1080 Snowboarding
Much of the game's appeal lies in the finely tuned player controls. As in real life, learning the basics—turning, jumping, carving—is a snap. Honing one's skills to smoothly land a jump, pull off complex in-air tricks, and negotiate tight turns and steep descents, however, is very challenging. It's this appealing combination of skill learning and track mastering that promises to entice players back to the slopes season after season. Extra kudos to the designers for the beautifully realistic sound effects—scraping along icy sections of the track is, literally, a tooth-grinding experience. —Eric Twelker Pros:One of the best snowboarding games on any platformGorgeous graphics and environmental sound effectsRealistic character and environment physicsCons:Game engine slows down in graphic-heavy sectionsOpening "locked" tracks requires advanced 'boarding skills, patience, and a love for the sport 1080° Avalanche

Blood Omen 2
Blood Omen 2 is a sequel to the okay-ish original, whose greatest claim is that it spawned two much higher quality spin-offs, in the form of Soul Reaver 1 and 2. The original Blood Omen was a top-down, 2-D, with vaguely Zelda-esque RPG action that sold pretty much on the fact that you were the baddie and could run around drinking innocent people's vital fluids. This new game has the same concept, but because everything's in 3-D it comes across as nothing more than a poor man's Soul Reaver 2. Despite the fact that there's just as much combat in this game as Soul Reaver you're saddled with a very sluggish control system, and the puzzles have been made much less interesting—90 per cent of them involve pulling switches. The game is also incredibly linear and the graphics, although quite detailed in places, suffer from bad slowdown. In short, if you're a fan of the Legacy of Kain series buy Soul Reaver 2 on PS2 instead. If you can take or leave all the vampire nonsense then Star Fox Adventures is a much better entry in the hall of 3-D adventuring fame. —David Jenkins This review refers to the PlayStation 2 version. Bloody Roar: Primal Fury
Thankfully the graphics are really rather good and the controls work surprisingly well on the GameCube's rather beat-'em-up-unfriendly controller. With a second "ultra" beast mode and a fairly wide range of moves there is, in theory, a reasonable amount of complexity to the game. In practise, though, most people will just be mashing the buttons and enjoying the ride. Whether you take Bloody Roar: Primal Fury seriously or not, though, it's undeniably fun and just the thing to keep you going until Soul Calibur II arrives. —David Jenkins Bomberman 64

A Bug's Life
An especially fun talent of Flik's is growing plants from the seed tokens he collects. When the plants return, they give him special skills like jumping, flying and invincibility. Sure to be a favourite is the cannon plant, which actually shoots Flik on to new heights. Creativity is essential in this arcade-style game: to be successful, you must think like an ant and use everything you find to help you keep moving. Even though these ants always think with a group mentality, each insect pal of Flik's has special talents they bring to the company. These circus bugs pretending to be great warriors prove to be indispensable in the ultimate battle against the grasshoppers. With outstanding Disney graphics and realistic 3-D visuals, this game has enough action to delight any arcade game lover. —Jill Lightner Bully: Scholarship Edition
Burnout
Contrary to the serious approach of racing simulators like the PS2's Gran Turismo 3, this is foot-to-the-pedal stuff, and tremendously good fun to play. And when you do put your proverbial foot down, get ready to move, for this is a blisteringly fast title that deceptively requires more concentration than it would first appear. The downside is that it won't appeal to those who like their racing games nice and serious, nor to those looking for anything particularly innovative. For Burnout has few qualms about marrying the power of the GameCube to a game engine that forsakes bells and whistles for speed, destruction and sheer good fun. Fortunately, in this case, it's all the better for it, making it a real four-wheel treat. —Simon Brew Burnout 2: Point of Impact
So what's new? There are additional locations, including a twisty road round the Rocky Mountains and an inspired airport-based level. There is also a greater choice of vehicles. Naturally enough you have to balance your need for speed against the need for good handling and take into account the weather and the kind of level you're racing across. Yet the core of Burnout 2 is still arcade-style racing and there's little else that does it better. It's incredibly accessible and an absolute blast to play. It doesn't matter whether you're competing in the enhanced single-player modes or hooking up with friends—it's completely irresistible. Visually, the game looks great and moves very, very quickly. The action is interspersed with elaborate crashes, and when you do hit something you shouldn't, you're rewarded with an action replay for your trouble. There are genuinely very few negatives here. Those who prefer their driving games flavoured with a bit more realism are going to be happier with a Gran Turismo game. Also, despite some good improvements and additions, there aren't enormous differences between this and the original Burnout. However, Burnout 2 is an exemplary piece of gaming entertainment, and a welcome antidote to the growing band of games that just take themselves far too seriously. Treat yourself. You'll be glad you did. —Simon Brew Bust A Move 3 DX

