked traps, treasures and fabled magical weapons. As you go, you're constantly rewarded with new weaponry, new monsters to fight and experience points you can put into your character stats to get even more powerful. You can swap out equipment in an inventory "paper-doll" screen, and those changes are reflected in your onscreen character so you'll start with simple weapons and a drab look, and you'll look like a big, mean superhero by the end of the game. The graphics are simply wonderful and the controls are accurate, responsive and fun to use—necessary for the constant hacking and slashing required. It gets all the more fun when you recruit a buddy and play the game in cooperative mode. —Bob Andrews Ballistic
Batman Begins
Batman: Vengeance
The gameplay is perhaps most similar to a more focused version of Soul Reaver, with plenty of Batgadgets to play with, and even a little bit of Metal Gear-esque sneaking around required. There's also an excellent 3-D combat system and a bunch of driving and puzzle sub-games of varying quality. A few obvious niggles do manage to get under your tights, such as the oversensitive controls, the intrusive loading times and the often frustratingly obscure level designs, but the joy of being Batman and flinging exploding gas balls at everyone manages to overcome. In the video games world Spider-Man still rules the superhero roost, but this is easily the best Batgame yet seen. —David Jenkins Battle Arena Toshinden

An especially fun talent of Flik's is growing plants from the seed tokens he collects. When the plants return, they give him special skills like jumping, flying and invincibility. Sure to be a favourite is the cannon plant, which actually shoots Flik on to new heights. Creativity is essential in this arcade-style game: to be successful, you must think like an ant and use everything you find to help you keep moving. Even though these ants always think with a group mentality, each insect pal of Flik's has special talents they bring to the company. These circus bugs pretending to be great warriors prove to be indispensable in the ultimate battle against the grasshoppers. With outstanding Disney graphics and realistic 3-D visuals, this game has enough action to delight any arcade game lover. —Jill Lightner Bugs Bunny Lost In Time
The Lost in Time theme puts Bugs in control of a time machine, and he'll need to collect carrots to open up levels set in the Stone Age, the 1930s, on a pirate ship and in a creepy mansion. All of Bugs' biggest rivals make cameos in this addictive game. There's Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam, Witch Hazel and everyone's favourite Martian, Marvin. Bugs can grab things, throw objects, roll and give foes a swift kick in the rump. He can even dive into holes and travel underground. Hard-core gamers may hop past this one but arcade-action lovers won't tire of this game quickly. With puzzles, fun boss battles and lots of humour, Lost in Time is worth a look. —Robb Guido Pros:Clever play mechanics and boss battlesGreat graphics and animationsCons:Very challenging Burnout [PS2]
Contrary to the serious approach of Gran Turismo 3, this is foot-to-the-pedal stuff, and tremendously good fun to play. And when you do put your proverbial foot down, get ready to move, for this is a blisteringly fast title that deceptively requires more concentration than it would first appear. The downside is that this won't appeal to those who like their racing games nice and serious, nor to those looking for anything particularly innovative. For Burnout has few qualms about marrying the multimedia power of the PlayStation 2 to a game engine that forsakes bells and whistles for speed, destruction and sheer good fun. Fortunately, in this case, it's all the better for it, making it yet another PS2 four wheel treat. —Simon Brew Bust-A-Bloc

Bust-A-Move 4
The classic gameplay style is still intact, keeping the challenging and addictive elements that make you return, hoping you can burst an ever-larger number of bubbles. Not unlike Tetris in theme and style (you have to group bubbles of the same colour together to get them to burst and give you points) it is different enough to attract a similar gamer looking for a new challenge. Veterans of the Bust-a-Move series will not find vast changes to the original. Quite simply, this is one of the best puzzle games around and with an ELSPA minimum age of three, it is one the whole family can enjoy together. —Robert Hyde Buzz! Brain of the UK

Colin McRae Rally
Colin McRae Rally 3
As you'd expect from a top flight rally sim, everything about the vehicles on offer can be customised and tinkering under the bonnet between stages really produces a difference. If you're a really bad driver you can also see the difference, as tearing the bonnet, side panels or windows out mid stage reveals an astonishing level of detail within the car. Engine parts move, suspension arms judder and Mr McRae himself bounces around the car's cockpit in full 3-D—the level of detail is amazing. With a variety of gameplay modes ranging from races over individual stages to a simulated three-season tour of duty as McRae himself, there's plenty of bang for your buck here—and believe us, by the time you've cannoned off the scenery for the umpteenth time you'll know what bangs are all about. Thankfully, Codemasters have resisted the temptation to fill Colin McRae 3 with discordant music tracks, relegating the score to intro and menu screens and leaving the in-game sound to co-driver commentary and a multitude of engine sounds—a pleasant change in an age where licensed soundtracks are king. Perhaps the strongest element of CM3, though, is in the gameplay. The car handling is spot on and in wild weather (snow, rain, fog and more) guiding a speeding Ford Focus around sharp bends is a real art form. The PlayStation 2 has a wide range of good games and a handful of true AAA titles; Colin McRae 3 falls into the latter category as a real must-have. —Chris Russell Colin McRae Rally 4

Conflict: Desert Storm
The plotline is standard military sim fare—strategic targets must be blown up, prisoners rescued and bullets expended by the thousand—but the extra edge provided by the ability to drive vehicles and to creep around undetected by the excitable Iraqi guards makes this a must-have rather than a nice-to-have. The maximum squad size for any given mission is four team members, each soldier having a special ability ranging from marksmanship to explosives use. In theory, handling four troops simultaneously sounds like a tall order but developer Pivotal has done a great job of creating a control system that works well, even in the heat of battle. Desert Storm is not an easy game by any stretch of the imagination and the learning curve can be quite steep; stick with it, though, and there's much to recommend it. For the cautious player there's an excellent training mode that gives thorough instruction on how to perform all of the basic functions and is guaranteed to turn you into a killing machine. —Chris Russell Cool Boarders

Crazy Golf: World Tour
Crazy Taxi
Taking one of four drivers, each with their own skill set, the player needs to locate and pick up potential passengers, all of whom are identified by the appearance of a coloured dollar symbol above their head. From that point on it's a race against time through crowded streets to get the passenger to their destination while picking up healthy tips for speed on the way. Tips can be increased through the execution of stupidly dangerous stunts and the cunning use of the short cuts and back alleys the game offers. There are three major modes of play, offering the cityscape of the arcade original, a world created especially for the console versions of the game, and the oddly named Crazy Box mode, which sets a number of challenges ranging from high-speed ski-jumps to water balloon popping—an interesting if slightly unusual addition. Graphically, Crazy Taxi is a treat. Big, bold vehicles fairly rocket around the streets of the sprawling city, which has environments ranging from shopping malls to freeways and beaches. Everything shifts along at a fairly steady 60 fps and the only gripe is the pop-up at long distance, which is irritating but doesn't ultimately doesn't affect gameplay. Sound is excellent, with some thumping skate-punk tunes provided by the Offspring and friends and comedy backchat from the cab drivers and their passengers. Prolonged play may take the edge off this hilarity, but only time will tell. What's sadly missing is any kind of multi-player facility. Crazy Taxi is strictly single player. This isn't really an issue (especially after closing time when the living room's packed with prospective Travis Bickles all patiently waiting a turn), but the ability for a two player Vs mode would have been the icing on the cake. This game certainly isn't a Gran Turismo or a Formula 1 2001. There's not even a hint of simulation and the real world never gets a look-in. Instead, this is pure, blissful arcade entertainment. Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars
New multiplayer function via Ad Hoc: Go head-to-head and compete for the highest fare. As a bonus, a turn-based multiplayer feature is also available that allows two players to challenge each other on a single PSP system.Custom Music Player: Transfer your favorite songs to the PSP system to create your own personalized soundtrack.Mega mini-games: There are 32 mini-games where you can perfect your skills, making it ideal for people on the go.Intuitive controls: Crazy Taxi maintains its classic arcade-style gameplay with easy pick-up-and-play controls.Save your best games: Show off your best fare runs to friends. There are three modes of play—game, workout and lesson. Game Mode allows you to choose to play the arcade version (one player), a two-player challenge, or for the truly gifted, there's Double-game play—one player, two dance mats. With an incredible choice of tracks and some inspirational cheering ("You're a super dancer!") from the voice-over guy you'll have danced yourself dizzy in no time. Dancing Stage MegaMix is for everyone—with dancefloor favourites from Kylie and Elvis vs JXL, and younger audience tracks like S Club Junior's "One Step Closer" (as well as The Cure's "Love Cats" for anyone who may claim not to like pop music), no-one will be able resist getting footloose. Those waiting their turn can sing along courtesy of karaoke-style lyrics that appear on the bottom of the screen. Points to note: a dance mat is not strictly necessary (though very much recommended), and you can turn off the background booing during game play via the Options menu. —Mel Pring Dancing Stage Party Edition
The game works by throwing up symbols on screen, which indicate where you need to move your feet (or your fingers if you're determined not to get a mat). Effectively it's as simple as that. Consistently have your feet where they're supposed to be, when they're supposed to be there, and your score will be high. Keep messing it up, and you boogie will have a habit of ending prematurely. The complications are injected when the tempo is upped, and the game demands that you simply move quicker to keep up. But even when the game's sheer novelty factor is exhausted, there's plenty of reason to keep going thanks to the gradually increasing challenge that it presents. And frankly, Dancing Stage Party Mix is as compulsively entertaining as its predecessors. It particularly hits top gear when two players can dance head to head—though this requires two dance mats. Even the fitness-tailored single player workout mode works well. The game's only real limit comes when you've worked your way through all the songs, and even then it's going to take some time to do that. Aside from that, this is polished, very enjoyable fun that virtually all gamers can warm to. —Simon Brew</> Dancing Stage Party Edition

Dead Or Alive 2
Dead or Alive 2 features drop-dead gorgeous visuals, with gracefully animated 3-D characters rendered in great (and in some cases, downright naughty) detail. Not merely scenic backdrops, the lavish 3-D arenas are also highly interactive: fighters get slammed and thrown against walls, and in some cases they can be thrown through windows and off ledges, with the camera viewpoint following the aggressor as he or she jumps down to the lower level of the arena to continue the punishment. A game that plays as good as it looks, Dead or Alive 2 sports a rich combat system that is heavy on the counterattacks. Gameplay moves along at a blazingly fast pace, and the simple controls are easy to pick up on and make executing combo moves a breeze; this is a brawler that both button-mashers and hardcore gamers will enjoy. Unlike other fighting games which contain hidden features that must be unlocked, Dead or Alive 2 pretty much lays all its cards out on the table from the start. There are 12 fighters to choose from (each with at least one alternate costume) and seven modes of play available (including tag battle mode and a two-on-two battle royal that up to four players can join). —Joe Hon Dead Or Alive Paradise

Deus Ex
It's 2052 and you play JC Denton, a nanotechnologically-enhanced, trench coat-wearing employee of anti-terrorist organisation UNATCO. At the beginning of the game, UNATCO is embroiled in a war with one particular faction who is demanding vaccines for a deadly virus sweeping the planet. As the game progresses and more and more information about the true motivations of both terrorists and UNATCO surface, Denton begins to question his allegiances. Essentially Deus Ex is a first-person shooter, but with a hefty helping of role-playing game. As you progress you get experience points which you can distribute across Denton's various skills, from hacking to weapons. How you solve a particular problem decides how many points you get and wading in guns blazing isn't always the best response. There are also a lot of non-player characters in the game from whom you can extract information, thus furthering the story, unlocking sub-missions and generally immersing you in the game's narrative. It's the story that really raises Deus Ex to classic status, though it's also incredibly atmospheric, completely interactive and effortlessly stylish. The PS2 version is a direct port of the PC game; the control system takes a bit of getting used to if you are a seasoned PC FPS player and there are some issues with the graphics, which are blocky in places, but the rich gameplay more than makes up for any small niggling failings. This is a brilliant game on any format. —Kristen Bowditch Devil May Cry 2

Die Hard Trilogy
The game starts off with a whimper rather than a bang, since the first game (Die Hard) is the worst of the bunch. In this action shooter sequence, you re-create John McClane's barefoot hostage rescue mission from the first film. While this game segment is fun in short doses, the run-and-gun gameplay ultimately gets repetitive. The second sequence Die Harder is much stronger. In fact, it is one of the best light-gun games available for the PlayStation. As with other light-gun action games, you must shoot objects as they quickly move across the screen. In this part of the game, you must shoot your way through the Dulles airport. You can play this portion of the game with the basic PlayStation controller, but we highly recommend that you invest in a light gun for maximum fun. Die Hard with a Vengeance concludes this game on a high note. This sequence consists of an incredibly fun (and bloody) driving game that takes place in a realistic city environment with traffic, pedestrians and New York landmarks. As a whole, this collection represents one of the best values available for the PlayStation, provided you can stomach the over-the-top violence and copious bloodshed. —T Byrl Baker Dino Crisis
You play as Regina, a member of a four-person team sent to retrieve an expatriate scientist. Your radio man became a midnight snack for the T rex, so it's up to you and your two remaining team mates to explore a dino-infested research station, rescue the scientist, call for a helicopter retrieval and escape with your lives. Along the way you'll uncover the grizzly remains of those who got in the dinosaurs' way, and you'll unravel the mystery of how a top-secret energy research project turned into a Jurassic nightmare. And about those dinosaurs: they're all over the island. One instant you'll be walking along a second-story balcony admiring the view, the next instant you'll be dodging a T rex as it smashes his huge maw through the concrete walls. Velociraptors chase you down blood-spattered corridors, flying reptiles circle the outdoor areas, and your only weapons are your pistol, whatever else you can salvage, a dwindling supply of ammunition and your wits. Packed with clever puzzles and heart-pounding surprises, all superbly presented with realistic graphics and horror-movie camera angles, Dino Crisis is a triumph of survival-horror gaming. —Mike Fehlauer Pros:Great sound effects and musicWell-integrated, varied and clever puzzlesAwe-inspiring, terrifying dinosaursBranching story line improves replay valueCons:Doors impervious to explosives Dino Dini's Kick Off Revival

The levels, which are quite straightforward, usually involve finding an object and then getting it from A to B and it is therefore fair to say, that this game is squarely aimed at a younger generation. There are three controllable characters, to help you on your journey, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, and each with the ability to increase their skills and strengths by defeating the local dinosaur population en route to achieving the set objectives. This role playing element of Disney's Dinosaur is one of the more interesting aspects of a game that lacks the imagination of the film. Couple this with a fiddly control system, and you end up with a game that is suited more to the younger gamer, than the gamer who thinks they are young at heart. —Michael Bartley Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure

Disney's Tarzan
While running and swinging from vines and branches, Tarzan tries to collect items scattered throughout the game. The "king of the jungle" can sport several special moves to complete his quest, including a unique ground pound that allows Tarzan to break through objects to reveal secret areas. Strength-building bananas can be consumed for extra power, and Tarzan can also throw spears and knives to defeat his enemies. While Tarzan's loincloth is ever so lovely, you can also don a dress in this game ... to play as Jane, of course. This game certainly scores points for variety. In addition to Tarzan and Jane, there's the friendly ape Terk, and a few other familiar characters—all of which have their own special moves. Game settings for easy, medium, and hard accommodate players' varying skill levels. However, while Tarzan is geared for younger children, the special attack and the ground pound moves may be too difficult for them. —Kasty Thomas Pros:Great graphics, including full motion movie clipsBased on the hit movie TarzanCons:Game may be too difficult for some younger childrenSome of the animals killed are cute and furry Disney's The Emperor's New Groove

Driver
Passing the driving test to open up the game is the first "challenge", and it can be a challenge. You have a limited time to complete a number of driving manoeuvres in your ridiculously powerful car. But speed is what Driver is all about and these skills do make it easier—the reverse 180 degrees is a fine way to shake off the law as they pursue you all over the streets of New York, Miami, LA or San Francisco. Once into the game, you do various driving jobs where speed and knowing the streets are a definite bonus. Timing is also crucial—arrive too early or with a tail, and you blow the mission, arrive too late and your target will be gone. Outside the storyline, Driver also contains smaller basic driving games, such as Trailblazer and Pursuit modes, allowing you to flex your car's muscle without jeopardising anything, except the safety of your fellow road users. Control of the car does border on the unrealistic side, but this enables you to throw your car around and adds to the addictiveness of the game—driving the car is great fun in itself. The graphics are shockingly good for the PlayStation and the animated clips add to the 70s ambience. Overall, Driver is truly worthy of the accolades it has received and if you don't own it, you probably aren't getting the best out of your PlayStation. —Chris Hall Driver
Driver 2
With computer-animated cinematic sequences doing the lion's share of the storytelling, players must guide Tanner through more than 40 action-packed missions in four different city settings, this time on foot—which primarily allows Tanner to carjack other vehicles—as well as behind the wheel. While it can be of a lot of fun to play, Driver 2 is no joyride. The missions can be quite unforgiving, requiring many restarts to complete, and the cops are quite determined even at the "Easy" setting. Also, the game's coarse, choppy 3-D graphics often get in the way of things, with slowdowns disrupting the game's pace, and buildings and such popping up out of nowhere. —Joe Hon Duke Nukem: Land of the Babes

Everybody's Golf
Golf has never been a difficult sport to turn into a video game, in terms of getting a little computer person to hit a ball across the screen. The trick has been in making it as accurate and as fun as possible — attracting both serious golfers and those just looking for a bit of pixelated fun. The Everybody’s Golf series has always excelled at this, and this new PSP version is no exception. The game has six new courses and a mountain of customisable features which allow you to create your very own golfer. This is important because one of the game’s key draws is the multi-play mode, which allows other players to join in the same tournament even if only one person actually owns the game. It's the game’s perfectly designed controls which impress the most, with the simple three button power shots allowing anyone to hit the ball, while pros can practise adding top spin, back spin, fades and hooks to subtly alter their stroke. It's almost painfully addictive once you get started and good enough to attract even committed golf haters to the fold. — Harrison Dent Evil Dead Regeneration

EyeToy: Chat
The EyeToy: Chat software actually allows four different methods of communication, namely text, voice, video mail and one-to-one-video chat. The text method is basically an ordinary chat room in which up to 256 people can talk together, whereas the voice chat rooms allow up to sixteen people to conference call together. The really clever bit though is the video chat system where you can talk to someone face to face, in real-time. This only works with one person at a time, but you can instantly switch between different people, allowing you to carry on an extended natter with all your friends. If you can't think of anything interesting to say you can also play one of three online games in video mode, namely chess, draughts and "Naval War" (i.e. Battleships). Finally there's the video mail option which lets you send a 30 second long video message to anyone on your "buddies" list. And if you're worried that all this seems a bit open to abuse Sony have worked together with several children's charities to make sure EyeToy: Chat is as safe to use as possible. So, there you have it: free video phone calls to anyone in the world – who said EyeToy was just a gimmick? —David Jenkins EyeToy: Groove
EyeToy: Groove is simplicity itself. Players stand in front of the EyeToy and TV, and move in time with the on-screen indications. Keep up with the beat and success is guaranteed; dance sloppily and it's Game Over. There's a total of 26 tracks to dance along with—including hits from Junior Senior, Madonna, Fatboy Slim and Elvis. Suffice it to say that Groove was given that name for a very good reason. It's also possible to boogie on down with friends. At certain points, players must dance in sync on-screen together, while at other times players must alternately jump in and out of the spotlight. With a few friends and the necessary equipment, Groove is a sure-fire hit. It can be pretty embarrassing, especially during some of the cheesier tracks (such as "Hooray Hooray It's A Cheeky Holiday"), but there's no denying the fun and all-round grooviness to be found on this disc. —Jonti Davies EyeToy: Kinetic Combat

F1 2000
The Weekend game does require a bit of skill. You can tweak the performance of your car accordingly to get the best results on a particular circuit (of which there are 17 from around the world, including Indianapolis and Silverstone). Speed your way through practice runs, qualifying rounds and then the race itself. Options also exist for changing weather conditions and car damage. For really grab-hardened racing veterans requiring a bit more kick under the hood, F1 2000 doesn't quite deliver the goods. The graphics look dated, lacking the silky realism that has become the norm. You get the sense it may be treading water until PlayStation 2 makes its debut. —Mark Wright F1 Championship Season 2000 [CIB]
For statistical die-hards the game is up to date until Spring 2001, which some may perceive as an advantage over Formula One Grand Prix 3. If your machine is powerful enough, all the visual trimmings to make the race the way it's watched at home can be re-enabled. The radio link purports to be the same as heard by real-life drivers. In real life it's doubtful that common sense is spelled out to the driver like, for example, the necessity of staying on the track. It's another feature that would be tried and forgotten other than for the lap time updates—if you don't have the seconds necessary to read the onscreen displays. Then there is the pace lap, EA's homage to televised Formula One racing coverage. Sadly it's a waste of time when you want to get your hands dirty competing. It's not all bad, however, and the best new feature is the driving school where your general skills are tested, including achieving a certain manoeuvre or distance in a given number of seconds, and graded by shades of medal. As a training mode it's quite effective. That training is affected when set to ultra-realistic and the cars slide across the track as if still in arcade mode. The physics have improved, but in the benchmark GP3 the car's visual reaction fits the handling. If you have the original EA F1 2000, it's best waiting for the inevitable 2001 edition for this problem to be addressed rather than settling for this interim update. —Kenneth Henry Fade To Black

Family Guy
TV’s (or at least DVD’s) most outrageous cartoon family get their own video game that not only looks just like the show but is just as funny and offensive. The lowdown: Being cancelled may have been the best thing that’s ever happened to Family Guy, because ever since it was brought back it’s been more popular than ever – why it’s even got its own video game now. As with most licensed games it’s not exactly breaking down any gameplay paradigms, but at least it’s got some quality gags to fall back on. You can control one of three characters: Brain the dog (whose levels are all stealth based), Peter the dad (whose missions are basically scrolling beat ‘em-ups) and baby Stewie. There’s also a lot of very short mini-games, but none of it really adds up to being more than an interactive background for the game’s jokes. For most Family Guy fans that’s going to be fine though. Most exciting moment: As you might expect the best bits of the game involve Stewie, the family’s psychotic baby. They’re basically platform levels with Stewie jumping, gliding and shooting his way to world domination. He’s also got a mind control ray for taking over adults and there’s some fun on-the-rails shooting sections and into-the-screen chases. Since you ask: The game’s script is written by series creator Seth McFarlane, who also provides voiceovers along with series regulars Mila Kunis, Alex Borstein, Seth Green, Patrick Warburton and Adam West. There’s even a bunch of regular guest stars including Wallace Shawn, Charles Durning, and Adam Corolla. FIFA 2002: FIFA Football 2002
The infamous new passing method, making its debut in the 2002 edition, suffers from the lack of flow in the game. It's that too that makes sliding tackles very tricky to judge, and, ultimately, makes FIFA Football 2002 a chore to play. It's a shame, as the front end is the usual sleek affair, and the intro cut scenes are a great deal more professional. You can't help feeling that there is a playable game buried in there somewhere, and there are certainly plenty of league and cup options to keep you busy. Yet when games such as ISS Pro Evolution 2 manage to squeeze so much out of the original PlayStation technology, it's hard to find a compelling reason to fork out for this tepid, lazy update that's a step backwards for the FIFA series. —Simon Brew FIFA 2002: FIFA Football 2002
The idea is that no longer can you just ping the ball from end to end with a simple press of a button or sprint down the wing and score from the perfect cross each time. Judicious use of the Dual Shock controller ensures that crosses, passes and shots are defined by the amount of force applied and the left analogue stick determines the direction of the ball. Although this adds a welcome depth, FIFA veterans may find the new control system over-elaborate and fiddly. Unfortunately, the addition of in-depth gameplay comes at the expense of graphical quality—FIFA Football 2002 is a big step down from last year's version. Even high-profile players like Beckham are virtually unrecognisable and although there are some neat new animations the overall effect is of an enhanced PSone game rather than a genuine next-generation product. But the players are real, all the leagues are present and correct (including the Austrian and Korean leagues for the soccer completists), and the multi-player mode is perfect for after-the-pub footy action. As usual the game will sell in bucketloads but is unlikely to replace ISS (now in the guise of Pro Evolution Soccer) as the cognoscenti's game of choice. —Michael Bartley FIFA 2003: FIFA Football 2003

EA have done their homework. The 10th year of FIFA doesn't just see the player names updated and few tweaks here and there—it's more of a mini revolution. There are two new modes of play, simulation and arcade play—one for the more tactical player who likes the fancy approach to play and the other for those more frenetic matches. As usual, vast numbers of teams and players are included (still no Oxford Utd, though—Oxford Ed); all the big name players are instantly recognisable, Edgar Davids being one fantastic example. The tons of extra features include a new European tournament and loads of DVD clips. —Laurent S Hall FIFA 2004 - UEFA Euro 2004 Portugal
FIFA 2004: FIFA Football 2004
The big innovation this time round is the off-the-ball feature, and this really is a stroke of genius. It's fiddly to get to grips with, but basically when attacking, you can control a separate player as they run into space, ready to take receipt of a killer pass that splits the opposition defence open. It takes a little working at, but when it comes off, you'll be smug beyond belief. The feature itself genuinely adds tactical edge to a game that used to be wrongly dismissed as an arcade-style kickabout. On top of that, there are the things that FIFA does better than anyone. The presentation, audio and visuals are superb from top to bottom, and the improvements to the club management side boost the game's longevity—as does a promised link up with Total Club Manager 2004, where you'll be able to import teams from that into FIFA 2004. Most importantly of all, at the heart of all these improvements is a highly playable football game that's very easy to get into yet suitably challenging to master. And in multi-player mode, it's even better. —Simon Brew FIFA 2005: FIFA Football 2005
The rest of the game attracts the usual annual pros and cons. Its presentation is second-to-none, and for a more attacking-focused game, you need look no further. What's more, the single player mode is substantial, and very long lasting. The downside is the Pro Evolution Soccer franchise which is, and remains, the choice of the hardcore gamer. Yet that doesn't mean there's not fun to be had with FIFA 2005. Quite the contrary, in fact. Every year, FIFA can be relied on to provide an entertaining, engrossing and long-lasting football game. Thus, whilst it might be in second place, and this latest release doesn't change that, it remains a strong and worthwhile runner-up.—Simon Brew FIFA 2006 - World Cup Germany 2006
The official game of the 2006 World Cup has all the stadiums, players and kits of the real thing, but the biggest surprise is that it actually improves upon the usual FIFA gameplay too. So if England does not win in real life, you can at least make sure they do in the virtual world. The lowdown: . In previous years, FIFA Word Cup games have meant little more than a cut down version of the existing FIFA game, however this version features not just the 32 teams from the finals but the chance to play as any of the other 95 countries from the qualifying rounds. There’s even the option to replay historic World Cups – although only a handful of older players are included. In terms of gameplay things have been noticeably speeded up and there’s even an alternative control system that exactly mimics rival Pro Evolution Soccer. PES fans will still be suspicious but this really is the best FIFA yet. Most exciting moment: Reliving the glory of 1966 with the current England team and then going on to do the same thing in this year’s Cup as well! Since you ask: Many of the England team, including Wayne Rooney, claim to be video games fans and many have mentioned playing the FIFA games between real matches. The bottom line: A genuine improvement on FIFA 06 with the usual top notch EA presentation. Harrison Dent FIFA 2006: 2006 FIFA World Cup