Conflict: Desert Storm II
Of course, replicating dangerously jingoistic American movies is exactly what Conflict: Desert Storm II is all about and there's a ton of new hardware in this sequel to get even the most steadfast pacifist reaching for the Arnie one-liners. You've got new phosphor grenades, a laser designator to call in helicopters and jet planes and, best of all, the chance to jump in a jeep and spray bad guys with heavy machine gun fire. As well as adding new features Conflict: Desert Storm II also fixes problems with the original game, in particular the often highly erratic frame rate, which is a lot smoother than before. The co-op mode is also back and better than ever, especially as you can now pick any level from the single-player mode to play through at any time. —David Jenkins Cool spot

The newest instalment to the world-renowned fighting game franchise, Dead Or Alive Dimensions makes its way onto the Nintendo 3DS. Dead Or Alive: Dimensions is the latest chapter in the Dead or Alive series of 3D fighting games. It is a strategic fighting game where a range of characters battle in 3D arenas, using a mix of fighting moves. This is the first time that a Dead Or Alive fighting game has been available on a portable system, and also first time on a Nintendo platform. Enjoy the complete storyline of the DOA series, with a new Chronicle Mode that retells the entire saga, with new exclusive parts of the story which solve previously unexplained mysteries. This is a 3D fighting game, which means that the two opposing characters can move into the background or the foreground with specific commands, hence turn around each other and attack from the sides and from the back; the action does not take place along a flat "2D plane". The stages where the battles take place can be interacted with. For example you can throw opponents through walls or break into new areas during the fight. The player can fight CPU or human controlled opponents in a series of matches, depleting the Life gauge of the opponent is the required condition to win each match. The range of characters include beautiful women and zany personalities. New to the Nintendo 3DS game are fully autostereoscopic 3D visuals, enhanced online functionalities, StreetPass functionalities and the possibility of executing combos by selecting them from a list on the Touch Screen. From there you move on to other venues such as DMX's Junkyard and Ludacris's Club Luda and climb the ranks to the ultimate showdown with D-Mob. The route there isn't a cakewalk, but the more battles you win, the more money you make to upgrade your fighting attributes. Victories also bring the ladies calling. They literally fight for your attention—win a fight by playing as the newest girl to approach you and you'll unlock pictures of her in your photo gallery. Action inside the ring is gritty and furious as you can lay down a multitude of moves and combinations with names like Hurtin' Unit, Spittin' Teef, Ghetto Thuggin', and Death Row Delivery, to name just a few. Momentum is key in building toward Blazin' Mode, in which you can utilise your signature move for the sure KO. In the meantime, though, there's still plenty of fun to be had in decking your opponents and watching them moan and writhe about in pain. —Larry White Defender of the Crown

As with all rhythm-action titles, the objective here is simply to keep time with the game's streamed soundtrack. Colourful visual backdrops complement perfectly the selection of pop tunes on offer. Hit the left bongo, hit the right, hit them both—clap your hands, there's a neat sensor device built into the bongo controller—and all the while enjoy non-stop celebration through the life-affirming mediums of cheesy music and eye candy. But this is not merely a pretty, lightweight game. Donkey Konga is particularly impressive because of the balance evident in its design: play well and you'll be rewarded with new credits which can then be taken to the game's shopping area, where new tracks and even new bongo sound effects can be purchased. And with four controllers, multiplayer modes for as many players can be accessed. This is a videogame musical as pure Nintendo-branded fun. —Jonti Davies Donkey Konga