It’s the game football fans wait all year for and to usher in the next generation EA Sports have given FIFA its biggest revamp in years, changing not just the way it looks but the way it plays in what aims to be the ultimate marriage of realism and fun. Final Fantasy I
Final Fantasy begins when four young warriors, each possessing a Crystal, are summoned to bring the world back to a harmonious elemental balance. Thousands of lives succumb to their attacks, leaving many children orphaned. Final Fantasy VII
The story of Final Fantasy VII centres around a solider named Cloud Strife, who joins forces with Avalanche, a group of resistance fighters, to take down an evil mega-corporation known as Shinra. (The fate of the world hangs in the balance, of course.) Truly epic in scope, this three-disc game requires a considerable amount of time to complete—-this reviewer gladly gave up over 80 hours of his life to finish it. But it's definitely a rewarding adventure that every gamer should consider undertaking, especially since it's now one of the low-priced "Greatest Hits" titles. —Joe Hon, Amazon.com Pros:Intricate and absorbing storyline with endearing charactersImmense and highly imaginative game worldSpecial battle systemBeautifully animated movie sequences Cons: Your friends and family may feel neglected Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core
Final Fantasy VIII
The game mechanics are standard fare for an RPG: acquisition of items and spells, turn-based combat, experience points earned in combat allowing advances in levels. From exploration to battles to dialogue, Final Fantasy VIII has it all. However, Final Fantasy VIII falls to that great weakness of RPGs: random battles. While necessary for advancing in levels, the battles occur with such frequency that they can grow annoying, making for a tedious game experience. The epic storyline spans four discs—over 40 hours of gameplay—and is based around a mercenary cadet who finds himself caught up with an underground rebel faction. He winds up in a plot to assassinate the sorceress who has just seized power from the president. You could complain of limited replay value, but this gripe is of no consequence: the game is such a satisfying experience, it doesn't require replay. Final Fantasy VIII is easily worth both the hype and the wait. You can't buy a much better game. —John Cocking Pros:A story to beat all storiesCharacters worth caring aboutHey—it's from SquareSoftStunning animationsCons:Too many random battlesCombat is, as always, turn-based and offers minimal excitementWeak souls might give up after two or three discs of play Fireblade

Flipnic
Despite all the graphical finery Flipnic is at heart still a pinball game. There are four main themed worlds with two "tables" apiece, and on each table there are around half a dozen separate areas. You can switch between any of these areas by simply flicking your ball through a tunnel and, as long as you know the way back, you can return at any time. There are mountains of secrets to unlock that have you trying to feed monkeys, catch butterflies, shoot UFOs and much more besides. Succeed and you can usually unlock more areas—or at least rack up a huge score. As long as you accept the principle that it is still essentially "just" a pinball game, Flipnic is pretty much perfect at what it does: it's fast, funny, attractive and tons of fun. —David Jenkins Flower

Gangs Of London
The Getaway series expands onto mobiles with an all-new spin-off that marries strategic grabs for territory with all out gang violence on the streets of the capital. With a suite of multiplayer modes and a 60 level single player this will keep you playing longer than the PS2 originals. The lowdown: Although it’s set in the same universe as The Getaway this is no simple port or sequel, but a whole new game that moves away from the series’ Grand Theft Auto inspired roots. Although the game does feature vehicle driving it’s more focused on combat as you take down enemies with a range of guns and other weapons – even using passers-bys as human shields. There’s also a strong tactical element to the game as you ferry fellow gang members across town to act as back-up in the most hotly contested areas of the city. And if you ever get sick of that there’s even a bunch of two player pub mini-games to relax with, including darts and skittles. Most exciting moment: The free roaming mode works a lot more like the original The Getaway games, since it lets you explore the virtual London however you want – with or without police and other gangs’ interference. Just like the originals the streets and buildings are modelled exactly like the real thing. Since you ask: Although the game is being developed by Sony’s London studio, the same team is also working on a PlayStation 3 sequel, which appears to be at least partially set in Amsterdam. The bottom line: Old London town has never been more dangerous in this new strategy shooter. HARRISON DENT Garfield 2
Getaway, The
Getaway, The: Black Monday
Although a passable Grand Theft Auto clone, the original The Getaway was criticised for its stodgy driving model, uneven fight sequences and unappealing characters. This sequel addresses each problem in turn and if it doesn't entirely silence its critics the early preview versions so far shown are still more entertaining than the original game ever was. You'll take the role of three new characters—policeman Mitchell, ex-boxer Eddie O'Conner and petty thief Sam, each with their own skills, abilities, attitude and motivations. The script itself is far less obnoxious than before but more importantly the control system has been completely revamped so that it's far more responsive and fluid. The actual graphics have changed very little, but the already highly detailed representation of London has been markedly improved to include the Underground, many more building interiors and even the Thames.—David Jenkins Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams PC [German Version]

Gran Turismo
You can choose between the arcade version (featuring classic cars such as Corvettes and Aston Martins) or the simulation, which is the true heart of the game. The simulation starts you on an entire racing career beginning with a cheap used car and second-rate tracks. You will find yourself longing for the Dodge Viper as your sad starting fund puts you behind the wheel of a used Honda Prelude or Mazda RX-7. As you win races, acquire money and earn advanced licenses, you are able to buy better cars and race in more competitive matches right up to the GT World Cup. Complete with cunning renditions of actual car models and a very playable interface, this game is great for the serious racing simulation fan and the casual gamer. It promises instant action and the kind of gradual advancement that keeps gamers playing for weeks. While the license tests can be hard, the fun track design and sheer number (140-plus) and variety of cars to choose from makes this an exciting race experience. —Allen Stewart Gran Turismo 2
The range of cars is offensively large—everything from the Toyota Yaris to the Dodge Viper is covered. The attention to detail is fantastic, the cars sound and perform like the real thing and the upgrades available cover everything from alloy wheels to a racing weight flywheel for your engine. There are a number of different driving licences to pass and you have to have a particular class of licence to race in the different leagues, which get progressively harder, but reap richer rewards. To really succeed in Gran Turismo 2 you have think like a racer—slip-streaming and power sliding around corners to get the edge on your opponents are just some examples. The two versions of the game provide a great balance between a serious sim and quick multi-player arcade action, making it a worthwhile investment. While the gameplay sits on the realistic side, so it takes a little time to get totally proficient behind the wheel. Having said that, once you master control of your machine, you really do have the power. If driving is your thing Gran Turismo 2 is a must. —Chris Hall Gran Turismo 3: A -Spec
Gran Turismo 4
First up, Gran Turismo 4 is bigger and better than previous games in the record-breaking series. Much bigger, in fact: there are some 500 cars to drive, and around 100 courses on which to take those motors for a spin. Every single car is a perfectly modelled replica of its real-life equivalent, containing much more detail than the car models found in Gran Turismo 3. And it shows: thanks to this increased level of detail, GT4 edges the series ever closer to photorealism. By far the biggest of Gran Turismo 4's many attractions is its online play. Over the Internet or using a local area network of PS2 consoles, it will be possible for six people to meet and race, each with their own cars. The prospect of an online Gran Turismo community is certainly something to look forward to. As Gran Turismo continues to evolve, Polyphony Digital ups the ante by making each new instalment more comprehensive than the last. Gran Turismo 4 follows that admirable trend: its driver AI is more lifelike, its physics engine is more complex, its engine noises sound closer to the turbines mimicked... and there's more of everything. To top it all, GT4 boasts improved handling over GT3. All this work should achieve the desired result: Gran Turismo fans will be kept happy and new converts will be made. —Jonti Davies Gran Turismo 5

The Grinch takes all the best aspects of other platform games such as Rayman 2 and Gex—Deep Cover Gecko, and creates something superior to both. With a young target audience in mind, The Grinch is graphically very sharp, with its bright colours promoting the game's adolescent feel. The background music enhances the game's playability with sounds and narrative helping the player understand what The Grinch can do. All the levels are mission-based, where a number of quotas have to be completed in order to advance. While completing these quotas, missing pieces of blueprints can be collected and once all are within your possession, the invention it creates can be made, which can aid you in fulfilling the tasks that have been set. The game is played around four different levels, all filled with hidden items and secret sub-levels. The game takes a third-person perspective, which suits the game well. However, there are some occasions where the camera cannot be moved to show the best view for the task at hand. Gungrave
Gungrave has been inaccurately compared to Devil May Cry. The games share some style points but otherwise have nothing in common. Grave's controls only permit him the most cursory of acrobatics. He can dive a la Max Payne but his normal gait is the shuffle of a zombie. In an original twist on controller schemes, he can move at regular walking speed via the L3 button (pressing down on the analog stick). Unfortunately this kink quickly loses its novelty as it is difficult to hold and feels as if it's damaging the controller. Unfortunately, the instant gratification this game brings is short lived. Like all fictional global corporations Mantel is up to no good and it turns out their drug NECTAR is doing more than just making you a super soldier with increased speed, strength and accuracy. Highlighting enemies under cover from you, as well as grenades and bobby traps is all very good but the downside is it also turns you (and your teammates) psychotic if you use it too much. Worse it seems to sanitise the world around you, making corpses invisible and even obscuring the true nature of the landscape around you… Rebel soldiers are able to take advantage of the reality bending powers of NECTAR, such as playing dead to regain their health or using a special "weapons steal" move to make up for their lack of hardware (both of which moves work great in multiplayer). With arguably the most interesting storyline in any current first person shooter and a custom made graphics engine Haze's future looks crystal clear. Harrison Dent Heavy Rain

Indiana Jones & the Emperor's Tomb
Such a quest should be easy for an adventurer such as Dr Jones, and with game controls as well laid out as these, it is. Indy can run, jump, shimmy up ropes, swing with his whip, and fight it out with nasty villains. True to the movies, he also has to navigate an almost constant stream of death-traps—caves full of traps, ruins full of traps, medieval castles filled with traps. And guess what you find in China? Yes, more traps. It gets repetitive, but the game has some very clever tricks. For example, skulls make noise, so Indy can toss a few and watch the crocodiles or sentry traps target them instead. In addition to traps, Indy must combat Chinese Triads, poachers, animated statuary and Nazis. He can execute quick punch combinations to knock his foes out or pick up weapons such as a chair, a plank, a machete or firearms. His famous whip can be used to disarm foes. The only problem is the camera, which is difficult to keep in the right position. You have complete control of it, but it's hard to manage a camera while you're fighting a martial arts expert. The graphics are good, pleasantly reminiscent of some of the movies' more memorable locales. The in-game Indy mug looks like Harrison Ford right down to the chin scar. Other nice touches include Indy actually having to pick up his hat if it falls off during a fight and the little 1930s plane flying over the aged and weathered world map. The music is pure John Williams and the voice work is handled by very convincing imitators. The guy they got for Indy, in particular, sounds a lot like Ford himself. Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb does right by its licence and provides hours of entertainment for anyone who's ever wanted to relive the movies starring the most exciting adventurer alive. —Bob Andrews Intellivision Lives

The various stages of Driver-inspired racing action loosely follow the plot of the film as Croker brings together his dream team of dodgy geezers and sets the stage for the most audacious crime of the century. Swinging London Town is the setting for The Italian Job's first chapter, and here you'll get used to driving some of the game's different vehicles. These include swish 60s sports cars, limos, vans and, of course, those famous Minis. Most missions involve getting to a certain location before the time runs out, with the added complication of having to ditch any coppers that have given chase. As the story progresses you'll visit Turin and ultimately the Alps as Croker's gang attempt to make their getaway via a bullion-stuffed coach. The Italian Job captures the spirit of the film well, with a voiceover from none other than celebrity Michael Caine-impersonator Phil Cornwell. The graphics, while lacking the polish and sophistication of Driver, are authentic enough, and the jolly soundtrack complements the action rather nicely. However, while dedicated fans of the film will love the obvious care and attention that has gone into this adaptation, other gamers may be a little disappointed by the shallow gameplay and lack of levels. While the sub-games that involve racing to checkpoints or running over traffic cones provide some extra value for money, ultimately there's little here that hasn't already been featured in other PSone driving games. —Tim Cant Jak & Daxter Trilogy

The game world is seamless and you can move between areas and missions pretty much at will; there are no loading times whatsoever—a lesson which the latest Crash Bandicoot would have done well to learn. What's more, the irritation of having to restart levels and collect everything again if you lose all your energy is mercifully absent here. The graphics are truly scrumptious and the sound lush—and, shock horror, the script's decent and the characterisation and voice acting not half bad. It's not quite as amusing and cleverly thought out as Rare's aforementioned N64 stalwart—or their more recent Conker's Bad Fur Day—but it's pretty close. The downsides? It's maybe a bit too easy for seasoned gamers—though by no means a cinch—and the magnificent graphics have eaten up memory that might have been used to make the game longer; as trade-offs go, though, that's pretty reasonable. They make a game based on an amalgamation of all the Bond movies, with their own "original" story line, then go and stick Pierce Brosnan's face and a bunch of clips from Die Another Day in it. Whaaaat? Bizarre marketing decisions aside, this could finally be the game to come out from behind the shadow of the seminal N64 classic GoldenEye. Which means, of course, that this is a stealthy first-person shooter (with a few car-racing levels thrown in for good measure) bolted onto a cracking multi-player mode. Following on from GoldenEye is a bit like being asked to make Citizen Kane 2, but EA have sensibly gone back to the spirit of the original and NightFire is much more strategic than their last attempt, the rather shallow Agent Under Fire. Once again you can learn a pathological hatred of security cameras as you use an even wider array of Q gadgetry to kill people without them even noticing. The multi-player mode is also good, with meatier weapons than last time, including a particularly fun remote-control missile launcher. People are always crooning about nobody doing it better than Bond, but in the gaming world that's not always been true; with this game, though, it looks like he's taken the ejector seat straight to the top of the first-person shooter pile. —David Jenkins James Bond: 007 Racing
The opening scene is enough to warm up any Bond fanatic, with a montage of some of Bond's finest moments in his fantastic automobiles. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to follow through into the game. The graphics look like very early Playstation rendering, and offer very little by modern standards. The inter-level cinematics are a little more exciting, but only serve to dress down the gameplay. Control of the car is very simple, but it does seem fairly unresponsive compared to other driving games such as Driver. You can cycle through the weapons you collect to fight the foes you meet on your mission. The missiles will lock onto targets and the weapons are satisfyingly powerful. At the same time, you have to play hard to succeed; make no mistake, 007 Racing is no walk in the park. The two-player mode pitches you against your friends in car-based stand-offs. Being split-screen makes the graphic very poor and they do not offer anything new. Overall, the game does not really do justice to the Bond sensation. If you are looking for a driving challenge, Driver would be a much safer bet. —Chris Hall James Bond: The World Is Not Enough
As you might expect you play the part of 007, and the action is viewed from a first-person perspective. As each levels begins you are given a set of objectives by M and these have to be completed before you can proceed. These tasks mainly involve shooting as many bad guys as possible with a variety of satisfyingly chunky weaponry, but there are also skiing, driving, gambling (one of the most fun) and stealth levels. With the latter utilising some neat gadgetry provided by John Cleese's R (the only actor from the film actually voicing his character in the game). The game follows the plot of the film very closely, with 10 levels being linked by extensive movie footage. An experienced gamer will not have too many problems finishing TWINE in a few hours, and the extensive violence makes this game unsuitable for younger players, but most James Bond fans will find much to entertain them in this diverting romp. —Michael Bartley James Bond: Tomorrow Never Dies

Judge Dredd: Dredd vs Death
The Death in question is, of course, Dredd's dimension-hopping evil nemesis who, along with his fellow dark judges, has popped over to Mega-City One to, well, kill everyone. There's also been a nasty outbreak of vampirism, which means that Dredd has been working overtime. Although it's an FPS, there's more storyline here than normal and Dredd has the option to arrest perps instead of just shooting them dead with his lawgiver—indeed, if he doesn't get the balance right between lenience and severity he'll be in trouble with his superiors. The world of Dredd vs Death looks exactly like the comics books and all of Dredd's equipment, from the lawmaster motorbike to the multiple-warhead lawgiver, are in full effect; there is however less of the trademark dark humour than many fans would wish. It's a good buy for fans of ol' stony face, but by no means one of the best first-person shooters available. —David Jenkins Juiced Eliminator
Kensei: Sacred Fist
Kessen II
As a gaming experience Kessen II can be rewarding and at the same time oddly frustrating, given the relatively poor quality of graphics during planning phases and the ponderous and overly intrusive cutscenes. The fighting sequences are all very impressive, though, with up to 500 troops on screen at any one time and the inclusion of magic users who can throw hellfire, damnation and some very impressive large boulders around with relative abandon. For a game of such complexity the learning curve is nicely balanced and never feels as if it's going to get too difficult too quickly, but what may really hold the game back is its core subject—a tactics game set in feudal Japan will appeal to a very limited market. That said, if you fancy a break from Metal Gear's military tip-toeing and Grand Theft Auto's blatant "shoot first and never mind the questions" attitude there's a lot to be said for Kessen II.—Chris Russell Kileak The Blood

Lemmings
Lemmings
The lemmings are back and once again you’re called in to save them from themselves and help them to safety. Using a range of gadgets and tools you’ve got to stop them plummeting over cliffs and into bear traps in one of gaming’s most beloved puzzle games. The lowdown: One of the few puzzle games to owe absolutely nothing to Tetris, Lemmings finds you trying to save the lives of dozens of green haired mammals whose disregard for their own safety has them walking mindlessly from left to right across the screen. Each of the hundreds of different levels gives you a limited range of tools to help them, from bridges to floating umbrellas. Without a mouse the controls are more awkward than they used to be but there’s a useful zoom option and the ability to pause the game at any time. There’s also an online multiplayer mode and the chance to design your own levels. Most exciting moment: Blowing up your lemmings when you fail a level and watching the fireworks. Since you ask: Lemmings debuted on the Amiga in 1993 and has since gone on to appear on twenty different formats, although now that Sony owns the license future will games will only be on PlayStation consoles. The bottom line: A very welcome blast from the animal endangering puzzle past. HARRISON DENT LittleBigPlanet

Lotus Challenge
Officially licensed by the British racing and sports car specialists, this game covers many years of Lotus' history, allowing the player to take the wheel of cars ranging from the 40s and 50s right up to the late 90s. Control is good, if a little spongy at times; it's difficult to say if this is true to the real cars, but for a video game it feels a little woolly after the crisp, responsive handling of Gran Turismo 3. Other than that Lotus Challenge is a competent little racer with a lot going for it. Graphics are up to the PS2's increasingly high standards and while some of the circuits lack a little in the imagination stakes, this is a title that sports-car fans are going to want to dabble with. —Chris Russell Lumines
The idea is that squares, made up of four multi-coloured smaller blocks continually fall from the top of the screen. You have to create single colour rectangles out of these squares, at which point they disappear when a vertical line, called the "timeline", passes over them. Your game ends if any block hits the top of the screen. Like all puzzle games describing the gameplay is infinitely less interesting than actually getting hands on. Also like most other puzzle games, Lumines doesn't look very good in screenshots — seeing it in motion is a different matter all together as the backgrounds swirl and pulse with your actions. The music is even more in tune with your actions, rising and falling depending on how well you're doing. With a number of different game modes, including a wireless multiplayer option, what looks to be the new console's least arresting title is actually its most playable and likely to remain a favourite long after other launch titles have been discarded. — Harrison Dent Lumines Electronic Symphony

Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX
Powered by the celebrated Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game engine, this simulation of sense-defying stunts is both graphically and playability-wise very similar to Mr Hawk's game-that's exceptionally good in case you didn't know. Ramps, rails, rooftops; if you can think of an impractical surface to ride a bike on, Pro BMX will provide it—and the action is compulsive enough to keep you playing despite the fact you were meant to leave the house three days ago. While there are enough courses here to keep even the most demanding bike freak content, dedicated Hoffman wannabes can create their own track with the game's funky level editor, should you grow bored with what's on offer. This is pretty much the complete package—the only real criticism is the aforementioned similarity to Pro Skater. Both great games but both a tad too similar, perhaps. —Steve Colton Medal Of Honor
As US secret service officer James Patterson, you must embark on highly dangerous missions, sometimes in the trenches, sometimes undercover, but always alone and always eliminating the German Nazi threat. The Nazis are equipped with the same weapons as you, and they know how to use them. Throw a grenade and watch soldiers scatter, or better yet kick a steel pineapple back in their direction before it blows. Missions are divided into challenging—but never frustrating—levels that include infiltrating a U-boat pen, destroying a war train while disguised as a German officer, or powering through a group of nasty Gestapo in a quaint French town. A mixture of stealth fighting and action bravado, using each with prudence is essential for successfully completing levels. This game is full of suspense, in the way that a good page-turner keeps you up at night. You'll be playing until the end of the level, but when that comes, the briefing for the next level is just too enticing to stop. —Jeff Young Pros:The best first-person shooter for the PlayStationAn engaging plot, even for non-history buffsOutstanding music and sound designCons:Graphics get blurry when close upReplayability is low except in multiplayer modeOccasional polygon dropout can enable player to see through some walls Medal of Honor - Limited Edition
Medal of Honor: Rising Sun
In truth, the formula hasn't moved on much for the franchise, but then it does work spectacularly well. The game's various missions are varied, and they demand elements of stealth, action and a bit of sabotage along the way. And they're not afraid to pull the proverbial rug from underneath to keep you on your toes. As ever, the multimedia elements border on spectacular. The musical scores of Medal of Honor games are rarely given the credit they deserve, but their contribution really can't be understated. The cinematic visuals, however, do tend to hog the headlines, and it's easy to see why. As you fight to complete a mission with explosions going off all around you there's little time to notice them. A couple of mild criticisms, then. There isn't much scope to deviate from the set path through the game, which is very tightly scripted. Not a bad thing, but not something that will appeal to everyone. Plus it would be nice to see a few more risks taken with the Medal of Honor formula. These mild grumbles aside, Medal of Honor: Rising Sun is simply a very good video game. It's tense, gripping and desperately addictive. And when you ultimately see the end game sequence, you really will be thirsting for more. —Simon Brew Medal of Honor: Underground
Medal of Honor: Underground is not simply a collection of further levels—there has been some thought and careful re-working to bring new features to the game. The environment is now more interactive, so more things react to being shot at, and you also get to go on co-operative missions with other allies. The overall level of AI has been improved so the enemy is now more responsive and will react to your fire accordingly. There is a new range of weapons for Manon to use, but overall they have the same effect as the original. The sound is also highly impressive; the footsteps of approaching guards seem to echo off every wall and the multilingual shouts add to a very encompassing gaming environment. The first-person view and controls are the same as the predecessor, which are simple and easy to get the hang of while using the analogue stick to control the speed of your movement is noteworthy and extremely effective task to master. Perhaps the only shortcoming of the game lies in the visual presentation: the gameplay graphics are impressive and clear, but cannot match that of the more powerful consoles. There are still a few problems with the polygon mapping, but nothing that detracts from the playability of the game. Overall, Medal of Honor: Underground has all the glory of its predecessor and is just as addictive. If you are a fan of first-person shooters, Medal of Honor: Underground is about the best that the PlayStation has to offer. —Chris Hall Medal of Honor: Vanguard

Of these games Williams' are the oldest and most revered, with titles such as Defender, Robotron 2084 and Joust coming from the golden age of arcade games and guided by the hand of coin-op genius Eugene Jarvis. These games, along with lesser titles and follow-ups such as Defender II, Joust 2, Smash TV, Blaster, Sinistar and Splat!, mark Williams as the most gifted of American coin-op developers and all of the games are presented here exactly as they used to be—with 20-year-old graphics but timeless gameplay. Bally's Spy Hunter, Rampage and Root Beer Tapper came a few years later and are still entertaining today, although Satan's Hollow is pretty much the only stinker in the whole package. Then there's the "newest" titles from Atari such as multi-player classic Gauntlet plus Paperboy, Marble Madness, Roadblasters, Rampart, 720º, Super Sprint, Toobin', Klax and Vindicators. The only disappointment of this collection is that although some of these games have video clip interviews and the odd scanned in promotional image the actual presentation and menu systems are very cheaply done. This doesn't take away from the classic beauty of the games themselves though. Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance
Sensibly, instead of trying to do just the same old thing with better graphics, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance brings that most unexpected of presents to the beat-'em-up party: a new idea. Specifically, it gives you the ability to switch, at the press of a shoulder button, between one of three different fighting styles for each character. This works tremendously well, allowing you to change from ranged to close-up to weapons attacks, for example, with ease. The ability to see physical damage appear on your opponent during the course of a match is also a nice touch, but thankfully they haven't thrown the baby out with the bathwater and all the old Mortal Kombat extras are still here: there's a ton of spilt claret if you so much as touch the other player and a range of spine-ripping fatalities and brutalities to show off with at the end of a bout. Admittedly the graphics still aren't all that great, but they do the job and quite frankly anything that manages to make Mortal Kombat fresh and exciting again is doing very well indeed. —David Jenkins Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks

The basic moves are common to all the characters, which makes the game easy to pick up and play but also dooms it to being a bit of a button masher. The greatest complexity comes in the use of each character's unique special move, powered by chakra energy which you have to collect as you go. Setting off one of these moves takes you to a quick cut away where you have to quickly copy the onscreen commands to unleash the ridiculously powerful attacks. Although none of them are particularly original, there are plenty of different game modes to keep your interest, including proper story campaigns for each of the dozen or so characters. The best part of the game though is the authentic presentation, including a very impressive cel-shaded technique that makes the graphics look more like the original magna than even the cartoon. The graphics are the most notable enhancement. Players are far more detailed in this version, sporting the same afros, cornrows, tattoos, armbands, and headbands—among other details—as their real-life counterparts. Further adding to the accurate portrayals is a wider variety of player heights and builds. The game's engine is much smoother, allowing for more natural movement. As previously mentioned, the AI has been improved—players will no longer alternate between standing around helplessly and wandering around aimlessly. The load times that plagued last year's version are greatly shortened. Zone defences are allowed in accordance with the new NBA rules. There are more than 50 new dunk and celebration animations. Franchise mode returns to the series, allowing players to control a team for up to 10 years. As general manager, gamers will have to trade and draft new players in a quest to win an NBA championship. Happily, for those of us who love the sport (and those willing to give it a go) EA Sports have produced a version of the game that quite simply blows all of its electronic opponents out of the water. The graphics, as with many PS2 games are top class, the EA Sports engine really does receive a hammering here as the game plays with camera angles and styles to produce a near-perfect gaming experience—there are times when it's difficult to tell the difference between real TV footage and the output from Madden 2001. But it's the gameplay where Madden excels. A variety of playbooks are offered as defaults with the option to create your own and this flexibility really shines when you take to the field. Among the features, which really pull Madden out, are the ability to superimpose the paths of the intended receivers and the ease with which it's possible to pull off intricate plays without getting lost in a frenzied button-pushing exercise. In fact, within a matter of 10 minutes or so it's possible to be up and running at full power. Commentary, as ever, is provided by the Dream Team of John Madden and Pat Summerall and unlike previous versions of the game provides thoughtful, and occasionally helpful, advice to the player. But the real gem in this game is the introduction of MaddenCards. The player must achieve certain goals to gain these cards that offer a variety of benefits to the player ranging from passes that are always accurate to the opening of classic and fun teams. Gameplay modes range from practise through exhibition games to entire seasons incorporating draft picks, substitutions and more. Put simply, Madden is a stunning game beating off competition from other titles on other platforms. NFS: Need for Speed II