ESPN International Winter Sports
The included events use clever but simple control schemes, and the basics of each event are explained with a tutorial designed to quickly teach you how to perform the necessary actions and go about the business of breaking records. For example, ski jumping involves quickly pressing two buttons and then a third to jump, the former two to extend your distance, and that third one again to land. Bobsledding mainly demands a smooth touch of the digital stick, and figure skating is a choreographed event wherein the player performs to onscreen prompts. It's amusing that a game for the fancy PlayStation 2 uses a control system based on the old-school Track & Field arcade machine, but in the past 20 years nobody has come up with a better way to simulate Olympic sport. While the controls may be dated, the graphics are unmistakably on the cutting edge. The game looks brilliant, crisp and as pure as the day after a light snow. The snow fans up when skiers turn, and the polygonal athletes have excellent facial graphics. The presentation is fantastic and so is multiplayer with a buddy. So, when Olympic fever strikes, even if the Olympics are long gone, you'll want to have a copy of Konami's ESPN International Winter Sports. —Bob Andrews Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

There's plenty here to keep the average arcade racing fan happy—extra gadgets for your chosen vehicle and increased capacity engines, tyres and more are all there for the taking and all help to speed the player through the game to the point where the really groovy effects kick in. With a bike that's boosted to the hilt, hitting the turbo button produces an utterly stunning effect; the screen distorts as you hit high G and the sound goes woozy, waving in and out of phase to simulate the effect of raw speed. It's really very impressive. Add to this the novelty of the side-by-side two player mode and Extreme G3 is great fun and good value for money. —Chris Russell EZ Flash V

FIFA 2002: 2002 FIFA World Cup
Owners of the full-fat 2002 game on PS2 will want to think very seriously before shelling out for this "special" release, but for those who've not come across the franchise before, or those looking for a break from ISS 2, this game has entertainment by the sack load. Graphically it looks the business and the pre-match build-ups are eye candy to please any jaded palate. In-game, too, the player graphics are nicely detailed and there are some wonderful individual animations covering all manner of complex-looking moves, swerves and dives. Control is nice and simple and it's a breeze to pick this title up and start booting the pigskin around the park within a couple of minutes, though mastering the finer points of ball control and the elusive "lob in" will take a good deal longer. 2002 FIFA World Cup really does have a lot going for it. It's not as technical as the ISS games, and it doesn't have the scope or gameplay modes of FIFA 2002, but it does have atmosphere by the bucket load. If you're a newcomer to the world of FIFA or you've missed the last couple of major releases then it's certainly worth a look. —Chris Russell FIFA 2003: FIFA Football 2003
EA have done their homework. The 10th year of FIFA doesn't just see the player names updated and few tweaks here and there—it's more of a mini revolution. There are two new modes of play, simulation and arcade play—one for the more tactical player who likes the fancy approach to play and the other for those more frenetic matches. As usual, vast numbers of teams and players are included (still no Oxford Utd, though—Oxford Ed); all the big name players are instantly recognisable, Edgar Davids being one fantastic example. The tons of extra features include a new European tournament and loads of DVD clips. —Laurent S Hall FIFA 2004: FIFA Football 2004
The big innovation this time round is the off-the-ball feature, and this really is a stroke of genius. It's fiddly to get to grips with, but basically when attacking, you can control a separate player as they run into space, ready to take receipt of a killer pass that splits the opposition defence open. It takes a little working at, but when it comes off, you'll be smug beyond belief. The feature itself genuinely adds an added tactical edge to a game that used to be wrongly dismissed as an arcade-style kickabout. On top of that, there are the things that FIFA does better than anyone. The presentation, audio and visuals are superb from top to bottom, and the improvements to the club management side boost the game's longevity. Most importantly of all, at the heart of all these improvements is a highly playable football game that's very easy to get into yet suitably challenging to master. And in multi-player mode, it's even better. —Simon Brew FIFA 2005: FIFA Football 2005
The rest of the game attracts the usual annual pros and cons. Its presentation is second-to-none, and for a more attacking-focused game, you need look no further. What's more, the single player mode is substantial, and very long lasting. The downside is the Pro Evolution Soccer franchise which is, and remains, the choice of the hardcore gamer. Yet that doesn't mean there's not fun to be had with FIFA 2005. Quite the contrary, in fact. Every year, FIFA can be relied on to provide an entertaining, engrossing and long-lasting football game. Thus, whilst it might be in second place, and this latest release doesn't change that, it remains a strong and worthwhile runner-up.—Simon Brew FIFA 2006: FIFA '06
It’s been a national institution for over decade now and the latest FIFA game is finally here, with lots more attacking gameplay, more customisation, more attention to detail, more online and offline multiplayer options and the deepest manager mode ever for the series. The lowdown: With Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer series snapping at its heels with ever more voracity, suddenly it’s FIFA that’s got something to prove. The answer for this year’s edition is a new emphasis on attacking play, with a suite of new tackling, dribbling and shielding controls. Naturally, it’s got all the new stats for the 05/06 season, but with the new create-a-player option you can change the facts to fit you. Also new is a 15 year career manager mode to prove your footballing skills don’t end when you’re off the pitch. Most exciting moment: Winning the treble after 15 years of hard graft in the all new career mode. Since you ask: According to cover star Wayne Rooney, the FIFA series is popular with many other premiership players, especially when travelling together for away matches. The bottom line: The best FIFA game, if not the best football game, ever. Harrison Dent FIFA 2006: FIFA '06