A new create-a-player mode is included for further variety. Also new to the game is the breakaway camera, which features muted replays in letterbox format for a dramatic effect. "GameStory" mode recaps important events in the game, which are then pieced together and replayed. This adds television presentation qualities to the game. For example, a replay of all the goals in a player's hat-trick will be shown with fresh commentary for the entire replay segment. Taking a cue from the Madden series is the new NHL card feature. Gamers are awarded cards for performing various feats, like making three big hits in a period or scoring five goals in a row. There are 189 cards in total—153 player cards and an assortment of Easter egg and celebration cards. Once you hit the slope, you'll immediately encounter high-speed rough-and-tumble racing featuring huge jumps and varied terrain. From riverbeds to steep city roads, No Fear Downhill Mountain Bike Racing is filled with challenging race environments. While the graphics aren't as crisp as they could be, the speed is certainly here, and when players switch to a behind-the-handlebars viewpoint they'll know what it's like to tread the thin line between fear and control. Six riders are available, each flaunting personality and different strengths. Upgrades such as lighter frames or better tires are awarded after beating three separate opponents on each track. A strength meter decreases after holding the pedal button down for long periods of time. Players will learn to let the bike coast on downhill segments, supplying the riders with bursts of strength for pedaling on flat or uphill segments. Oni
The story concerns the TCTF (Technology Crimes Task Force) police sometime in the future. Konoko is an operative with a cybernetic uplink to a little girl android named Shintama. She becomes embroiled in the hunt for a criminal named Muro and his hulking bodyguard, and her battles with his thugs rage through office buildings, chemical plants, an airport and even the TCTF headquarters itself. It's a simplistic story: high on the melodrama, but perfectly in keeping with its anime intent. Like the story, the action serves that goal as well. Oversized rifles, bizarre rocket launchers, plasma cannons and freeze guns make up the arsenal and, should those run out of ammo or get knocked from one's hand, fists and feet complete the set. Konoko can execute a multitude of fairly easy-to-perform flips, combos and devastating punches and kicks. Combat is fierce and always challenging, yet never dull. The animation is flawless and fun to watch, while never being overly gory or tasteless. Think of the jaw-dropping combat in The Matrix and you've got a taste of Oni's action. Oni a refreshing kung-fu alternative to the typical run-and-gun action gaming fare. And you will find Konoko herself a fascinating protagonist to boot (pun intended). —Andrew S. Bub Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny
Taking on the role of a new good guy, Jubei (notable for being perhaps gaming's ugliest star—he makes Mario look like Brad Pitt), you find yourself constantly crossing paths with four other warriors who will or won't help you depending on whether you give them loads of presents or not. A typically wacky Japanese idea, but although the actually process of gift giving can be a bit tiresome the enormous replay value that having such a wide range of potential helpers at various stages brings is excellent. The increased quantity of upgradeable magic and armour available also adds more depth to the game and while at times it can still descend into mindless violence and endless boss battles this is a pleasing move away from Resident Evil and bodes well for a future second sequel. —David Jenkins Onimusha 3
On a technical level the improvements are obvious, with the backgrounds now being in full 3D, instead of just being static picture postcards, and the control system is completely new—ditching the awkward turn-and-move dynamic inherited from Resident Evil. The story, while still largely perfunctory, also offers a genuinely new setting with the fight against evil taking place not just in feudal Japan but also modern day Paris. Once the action does get to the City of Love you're given the chance to control French cop Jacques Blanc as well as the first game's Samanosuke. Both characters are given the features of famous movie stars and although Takeshi Kaneshiro is largely unknown outside of Japan, Jean "Léon" Reno provides the face of Jacques. To make things more interesting Jacques ends up in medieval Japan and Samanosuke has to battle on in France. A helpful little fairy called Ako is able to move between the two eras at will and thereby enables a number of interesting puzzles later in the game. It's hardly a revelation in originality but for simple demon-bashing fun Onimusha 3 is hard to beat. —David Jenkins Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams
Orphen: Scion of Sorcery
As Orphen—it's his name apparently, rather than Frank or even Martin—it's your job to explore the intricate in-game world, ably assisted by a couple of companions and a handful of other characters which can be picked up along the way, in a typical large-scale Japanese tale of myth, magic and huge monsters. Eschewing the combat system so beloved of RPG-ers everywhere, Orphen has opted for a simple and very playable control system involving only the symbol buttons on the PS2 controller. These can be assigned to suit, giving the player access to a subset of the huge range of spells and weapons available throughout the game. Picking the game is easy enough thanks to a comprehensive tutorial system, thoughtfully built in by the game producers (big thumbs up for this, as it gives far more information than the user manuals ever do). Gameplay is interesting to say the least and provides some irritations, which may put off the less than dedicated player. The CGI movies, marvellous though they are, are a little stilted and in places totally disjointed, with no way of skipping them through judicious use of the X key. Whilst not everyone's cup of tea, Orphen is an interesting and intriguing game which, while being far from perfect, is an enjoyable romp which will cheerfully pass a good many hours.—James Gordon Outlaw Golf

Key to PES 7 is a proprietary adaptive AI system entitled Teamvision. Unique to the Konami game, Teamvision is a sophisticated AI programming that learns and adapts according to an individuals style of play. As such, it will learn new ways to build attacks and to counter specific movements and previous attacking or defensive errors, ensuring games are more in line with the tactical but flowing nature of the real thing. With the Pro Evolution Soccer series renowned for its fluid, realistic gameplay, the new game builds on the implementation of Teamvision with additional key advances. As with previous releases since its inception in 1996, the ball is again treated as a separate entity, with the timing of shots entirely down to the player, while the new AI ensures that defenders work to close down space and block efforts on goal. Similarly, distribution of passes works along the same lines, with players using the space available to them to switch the ball. Close control has also been enhanced with more control when dribbling the ball, and a number of subtle moves added to bypass defenders and move the ball into space. Working in conjunction with the Teamvision system, every aspect of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008s on-field play has been reworked and fine-tuned to create the balanced and strategic play of a high stakes match. Set-pieces have been improved, with full control given over the number of players and the position of the defensive wall. A wider range of set piece options are also available to make use of specific talents within the team. PES 2009: Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 [CIB]

Among the new game modes are the Tiger Challenge and Speed Golf. In the Tiger Challenge, you compete as Woods against a progression of 17 players—some PGA Tour players and some original EA Sports characters—to earn cash rewards and the right to unlock hidden golfers. You can also unlock individual holes on Tiger's Dream 18, a course designed by Woods himself. Speed Golf mode features a fast and furious race to the hole in which you can either compete by yourself or split-screen against another player. Money is earned in head-to-head competition by finishing the hole first, and through bonuses for such things as teeing off first and hitting a longer drive than your opponent. Any money earned is subsequently drained from your opponent's total, creating all-out mayhem on the course. Other game modes offer stroke, match, and tournament play, skins, scenarios, and practice. Also, Play Now mode places you in a helpful scenario/tutorial situation that you must complete before moving on to further options. Visually, the game's many courses and related elements depict a stunning, near-live experience. From the well-kept fairways and greens of Pebble Beach and the TPC at Sawgrass, to the otherworldly dazzle of Copperhead Canyon, the courses come alive with rainy mists, murky fogs, and glowing sunsets. The only game based directly on the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, this is your chance to control Cap’n Jack Sparrow as he staggers his way through sword fights in his quest to save his own soul from Davy Jones. The lowdown: Movie tie-ins don’t have the best of reputations in the video games world but this does go to some effort to try and repeat the easy charm and constant action of Dead Man’s Chest. The game looks great at least, with Jack’s peculiar swagger replicated perfectly, and the movie soundtrack is superb. There’s also some neat puzzles to solve in the game, usually revolving around blowing up large portions of the scenery with exploding barrels. The combat though is a might too simplistic for its own good, with a strictly regimented way of fighting the three different styles of enemy. Most exciting moment: The best bit by far in the game is the completely separate multiplayer mode where you get to control your own pirate ship on the high seas. It’s a great little action game and with four friends a lot more fun than most of the single player game. Since you ask: Dead Man’s Chest is available on all three portable formats but not on the home consoles or PC. Instead the PS2 and PC has a Pirates of the Caribbean game named The Legend of Jack Sparrow, which is more of a prequel to the new movie. The bottom line: A good movie tie-in but only an average game. HARRISON DENT Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow [CIB]

Pop Idol
The idea is simple. You create a singer and take them through the heats and qualifying rounds to the final. If all goes to plan, you get crowned the Pop Idol. If it doesn't, you get to suffer the acid tongues of the three judges, including the infamous Simon Cowell. Clearly, a video game is going to have troubling assessing your vocal talents and that is a downfall. Instead, Pop Idol substitutes a simple rhythm-style game, not a million miles from classics such as Parappa the Rappa. Basically, symbols correlating to your control pad head towards the middle of the screen and you need to have the relevant button pressed at exactly the right moment. The more you get it right, the better you do. You're also assessed on your outfit, which you choose along with your song before every round. It's ultimately quite a simple, straightforward title and one that could have been better, could have been worse. It's going to find favour more easily with the casual, less demanding gamer, though, and dedicated fans of the show. —Simon Brew PoPoLoCrois
Populous: The Beginning
The game takes the form of a series of scenarios, in which you invariably have to beat seven bells out of the opposing tribes. It's important to nurture your followers, as it is their worship that grants you your magical abilities. So build your village well and stock up on warriors to ensure that, even if you die, their veneration will ensure your resurrection. As the game progresses, the scenarios get more and more complex, and your survival more difficult. Thankfully, your powers steadily increase also. If there's one criticism to make of this deeply involving game it's that the learning curve is a bit skew-whiff. For the first half-a-dozen scenarios, you're happily bumbling along, making mincemeat of the opposition; then suddenly—bam!—things get much harder. If anything, though, this only serves to fuel your determination to crush the infidels ever more soundly. It's a great game, but just mind you don't get too many delusions of grandeur when you play it. —David Bailey Porsche Challenge

PQ: Practical Intelligence Quotient
Pride & Prejudice
There are so many delights to director Joe Wright’s take on the story, and his direction is a strong place to start. In spite of having to condense the tale to fit a movie running time, he nonetheless injects a real energy and intelligence to his retelling, and he’s served supremely well by his cast. Backed up by strong support by the likes of Brenda Blethyn and Donald Sutherland, it’s Keira Knightley in the lead turn who’s a real surprise here. Her performance is a real joy, and very much at the core of the film’s success. The film inevitably draws comparison with the superb 1995 BBC adaptation, and while arguably it doesn’t quite scale the same peaks, it’s to the credit of the filmmakers that their version still holds strong. For this is a tremendously enjoyable drama, and one that should continue to find an audience for a long time to come. An excellent film.—Simon Brew Pro Backgammon

Pro Evolution Soccer 2
Pro Evolution Soccer 3
The first thing you'll notice in this third instalment is how much more lifelike it is. Not only are the graphics much more detailed, but the player animation is now realistically fluent and the ball behaves as an actual Size 5 would. Squint and you really will think you're watching Sky Sports. Pro Evolution Soccer 3's gameplay is perfectly balanced. Whatever your favoured way of playing the Beautiful Game (total football or long ball, it's up to you) Pro Evolution Soccer 3 accommodates that preference. Controls are sharp and responsive, and with the right combination of button presses it's possible to perform just about any manoeuvre or trick in Real Madrid's repertoire. That's how comprehensive this simulation is. As a single-player experience, Pro Evolution Soccer 3 is a far sight more challenging than its predecessors were: the Master League mode is expanded still further and the artificial intelligence is a tough nut to crack. And, as was expected, this third game in the series takes multiplayer PlayStation 2 gaming to new heights. —Jonti Davies Pro Evolution Soccer 4
Although there was little room for improvement over Pro Evolution Soccer 3's supreme gameplay, Konami has seemingly found it. Dribbling has been given especial attention; the result is tighter control. Crosses, too, are now easier to perform exactly as desired. Also, penalty kicks and free kicks offer increased accuracy with their adoption of a new control system. Some 136 club sides, including all 56 teams of the Spanish, Italian and Dutch leagues (these are officially licensed) are on offer in Pro Evolution Soccer 4, as well as 50-odd national teams. Typically, this new version of Pro Evolution is the most comprehensive to date—the new season in videogame football kicks off in spectacular fashion. —Jonti Davies Pro Evolution Soccer 5
Pro Evolution Soccer 5
Everything fans could hope for is here: officially licensed leagues from Italy, Spain and Holland line up alongside a replica of the Premiership, as well as the French and German championships. In all, that amounts to 136 club sides and 57 national teams. Plus there's a more detailed Master League, domestic European competitions, and a comprehensive Edit Mode. The lowdown: The definitive footie series returns to defend its crown, and how it sparkles when held up to the light. Pro Evolution 5's gameplay has been enhanced to provide a more lifelike version of the beautiful game: players utilise their upper bodies more in the challenge, have more tricks at their disposal, and can now curl shots with pinpoint accuracy. This is total football. Most exciting moment: Scoring a virtual replica of Roberto Carlos' legendary free-kick against France — the one with the unbelievable swerve— and then dancing around the living room like a lunatic. The Quake games have had a long-standing relationship with the PC user, dating back to their predecessors "Doom" and its sequels, and has by many gamers been considered to be some of the best first-person shooters on the platform. Now is the time, like many of its predecessors, for the PlayStation 2 to have a crack at the whip, and it copes with the job elegantly, hardly breaking a sweat. The player is placed in a beautifully detailed arena with a bunch of nasty killers and has to survive as long as possible until he or she is the only survivor, or finds the flag and is able to hold it for one minute. It sounds simple, but it's anything but. With stunning graphics, amazing speed and stomach-churning sounds, this game looks good and plays well But it lacks the one element that makes the PC and Dreamcast versions of the game so good: online play. Having said that, it compensates with a four-player option—allowing up to four people to play on the same console in quad-screen action. Rayman Revolution
Like past instalments, Rayman 2: Revolution borrows gameplay elements from a variety of different sources, but they are sources worth borrowing from. Several elements from Rayman 2: The Great Escape have been pilfered, including a similar story line. Revolution has a good combination of beautiful graphics, great controls, and enhanced gameplay. This will astound hard core gamers and those new to the hobby. There is enough puzzle solving, lever pulling, item collecting and platform jumping action to keep even the most ardent platform enthusiast busy for quite some time. Admiral Razorbeard and his army of robots have enslaved the planet, and it's your job in Revolution to help Rayman search for pieces of the Primordial Core and summon Polokus to get rid of the robotic pirates. The levels are the same as in The Great Escape, but, due to the power of the PS2 and the detail put into reworking the levels for the game, they look spectacular. Ubi Soft has mixed old-school gameplay with graphical power, and mixed together those ingredients make this game a must-play for gamers of all ages. Despite the borrowed elements from The Great Escape, Revolution for the PS2 offers up plenty of new thrills that will make the hearts of platform gamers skip a beat, just like the first time they played Mario 64 or Crash Bandicoot. Red Faction 2
Set a few years after the first game but curiously failing to feature Parker, the hero from the original, Red Faction II casts you as Alias, a nanotech-enhanced soldier out to bring down the Soviet-style Commonwealth that has decided to blight the land in the way that evil dictatorships always seem to in video games. The primary gimmick of the Red Faction games is the Geo-Mod (geometry modification) graphics engine which allows you to destroy almost any wall, ceiling or floor in order to proceed or simply to just have a bit of a laugh. The biggest problem with the first game was its terrible loading times that really interrupted the flow of the game, but that's been sorted out for this sequel, which also includes improvements to the previously spartan multi-player modes. As you'd expect there are also lots of new vehicles to drive—including a very natty robotic power suit—plus tons more weapons and even a new Halo-style shield system. Admittedly none of this is terribly original, and the frame rate can stutter on occasion, but it's still lots of fun for red-blooded men and women. —David Jenkins This review refers to the PlayStation 2 version of the game Reel Fishing

Resident Evil Outbreak
The most notable aspect about Outbreak is the graphics—they're almost as good as the GameCube versions and yet they're in full 3-D instead of just having static 2-D backdrops. Together with the constant calls for help from other people this makes the game one of the most cinematic yet, although the slow-paced psychological horror of the first game has been replaced by all-out fast-paced terror. Things are made even more difficult since most of the eight characters you can choose to play as are ordinary men and women, not super-cops, so you usually start the game with no weapons other than those you can find scattered around. Although perhaps not the best game in the Resident Evil series, Outbreak is still well worth a look for fans of the genre.—David Jenkins Resident Evil: Dead Aim

You play as Nathan Hale, a U.S. soldier immune to the Chimera’s mutagenic virus Chimera spaceships appear over the America's coasts Resistance is set in an alternative 1953, where World War II never happened Fans originally accused the monster in the movie Cloverfield of being inspired by the Chimera Although the single-player story mode features much more variety than the original, with many new weapons and Godzilla-sized enemy bosses, the game’s real appeal has always been the multiplayer. There’s now a whole separate story mode to play co-operatively with friends, either in split screen mode or with up to seven people online. There were some complaints that the original played the first-person shooter formula a little too safe, but the unique new 60-person online versus mode should help to silence most critics for this sequel. Rez
Graphically, Rez is gorgeous. Wire-frame cities, valleys and pyramids rise up as you pass and colours melt all over the screen as you dispose of your opponents. End of level bosses are ingeniously designed and jaw-dropping. Blue power-ups can help evolve your character from the simple humanoid you begin with to various more sophisticated forms—too many hits though and you regress to a basic spheroid shape. Red power ups fill up your overdrive gauge (smart-bomb to you and me), which will eliminate everything on screen. Another nice touch is added by the synchronisation of the thumping techno beats of the soundtrack with the rumbling of the controller. Rez isn't going to be to everyone's taste: it may be too abstract and the action may be too relaxed for some. There are only five levels but you can unlock a myriad of different modes, views and colours to enhance a game that despite being short is certainly not short of replay value. Those who dislike the Ridge Racer series will still dislike the power sliding, and it's lack of tracks. The tracks included here feature designs that embody non-stop excitement with hair-pin turns and jumps galore. With both this and the more sober Gran Turismo 2000, gamers can't complain about any lack of quality racers. While radically different from each other, both are great games and definitely worth checking out. —Todd Mowatt Risk: Global Domination

Rugby
Rugby 2001 is a port of the title released last year for the PC and has retained the twitchy camera system, which has a tendency to go walkabout at crucial moments. However, the PlayStation 2 controller makes for a more intuitive interface than the mouse/keyboard combo, especially at rucks and mauls, when you'll be doing more button bashing than during a bout of Tekken. As with all EA sports titles there's a very slick front end and menu system with 20 international teams (though disappointingly no representative sides such as the Lions or Barbarians) with reasonably up-to-date rosters and 23 stadia. You can choose to play a Six Nations, Tri Nations or World Cup tournament or a one-off friendly. Performance levels of all the teams can be altered, so if you support one of the minor nations you can play against the likes of Australia and still have a chance of winning. Tactically rugby can be very complicated and this is reflected in the Dynamic Team Control, which lets you determine your set plays for line-outs, scrums etc. These can be altered on the fly during play and provide a tactical depth that will appeal to fans of the Madden NFL series. Rugby 2001 is not a complete simulation—that would be virtually impossible given the complexity of the laws of the game—but it is an exciting arcade-style experience. Anyone who has played FIFA in any of its guises will feel at home. If you already own Jonah Lomu then consider trading up—the gameplay isn't much different but the stats are more up-to-date and the graphics are much improved (even if they don't do full justice to the PS2's capabilities). This is a fast-moving and enjoyable title, especially in two-player mode. —Michael Bartley Rugby 2004

The only problems with the game are its slightly jagged-looking graphics—they look somewhat unfinished—and the fact that despite the plethora of cars that can be unlocked, only a handful are highly rated enough to win the races. You'll probably stick to a few favourites and ignore the rest. But these problems are blown away by the frenetic sense of speed, the fun track design, and the mayhem caused by being able to unleash a tornado on someone who cuts you off the track. —Andrew S Bub R·Type Final

Sega Superstars
It features twelve minigames in all, each drawing inspiration from a Sega hit. Thus, the Sonic section demands a balancing act as you use your body to guide gaming’s most infamous hedgehog on his latest quest for coins. Meanwhile, the Virtua Striker segment is more simplistic—you simply head a football and try and hit various targets, whilst Virtua Fighter is great as you punch and kick your opponent into submission. Space Channel 5 has you mimicking dance movements meanwhile, and Samba de Amigo is outstanding fun, as your arms become substitutes for maracas. The highlight though is born from one of the firm’s lower profile franchises. Puyo Pop is a work of some genius, as you use your body to direct blobs into the right colour receptacle. You’ll find yourself contorting into distinctly unhealthy shapes as you try to beat the top score, and having similarly unhealthy amounts of fun as you do so. In a pack of twelve, it’s unsurprising that not everything hits, and we can’t see the House of the Dead nor Billy Hatcher segments being used too often. But nonetheless Sega Superstars delivers buckets of entertainment, and then some. Best played in numbers, but no slouch with just one, it’s arguably the finest EyeToy game to date.—Simon Brew Sensible Soccer 2006

Sheep, Dog 'n' Wolf's levels feature clever puzzles which Ralph must chain various items together to solve. Discerning the right actions and order was pleasantly challenging in this preview build. Using the items is a real treat, since it captures the feel of seeing these ludicrous creations on the cartoons. You'll get to use female sheep perfume, safes, rockets, giant rubber bands, and more. The character's overstated movements, such as Ralph's giant-stepped tiptoeing, further add to the Looney Tunes feel. Sheep, Dog 'n' Wolf is shaping up to be a great game that should appeal to gamers of all ages. —Raymond M Padilla Shield, The : The Game [CIB]

Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 2: Director's Cut
Gameplay is largely puzzle-based. Much of it involves gathering clues and items to solve each puzzle. There are a few fights thrown in, but these are quite easy, and mostly used to show off the developers' bizarre creations. The level of both puzzles and fighting can be adjusted to match each player's skill level. Although its mechanics are rudimentary, the game's presentation is anything but. A heavy use of fog is the game's hallmark effect, greatly adding to the mood. Sound—both effects and music—alternates between eerie silence and sudden, shocking crescendos. Although the graphics and sound are both top-notch, the real star of this game is the story. It's very rich and intricate—a sharp contrast to the banal scenarios that frame most games. The game is short (around 10 hours), but you'll want to give it another go to discover its multiple endings and secret items. Despite basic gameplay, Silent Hill 2 is an excellent choice for gamers looking for cerebral thrills. Parents should note that in addition to violence and gore, this game deals with topics like suicide, murder, and euthanasia. —Raymond M. Padilla Simpsons Road Rage
The main element of the game is the aforementioned Crazy Taxi-esque "Road Rage" mode. There are also Sunday Drive, multiplayer and mission modes. Sunday Drive allows you to pootle round the various levels at leisure for both sightseeing and tactical route-planning reasons; this is the best way to find those sneaky short cuts and hidden areas. Story mode adds a little extra sparkle to the game, with a set series of missions to complete—for example, Homer's skived off work for the afternoon and you, as Bart, have to sneak your dad past the evil Mr Burns and back into work. As with most racing games, you're rewarded for reaching set point totals and completing the missions, but the difference with Simpson's Road Rage is that you get to choose your reward, be it unlocking one of the secret characters like Groundskeeper Willie and his tractor or opening extra maps like the Springfield nuclear power plant. The real high point of Simpson's Road Rage, though, is the sound. No Homer-a-likes here—each character has their own real voice from the show, the one-liners aren't too repetitive and do lend themselves to the type of situation that the characters find themselves in, and some of the lines are laugh-out-loud funny. All in all, recommended for fans of the show, Crazy Taxi nuts and those gamers who are partial to unpretentious pick-up-and-play gaming. —Laurent S Hall Simpsons Skateboarding, The
Simpsons Wrestling
Boasting the involvement of 19 characters from the TV series, complete with accompanying sampled sounds and venues lifted from the show, the aim is to take control of a character and battle to be the Springfield Champion. Each character comes with their own taunts and moves (for instance, Barney attacks with a beer pot, while Homer will strike you down with his bowling ball), and although the game perhaps too often descends into a melee of random button hammering, it's fun trying out the different characters (some of which are locked at the start). Each bout is also enlivened by the various power-ups that appear throughout the ring (which serve up extra fighting options), and the taunt mode, which gives you a brief period of invulnerability. Simpsons Wrestling never has any pretensions about being more than an enjoyable little fighter. That's fortunate, because it's no threat to the current fighting game champions. Yet while this is best described as short-lived entertainment, it's still certainly fun while it lasts. —Simon Brew Simpsons, The

Simpsons, The: Hit & Run
Like many of the more recent Simpsons games Hit & Run is primarily a racing game—a racing game that's very obviously using Grand Theft Auto as its primary inspiration. There's less swearing and gore but just as much running people over and driving lots of different vehicles. You can't steal them off the street, admittedly, and the missions are presented in a much more linear fashion, but otherwise this is GTA: Springfield through and through. Somewhat embarrassingly for GTA, the on-the-foot sections are actually handled rather better than Rockstar's game, with a fairly non-rubbish camera and a decent control system that actually makes the occasional platform sections rather fun. Most of the game is about driving, though, whether it be racing Principle Skinner to school in order to give Lisa her homework or helping Bart buy some illegal fireworks from around town. It's only when controlling underage characters such as Bart that the game's concept really starts to seem peculiar (he only drives unmotorised vehicles) but otherwise the addition of all the proper voice actors from the TV show make this the first Simpsons game ever that is in any way worthy of a purchase. —David Jenkins Sine Mora

Singularity
It's 2010. A powerful and wealthy Russian mercenary has reopened a mysterious research base on Katorga-12, an island off the coast of Siberia. This island was the site of Soviet experimentation in the 1950s that led to a catastrophic, Chernobyl-sized accident - the Singularity - that fractured time itself. Katorga-12 was abandoned, locked down and shrouded in secrecy until today. You play as Nate Renko, a U.S. Air Force pilot sent on a recon mission to investigate new, wild readings coming from Katorga-12. Your plane is brought down, and you quickly find yourself in the middle of a massive Russian cover up that started during the Cold War and that threatens all of humanity today. You fight to survive, and to stop the Singularity from spreading and destroying the world. Intense Combat: Fight your way through an ever-shifting environment haunted with time-ravaged creatures, while sudden time waves hurl you back and forth between 1950 and the present day.Time as a Weapon: Use the TMD - the Time Manipulation Device - to change the age of objects and enemies for your combat advantage.Conspiracy-Driven Storyline: Unravel the mystery behind this top-secret Russian military experiment before it's too late.Epic Sci-Fi Environments: Explore a graphically rich, fully interactive world with Unreal 3-powered lighting, physics, and effects.Compelling Multiplayer: Test your skills and strategy in unique, time-based multiplayer action spanning across two eras. It has to be said from the off that the graphics are disappointing for a machine as powerful as the PS2, with bland scenery at every turn; but the scenery soon takes a backseat to the gameplay, which is as challenging as any title yet to hit Sony's baby. The controls work surprisingly well; with no room for 50+ key combos the Dual Shock 2's left analogue stick controls the aircraft's roll, the icon buttons determine throttle and the shoulder buttons operate flaps and airbrakes. It's a delightfully simple system that becomes second nature in a short time. The real beauty of this game is its speed, which, while never too fast, is quick enough to make navigation in the tight confines of the underground cave systems and canyons really tricky. For extra variety landings on moving trains and aircraft carriers are thrown in. All told, this is a very cool title that dares to be different and gets away with it. The graphics are a bit of a letdown, but if you can push that aside this is a game that will have you playing for weeks if not months—a must-have for those looking for something that breaks away from the norm. —Chris Russell Sky Surfer

The Sony PlayStation truly shines with 3D-rendered action games, such as Tomb Raider and Spider-Man. These and other 3D-based titles place players in the middle of elaborate gaming environments that take full advantage of the system's ability to render up to 360,000 polygons per second. The PlayStation also has the capability to display 16.8 million colours simultaneously and can support full-frame video playback at 30 frames per second. In addition to impressive graphics, the PlayStation also offers CD-quality sound. Each PlayStation disc has the capacity to store up to 650 MB of data—significantly more information than can be stored on cartridge-based games. As an added bonus, the PlayStation will even play your favourite music CDs (accompanied by a selection of cool graphics). Additionally, the PlayStation now comes packed with Sony's impressive dual shock controller, which allows players to feel every punch, kick and rumble during gameplay. The controller features dual-analogue thumb joysticks and round rubber grips for improved game control and comfort. Separate accessories that could enhance the PlayStation experience include an additional controller—allowing two-player action—and a memory card so players can save their progress in a game. —Brett Atwood Sony Playstation 2 (PS2)