Iridion 3D [!C] [!M]
Your ship sometimes blocks your sight line as you shoot, and it's extremely difficult to accurately gauge distance and depth perception. Is that a small enemy that's close to your ship (maybe even about to collide with it), or is it a large one that's farther away? Are they shooting at me or are those "shots" actually distant ships? Are those enemies or part of the tunnel scenery? Another problem is the jerky control. If you're flying through a tunnel trying to kill the bad guys, you should be able to literally fly in circles. With the Game Boy Advance directional pad, squares are about all you can manage. At least the game is extremely pretty to look at. Iridion 3D boasts one of the best graphics engines available for the Game Boy Advance, and considering the competition, that's no idle compliment. Progressing through the stages and worlds one is bombarded with beautiful scenery almost as much as enemy fire. Yes, the game looks spectacular, and it will partially appease arcade shooter fans waiting for Game Boy Advance conversions of classics such as R-Type and the aforementioned coin-ops. It's just too important to see what you're doing in a game of this type to recommend the title to anyone but the most hard-core fans of the genre. —Andrew S Bub Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road Racing

James Bond Jr
James Bond: Agent Under Fire
There are enjoyable elements here though. There're a couple of Crazy Taxi-influenced levels that work well, as well as some mildly diverting "on-rails" shooter stages. At heart, though, like the N64 masterpiece GoldenEye, this is a first-person shooter and one that suffers badly in comparison with that game. There are clever gadgets to amuse yourself with, as well as frequent set pieces in the form of "Bond moves" that will delight the casual fan. But more experienced players will find the lack of depth here distressing. The real problem is the "intelligence" of the enemies. These are the dumbest bad guys you'll ever encounter in a video game. Coupled with the unerring accuracy of your auto aim, you could complete much of the game blindfolded. Consequently, it's difficult to feel much satisfaction, even upon saving the world. The developers have at least made an effort with different styles of play and a decent multiplayer mode, but Agent Under Fire is (at best) a good-ish game in a genre full of great alternatives. —Steve Colton James Bond: From Russia With Love
Even ignoring the ‘60s angle, the fact that the game is obviously trying to distance itself from the risible GoldenEye: Rogue Agent is another obvious boon. It’s a third person adventure much more in keeping with Everything or Nothing, with a similar mix of on foot and vehicle combat, with particular emphasis seeming to be given to the jetpack from Thunderball. Although Bond looks and sounds (thanks to newly recorded dialogue by the man himself) like Sean Connery the game also has a role-playing element where you can customise your character according to your preferred style of play. There’s also an online and split screen multiplayer mode for you to compare these settings with friends. Alas there doesn’t yet seem to be any sign of a mini-game allowing you to ferret out bad guys according to their incorrect choice of wine at the dinner table, but in all other respects this is shaping up to be the ultimate retro Bond game. —Harrison Dent This preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game. James Bond: GoldenEye 007
Controls are easy to master, which is impressive considering the variety of actions the onscreen hero can perform. Bond can run and walk at variable speeds, duck, pivot, hide, attach mines to enemy helicopters, block doors from opening, and more. The optional auto-aim feature is especially nice. Of course, James Bond is proficient in a wide variety of weapons. You get to use them all, from the trusty Walther PPK (with silencer) to double sets of full-auto machine guns. The game's faithful tribute to the Bond legacy includes briefing dossiers on each mission, complete with wisecracks from Q and flirtatious comments from Miss Moneypenny. And the 3-D representation of locations and characters from the movie is very impressive. One of the distinguishing features of the