Soul Blade
Soul Calibur II
SoulCalibur's brilliance is not due to any particularly innovative features—it could legitimately be described as simply Tekken with weapons. It's just that it does everything with more panache and imagination than the rest. Instead of awkward, staccato moves, SoulCalibur offers gloriously flowing, instinctive combos that often leaves you gasping at your own character's athleticism. Of course beat-'em-ups aren't known for their innovation and SoulCalibur II doesn't really deviate too far from its original premise of 16th century men and women hitting each other with a variety of swords, sticks and other meleé weapons. The whole tactical nature of the battles has been altered, though, to create a deeper game with blocks and counters now far more important and the glorious new animation system able to adapt each move depending on the direction and speed you're moving in. One point of true innovation in the original game was its unusually complex and rewarding single-player mode and this has been expanded for the sequel as you compete under a variety of different conditions to earn money and buy new weapons, costumes and extras. —David Jenkins Soul Reaver 2
Although often fairly functional the graphics convey the atmosphere adequately enough and the game camera actually works very well—which is a rarity in itself. There are also no load times at all, and you wander throughout the game world never setting eyes upon the dreaded words "Now Loading". In fact, the only real weak link is the storyline and dialogue, which is the biggest load of sub-Anne Rice-style tosh you could ever hope to avoid. Still, if your book collection is primarily composed of trilogies, you may even enjoy that. It may not be the most original game in the world but Soul Reaver 2 is actually rather good and fares surprisingly well against the somewhat similarly themed Devil May Cry. It's a rather different beast to Capcom's slash-'em-up, though, and some may even prefer its slightly slower, more thoughtful pace.—David Jenkins Soviet Strike

SSX Tricky
SSX Tricky removes two characters from the previous game and adds five new ones and adds two new race locations—Garibaldi and Alaska—to the already beefed up World Circuit. Features have also been added to the older tracks, effectively making them new again. Tricky improves the graphics a bit and refines the controls. The game also tweaks the basic gameplay by letting you upgrade your boarder's stats in races, but also forcing you to attempt and master the show-off mode as well. And they went a long way toward improving the challenge by evening out the learning curve. The first game tended to be a cakewalk until the later races in each set; this time your rivals get more intense and aggressive depending upon the lap you're taking. As in the first game, personality is everything—not only in terms of voice acting, but also in how you treat the other riders. The game has three basic attitudes in regard to you. If you block and attack characters too much, they'll remember it and actively seek you out. If you help one or two of them they become your allies, warning you of danger or fending off attackers. In many ways SSX Tricky is only an upgrade to the previous game. Admittedly, what's been added doesn't look like enough to equal buying the game all over again. But these changes are deep enough to change everything, and delight even fans who are tired of, or mastered, the first game. Maybe that's the most impressive über-trick of them all. —Bob Andrews Star Trek: Encounters
Star Trek: Invasion
Set in the timeline of the Next Generation TV and film series, Invasion has you cast in the role of a fighter pilot destined for a big part in the upcoming war against the Earth-bound Borg. The Borg is not the only Trek race to show up in here; the Cardassians, Klingons, and Bajorans are all along, too. Whilst actors Michael Dorn as Worf and Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard contribute good voice acting to an all-around solid production. The visuals in Invasion are uniformly sharp and show an attention to detail that almost makes the old PlayStation beg for mercy. The planets, the ships, the explosions (especially the explosions!) are top notch. Disturbingly, the controls in Invasion can be a little to sensitve at times and are suited to perhaps better space jokeys amongst us. Perhaps because it is set in the more politically correct universe of Star Trek, Invasion does lack Colony Wars' level of intense, gritty combat and its story isn't nearly as engaging. Yet, for a laser-blast filled journey into the final frontier, it's still a fun ride.—Mark Brooks Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

You play as one of five selectable characters that's going up against The Corporation—a tyrannical group that has the city in an iron grip. The city is in an utter state of disarray and the citizens are rebelling. Amazingly, up to 250 characters can be rioting on screen; it's very surprising that the developers were able to render so many moving characters while keeping a smooth frame rate. Basic gameplay consists of picking up numerous weapons and objects to cause as much damage as humanly possible. Providing context to the mindless violence are Revolution and Chaos modes: the former is the game's story mode, with over 175 missions, while the latter is a single-session mode with a few variations. For the most part, State of Emergency is an enjoyable cacophony of senseless violence, but there are some flaws: although Revolution boasts an impressive number of missions, they do get repetitive; the game screams for a multiplayer mode, but it's strictly one-player. In spite of these flaws, the game remains addictive and fun. It bears repeating that gamers looking for another GTA3 will not find it here: this game provides an arcade-like experience that's excellent, but in a very different way. Parents should note that this game carries an 18 rating for violence and gore. —Raymond M Padilla Stealth Inc: A Clone In The Dark

Tekken - Dark Resurrection
Tekken 1
Tekken 2
Tekken 3
Chock full of goodies—most of which remain hidden until certain requirements are met—Tekken 3 rewards players' persistent endeavours with secret characters, alternate costumes and yet another mode of play, Tekken ball, a bizarre variation on volleyball. Also, beating the game's arcade mode allows players to view a beautifully animated epilogue that's specific to whichever fighter they used. And once you've seen one, you just have to see them all. —Joe Hon Tekken 4
Being a beat-'em-up, Tekken 4 doesn't have the most complex of rule sets: you punch and kick your opponent until they fall down. But what separates the wheat from the chaff with this sort of game is how easy and instinctive it is to pull off the various gravity-defying moves and how much tactics there are once you know exactly what you're doing. Tekken has been accused of having too much of the former and not enough of the latter, but this newest version is a touch more technical; indeed, it seems to take on some of the features which the more complex Virtua Fighter series has discarded, namely enclosed, variable-height arenas and more emphasis on 3-D movement via the dodge button. The whole package makes for a very worthy sequel with some excellent graphics and even interactive scenery (you can punch some of the crowd watching you "by mistake"). Some of the new characters are excellent, too, particularly Steve the boxer who has no kick moves but a custom set of ducks and weaves instead. In a genre that is usually a bit of a wasteland of originality, Tekken 4 has a pleasing amount of new ideas and together with the top graphics it should entertain even the most resolute of pacifists. —David Jenkins Tekken 5 [CIB]

Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven
During the first mission you're required to choose a number of weapons to aid you in your immediate tasks. Throughout the game more and more weapons, from melée to ranged weapons, are added to your arsenal depending on your performance during each level; your chosen weapons dictate how you approach the mission goals. The silent approach is encouraged and there's a variety of graphically satisfying stealth kills that will only work if you remain elusive and strike unexpectedly and silently. Aside from the stealth kills, graphically the game is a mixed bag. Light shimmers off your sword menacingly, but the environments are textureless and repetitive and the game fails to maximise on differences between light and dark areas to add to the experience. Also, the stealth dynamic is made less challenging by the shortsightedness and slow reactions of the enemy guards and the iffy AI: guards will give up searching for you within seconds and are unable to follow you through doors. This turns a potentially atmospheric and tactical stealth game into a hack-and-slash arcade romp. Multi-player options are included though, so if you feel the need for a more realistic opponent you may want to call a friend. Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven remains an enjoyable experience despite the flaws. While being pretty basic, it remains challenging; numerous set pieces manage to paper over some of the weaknesses. It's just a shame that after doing so much to establish and define the stealth-game genre this fails to raise the bar or introduce any novel elements. It feels more like an update of the first game, and while this is no bad thing, fans will probably be expecting more; gamers new to the series may be less forgiving towards it. —Chris Ryan Test Drive 4

The one thing that this game does share with GoldenEye 007 is its incredible speed. One of the goals the design team set out to achieve is a lightning fast frame rate of 60 frames-per-second, and so far it looks as though they have blasted through the speed barrier with TimeSplitters. The heart and soul of this game is its multiplayer mode, with a groundbreaking mapmaker feature in tow. Its multiplayer modes consist of a two-player co-operative mode, deathmatch, Capture the Bag, Bank Job, Last Stand (players against a huge assortment of enemies), Escort (protect another character through an entire level), Knock Out, Flag Tag and Reverse Flag Tag play modes. The game also offers a single-player component that will include nine levels that span a few decades, from the early part of the 20th century to the middle of the 21st Century. They are in order: Tomb 1935, Village 1950, Mansion 1965, Chinese 1970, Industrial 1985, Docks 2000, Sci-Fi 2005, Planet 2020 and Launch 2035. —Todd Mowatt TOCA Race Driver 3

What Codemasters have managed to do is take a little bit from the past and a little from the future and created a game for the PlayStation that is worthy title for the send off of the console in its present format. With Championship, Free Race, Time Trial and Quick Race, this game has everything you would come to expect from a racing game, yet it is the way in which this are executed that brings TOCA out from all the rest. Graphically TOCA is one of the best racing games on the PlayStation. Imagine, if you will Gran Turismo 2, times that by ten and your starting to get there. Couple this with 14 cars simultaneously on the track racing with you at any one time and you start to get the picture of how involved this game is. Also very strong is the gameplay, with nice little features that will keep you clued in the months to come. The better you do, the more bonus cars you can earn with the game eventually offering a whopping 40 vehicles ranging from a Daimler Chrysler to the Lotus Elise which you can crash to smithereens for TOCA world Touring Cars includes damage detail. Codemasters have managed to produce a game that is a great send off to the PlayStation, one of those driving/racing games that in years gone by we will fondly look back and say "Ahh!" to. —Stuart Miles Tom & Jerry: War of the Whiskers

Unlike previous games in the series, this version lets you visit any of the gaming areas in any order that you prefer. This change enables beginning players to immediately appreciate the diverse gaming environments and designs of different levels that have captivated advanced gamers for the duration of the popular series. Unlike most action shooting games, Tomb Raider III requires a heavy dose of puzzle solving. In fact, fast reflexes and shooting skills are probably less important than your ability to figure out the best way to unlock the secrets that will advance your entry into new and hidden areas. With clever gameplay and eye-opening 3-D graphics, the third entry in the Tomb Raider series significantly advances the quality of one of the strongest franchises in the history of video games. —Brett Atwood Tommi Makinen Rally
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
Solo players will skate to win the world championship, with over 100 moves available to score points, including slides, grinds, and landing tricks. A split screen allows players to compete against each other. During this head-to-head mode, you can score style points, race between obstacles, or play tag. If you opt for graffiti mode, both players compete against each other by "tagging" objects while performing their tricks. A replay mode is available for players to view highlights at the end of a game. The level design is enormous, with 10 interactive courses, including skate and pool parks, half pipes, and a downtown area. Each skating environment is filled with secret places, shortcuts, and obstacles. Once you get the moves down, you can perform a trick off of just about any object that you see. Tony Hawk is not the only star in this game—the music stands strong on its own. Cool cuts come from Primus and the Dead Kennedys—which can be inspiring during the frantic onscreen action. While game control is relatively solid, there are some minor problems in tight areas. This title is so large it is overwhelming, given the enormity of levels and available moves. However, persistent skate pros will master this game with a little practice. (Fortunately, there is a practice mode to scrape your knees on.) —Kasty Thomas Pros:Variety of moves and tricksExcellent course design and graphicsSolid controlsCons:Control problems in tight areas Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
For starters, people who have mastered Tony Hawk's Pro Skater will be able to take their skills to a new level. A new trick called a manual allows players to balance on the forward or rear trucks of the skateboard. Manuals bridge other already-established moves and combos, making it possible to rack bigger scores than ever before and therefore adding a whole new level of challenge for veteran players. In the original game, an open space between rails, bowls, cars, or ramps provided a small breather and a chance to survey your surroundings. This time you will be encouraged to manual between such spots, thereby increasing your point total. But the manual isn't an automatic movement; it requires balance and dexterity. Therefore, you'll have less time to take in your next opportunity and will be much more likely to miss it the first time through. Overall, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 serves up extra helpings of some very nice goodies. Better characters, and more of them: The original models look sick compared to the larger skaters and better textures of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. There are also new playable characters: Steve Caballero, Eric Koston, and Rodney Mullen have been added to the cast. More tricks to play with such as Lip tricks now include awesome new handplants, rock 'n' rolls, and stalls. As it should be in a game (and sport) that has more and more "star power", signature riders now have more of their signature moves. Add in the aforementioned manual and you've pretty much got it all. More locations with new scenes are carved out of New York, the Skatestreet in Ventura, California, as well as updated locales in Miami and Philadelphia. There is a total of eight—all big, all bold. And you are not even tied down to the good ol' US of A. What would you say to grinding through the streets of France? There is more music including Anthrax's version of Public Enemy's Bring the Noise, but Activision's efforts don't end there. Even with all the goods this game has, it would be a supreme letdown to freeze out the top music tracks. The park creator is back in the new game, and Neversoft has also added a create-a-player feature so you can enhance the existing pros, turning them into new skaters. Also, a new customisation system lets you skate to earn enough money for new duds and accessories. Features like this, added to what returns from last year, make Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 a must-have for anybody on the planet. —Todd Mowatt Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
The biggest addition this time around is the revert, which when combined with the manual introduced in the previous game lets players string together some amazing vert and grind combos. Once again, every ledge you see in the game is grindable, and the massive levels are packed with switches, hidden areas, and other secrets that will take months to fully explore (and exploit). Things are a little on the chunky side graphically, but that's to be expected with the PlayStation. Regardless, the animation is smooth and the frame rate stays high despite the enormous and complex environments this game lets players explore. The eclectic soundtrack—which features acts from the Ramones to Del tha Funky Homosapien—is another highlight, but it's still the Zen-like feeling you get from chaining together combo after outrageous combo that keeps you coming back for more. —T Byrl Baker Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4
Curiously, the graphics are still not particularly good, with the same slightly muddy, undefined, look to them that the developers presumably now think is all part of the fun. Thankfully, however, they have realised that having time limits for the levels was an unnecessary limitation and, except for a few specific missions, you've now got all the time in the world to graze your knees and cave in your skull. This is looking, as the kids on the street say, "sick". —David Jenkins (This preview refers to the PS2 version and is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished PSone game.) Top Gun: Combat Zones
The game takes place over four real-world locations: Southeast Asia, the Russian Arctic, the Persian Gulf (no country specified), and the United States itself. The missions—30 in total—don't add up to anything story-wise, and mainly focus on targeting, weapon management, and lots and lots of jet-to-jet fighting. There's also multiplayer and an Instant Action mode, where you can play for score. Weapon management is paramount, as you only have a small load-out of missiles. You have unlimited ammo in your cannon, but it's difficult to destroy most targets with that. There are a wide range of flyable aircraft, beginning with the F-14 Tomcat and moving on to better made, more complicated, and more mission-specific craft like the Osprey, Harrier, and F-4 Phantom. All aircraft but the Tomcat are locked at the start of the game, which forces you to conquer the single-player missions to get the rest—pretty annoying given that the campaign isn't much more interesting than the Instant Action missions. But it all looks really good. The different environments—a sea of snow in the Arctic, the brown dune-seas of the Gulf, majestic purple mountains, and even realistic looking cities—all look far less bland than they sound; atmospheric effects like clouds and sunsets are breathtaking, and everything explodes very nicely. As a console system flight sim Top Gun is decent, as an action game it's above average, but it's certainly not the homage to the film that buyers might expect. Unit 13
"Unit 13" is an elite team of intelligence operatives recruited from the very best military outfits across the USA and Europe. Their ongoing mission is to infiltrate some of the most hostile regions in the world to subdue terrorists, dictators, gunrunners, traffickers and warlords. Built from the ground up for PlayStation Vita by Zipper Interactive, Unit 13 is a modern-day, third person military shooter for players on-the-go. As a member of the highly specialised military and intelligence group known as "Unit 13", players choose from one of six operatives as they attempt to complete and master 45 challenging, action-packed missions. Unit 13 introduces players to a robust set of social and competitive features through Wifi and 3G connections of the PlayStation Vita that enable them to engage and compete with friends and the wider Unit 13 community, wherever they are. Unit 13's in-game scoring and '5' star rating system provides instant feedback, driving the title's social competitive features so that any mission can become a focus of competition between players, their friends, NEAR, Regional or Global opponents. Players can choose to play Unit 13 solo, or with a friend in two-player cooperative mode via Wifi which includes full voice chat with PS Vita's built-in microphone. An in-game notification center also alerts players on status updates, Daily Challenges and rare High Value Target alerts. Unit 13 focuses on the player and the mission. Choose from six different soldier classes (Infiltrator, Sniper, Soldier, Technician, Point Man or Support) and enter the war zone to complete your key objectives. All missions are authentic and contemporary, focusing on "ripped from the headlines" scenarios that echo real events Unreal Tournament
Not only is there two, three and four-player split-screen action on the same TV, but up to eight PlayStation 2 systems can link together via the PS2's built-in FireWire port. In total, there will be between 40 and 50 maps spread across all single-player and multiplayer game modes. Some maps are identical to the game's PC predecessor, while others have been specifically designed for the new 128-bit system. The bot artificial intelligence is also impressive, especially in the simulated Capture the Flag mode. Players can also effortlessly assign orders to virtual team mates, such as "Attack", "Defend", "Hold Position", and "Cover". There are a couple of issues such as the frame rate being noticeably slower than its computer brethren in parts, especially in split-screen mode. Vampire Night
Considering it's a rare joint-venture between Namco and Sega it's shocking how little imagination has gone into Vampire Night. The only new idea here is health bars for all the baddies, and, really, that's not much of an innovation. There's a cryptful of extra game modes and secrets but that's unlikely to be much of a comfort when you complete the main game within just a few hours of opening the box. Vampire Night isn't awful by any means but it is terribly derivative; Time Crisis 2 is a much better bet if you fancy a bit of gun-game action. However, if you've already finished that game several times over and hanker for more gore, Vampire Night will doubtless fulfil all your cravings. —David Jenkins Vancouver 2010

What is curious though, is that despite being regarded by many as the best serious tennis simulation, the Virtua Tennis series has only made fleeting appearances on the current generation of consoles. It’s getting in on the ground floor with the PSP though, with what will likely become the definitive portable tennis game. The gameplay is largely the same as the previous Dreamcast and PS2 versions with an apparently simplistic arcade style control system revealing surprising depth and subtlety over time. It translates well to the PSP controls and the graphics are almost identical to the home console versions. Virtua Tennis features three basic game modes — World Tour, Exhibition and Tournament — plus four mini-games and a 16 player (although obviously not all on the same court) wireless multiplayer mode. You can create and customise your own character but 14 "real" tennis players are also included, such as Roger Federer, Venus Williams, Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova, Lleyton Hewitt, Lindsay Davenport and Tim Henman. Obviously you’ll need at least a passing interest in real tennis to really appreciate the game, but as long as that’s the case there’s no need for new balls here. — Harrison Dent Virtual Golf

Warriors, The
The Warriors film is arguably the best gang film ever made and who better to bring its gritty, claustrophobic vision to the PS2 than Rockstar, the super-developer behind the GTA series. The Warrior's story is simple: when Messianic gang warlord Cyrus decides to unite New York’s underworld into one unstoppable NYPD-stomping force, he’s killed before his plan reaches fruition. The Warriors get the blame, meaning you have to fight your way home through 60,000 extremely angry, tooled-up gang members on a remorseless quest to make you bleed. And you don't have any guns—1970s New York gangsters had ethics, thank you very much. A brawler in the classic Streets of Rage style, this is fast moving, mission based gameplay at its best. Don some dodgy '70s clothes, pick up your baseball bat, and pray you get home in one piece. The lowdown: Based on the 1979 cult movie classic of the same name, The Warriors is about street fighting. Grabbing absolutely anything you can find from meat cleavers, to baseball bats to crowbars, the violence is intense and gritty — with no guns available, the only option is to go hand-to-hand with New York’s nastiest. Most exciting moment: Get your Rage Meter high enough and unleash some imaginatively gruesome special moves, further ratcheting up the brutality in a game that’s already unnervingly violent. Since you ask: Stealing car radios and holding up convenience stores isn’t as easy as it looks. Specially created mini-games let you break into shops and cars and mug passers-by so you can save up for sweet, life-giving "Flash" — just the thing for patching up those partially battered Warriors. The bottom line: Publisher Rockstar is well used to repackaging life on the streets, but let’s hope this mirrors the excellence of Grand Theft Auto rather than the dismal pointlessness of State of Emergency. It's good fun too, moving on at a fair pace, albeit interspersed by some overly laborious cut-scenes and scripted responses that become tiring very quickly. Due to the huge number of questions in the game—over 100,000—you're also left with Anne asking things such as "Which of these is the correct answer?", rather than the more personal touch of Eidos' Who Wants To Be a Millionaire. Yet this is still undeniably strong entertainment, with some interesting options to help prolong the game's life. Oh, and multiplayer (with up to seven players supported) is a hoot. Which all means that if you're looking for a new game for the family to play, this is a stronger title than you might expect. Just don't let Anne scare you off... —Simon Brew When Vikings Attack

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire - 2nd Edition
All this adds up to make Who Wants To be a Millionaire 2 a reliable, entertaining game, ideal fodder for the family although hardly likely to satiate the cutting-edge gamer. If you enjoyed the original, though, you'll find that this latest release is money well spent. —Simon Brew Who Wants To Be A Millionaire Party Edition
The all new Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Party Edition delivers the atmosphere and tension of the hit TV series but with addition of exciting new party game features. For the first time the whole family will be able to play against each other to fight for the right to win a virtual million pounds. With legendary host Chris Tarrant calling all the shots the aim of the game, as you probably already know, is to win a million pounds. However with the addition of multiplayer party modes it will take nerves of steel as well as brains and to land the big prize. Unfortunately, the game doesn`t come with a million pounds, so instead we`re going to convert your financial winnings into points. Do you have what it takes? We`ll keep our fingers crossed. Single player: Classic Millionaire - As close as you can get to the TV show without being in the studio: one contestant; fifteen sequential questions; and a virtual million pounds to be won. Quick Fire - A fast-paced but more forgiving variant on Classic Millionaire, with questions asked against a timer but there are chances available in case you make a mistake. Multiplayer : Millionaire Party - A hectic game mode ideal for the truly competitive. Players `buzz in` to answer questions, but even if you`re not fastest on the buzzer you can always try Stealing the chance to answer, or even Double-Daring your rival if you think they don` t know the answer. You also have three second Chances if you get a question wrong. Play or Pass - A more tactical game mode which allows players to not only choose the level of question they want to answer, but also lets you pass a tricky question onto another player in the hope they will get it wrong instead of you. Millionaire Remix - Keep on your toes as you battle through a series of rounds, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
With all the fanfare, Chris Tarrant's voiceover and a plethora of questions to challenge you, it's the chance any avid quiz expert has been looking for to final put their critics to rest. Dotting all the i's and crossing all the t's, the game is an exact replica of the television show. And yes before you ask, Chris Tarrant does make sure that "It is your final answer" and that you "are sure" you've made the right choice. As in the TV game show you have the option to ask the audience, phone a friend and play the 50:50 cards, and just like the real McCoy, the audience do get it wrong and your friends don't have a clue. With multiplayer options allowing you to practice the fastest finger, head to head competition and teamwork, this game will allow you to drag the whole family into the game. Surprisingly challenging and pressure building—you can't skip the video sequences, nor Chris Tarrant's voiceovers—this game is great if you have any inclination towards the quiz genre. If you are a hardened fan of the television series then this however, will be more than your cup of tea, allowing you to finally take the seat and try and become a virtual millionaire. Winnie the Pooh: Tigger's Honey Hunt
The story in Tigger's Honey Hunt starts with Pooh, who is planning a grand party. But he can't even begin to plan the bash without knowing he has sufficient honey for his guests to enjoy. Bouncing along in his own inimitable way, Tigger pledges to help Pooh locate enough honey pots to get the party off the ground. Crisp backgrounds, colourful worlds, and superb animation make this a fun romp through the Hundred Acre Woods. Gameplay mechanics are straightforward and aimed at the right demographic. For anyone but kids, though, this game plays too short and doesn't have enough individual play modes (little kids love to play the same game over and over, so a short game doesn't matter much to the under-eight crowd). The title misses Paul Winchell's deft voice-over talent, but none the less, this doesn't spoil the experience. Tigger's Honey Hunt really knows what it wants to be—a kid's game. As such, it succeeds in providing a darned good—if short—time. —Todd Mowatt Wipeout, Pt.2: Wipeout 2097
Wipeout, Pt.4: Wip3out
Pulsating rhythms aside, Wipeout 3 offers players a wild ride through eight distinct tracks. It will take more than perpetual motion to make it to the end of each race. In order to complete each timed race, gamers are required to hit strategically placed power ups while navigating many near-impossible turns. The heart-racing action offers a tough challenge for dedicated games, but Wipeout 3 ultimately does not offer any significant improvement over earlier titles in the acclaimed series. —Brett Atwood Pros:Fast-action gameplayContemporary soundtrackCons:No significant improvement over previous Wipeout titles Wipeout, Pt.5: Wipeout Fusion

World Rally Championship 3
WRC 3 is massively enjoyable and perfectly playable. Cars will hug corners, drift out of them and then just manage to hold to the surface as they enter the next straight. In short, WRC's cars handle like real WRC cars. With the official FIA licence come real driver names, all the cars and courses from the World Rally Championship and countless small details (correct advertising, for instance). Fans of rally driving will be blown away by the game's realism, and fans of racing games will be impressed by its finely tuned gameplay. Worlds Scariest Police Chases
This may sound like a pretty odd TV programme to make a game out of but cleverly Fox Interactive have turned the whole thing into a clone of Driver 2—except without the clunky, jerky graphics. The bulk of the gameplay involves you chasing bad guys all over a massive city and repeatedly ramming into them until they stop. If you don't feel the public are put into enough danger by your driving alone you can also pull out a variety of weaponry to persuade the felons to mend their evil ways. Although there are only 20 of them all the missions are cleverly designed and there're even a few that don't involve massive amounts of auto destruction—although thankfully most do. So ignore the name and enjoy what's probably going to be one of the PS One's last great driving games. —David Jenkins Worms
Worms Armageddon
Worms Armageddon brings the humorously addictive gameplay of the very popular Worms series to the PlayStation for the first time. The strategy-based gameplay is as unique as the premise. Commanding a team of worms, players wriggle and shoot through 30 missions and 14 training levels. Players take turns moving a worm warrior into position and then firing at the opposing team, using an arsenal of weapons ranging from mines and kamikaze attacks to the more traditional exploding sheep attack and banana bombs. Naturally, the commander who best combines strategic moves with creative attacks wins the worm war. Join the throngs of fans of this unique game series and you'll never look at a grinning, gun-toting earthworm in the same way again. —Eric Twelker Worms Collection

There's plenty here to keep the average arcade racing fan happy—extra gadgets for your chosen vehicle and increased capacity engines, tyres and more are all there for the taking and all help to speed the player through the game to the point where the really groovy effects kick in. With a bike that's boosted to the hilt, hitting the turbo button produces an utterly stunning effect; the screen distorts as you hit high G and the sound goes woozy, waving in and out of phase to simulate the effect of raw speed. It's really very impressive. Add to this the novelty of the side-by-side two player mode and Extreme G3 is great fun and good value for money. —Chris Russell Zone Of The Enders
Forget the derivative sci-fi back story: Z.O.E. is all about arcade action. Pilot your oversized Mech through dozens of encounters with other automated units all out for your blood. An element of strategy is added by the arenas you fight in, a cross between Judge Dredd's Mega City 1 and Akira 's Neo Tokyo—too much collateral damage to the local citizenry or architecture and it's game over. The graphics are astonishing: laser blasts and explosions fill the screen and no matter how many enemies you face the frame rate zips along. Like a lot of Japanese conversions, the longevity of the game is questionable, but while it lasts you will experience an adrenaline-packed arcade romp But, in all honesty, a lot (a majority?) of UK gamers will be buying Z.O.E for the one-level demo of MGS2: Sons of Liberty. This is probably the most anticipated console game ever and will be a defining moment for the PS2—if the whole game lives up to the demo's promise then the wait will have been worth it. But if you have got Z.O.E. for the demo, make sure that you play the main game as well otherwise you will be missing out on an exhilarating if short-lived gaming experience. —Michael Bartley |