game is the outstanding artificial intelligence of the enemies. When attacked, squads will rush to hit the alarm. If they make it, reinforcements come running. Enemy soldiers respond to being shot or blown up with chilling realism. According to Rareware, there are over 30 different animation routines that come into play, depending on where the soldier is hit. For those who prefer the challenge of human opponents, there are six clever multiplayer modes where up to four players can shoot it out, as teams or solo agents. With excellent gameplay, intelligence, and style, GoldenEye 007 is a first-person shooter that'll keep you coming back for more. —Jeanne Uy Pros:Built-in save capability for up to four playersAuto-aim feature helps novice players feel like a sharpshooterRich, complex gameworld filled with detail and varietyGreat bonus missionsCons:Sometimes cinematic scenes for fulfilling mission objectives are a bit anticlimactic James Bond: Goldeneye 007 - Collector's Edition
Bond is back and so too is the most influential first person shooter in console history. Years before Halo, GoldenEye on the Nintendo 64 was the multiplayer game of the age. Many games since have tried to emulate it but until now it's never had an official update. Although the basic design of the original game is maintained this is no straight remake, with every element of the design and graphics revamped and improved for the modern age - with a new cast including Daniel Craig as Bond. With plenty of surprises for even the most avid fan of the original this still manages to retain the unique mix of action, stealth and world-beating design. Of course GoldenEye wouldn't be GoldenEye without its multiplayer mode, with the classic four-player splitscreen mode back and playing better than ever. For the first time though there's also an eight-player online option, for the ultimate Bond experience. Dr Yes: The best Bond game ever, and one of the most beloved first person shooters of all time, returns with a whole new makeover and mountains of new features.Thunderball: The ground-breaking single-player mode returns in a way you've never seen before, with new story elements, new moves, and some of the best graphics on the Wii.Screen Giants: The classic four-player splitscreen multiplayer returns with all your favourite, levels, weapons and classic Bond villains such as Odd Job and Jaws.Golden Gun: Use the controller of your choice from a Wii remote to a Wii Zapper, Classic Controller, GameCube joypad or even the limited edition Golden Classic Controller Pro.Hollywood Talent: Daniel Craig takes the role of Bond, with Judi Dench as M. Plus the original film's script writer Bruce Feirstein is back to update the story for 2010. James Bond: GoldenEye: Rogue Agent [CIB]
The choice of name is all the more puzzling because the game has nothing to do with the film or, save the first person perspective, Rare's magnum opus. In fact the rather unlikely reasoning behind everything is that you are an evil ex-MI6 agent who after a fight with Dr No is given an, err… golden eye by Auric Goldfinger. The game's premise is such that all of Bond's greatest bad guys are still alive and caught up in a sort of underworld civil war, in which your character seeks to be the real beneficiary. Ignoring such nonsense though, and looking purely at the game, the AI seems quite good and the replacement of Everything or Nothing's "Bond Moments" with scripted "Death Trap" sequences is fairly amusing. Unfortunately though the developers seem to have forgotten that the original game was as much lauded (at least a year before Thief or Metal Gear Solid) for its stealth gameplay as much for its shooting and this element seems total absent from Rogue Agent. The multiplayer is also unconvincing with no radar and rather sprawling level design. It might turn out all right when it's finished but at the end of the day this is no GoldenEye. — David Jenkins James Bond: The World Is Not Enough
As you might expect you play the part of 007, and the action is viewed from a first-person perspective. As each levels begins you are given a set of objectives by M and these have to be completed before you can proceed. These tasks mainly involve shooting as many bad guys as possible with a variety of satisfyingly chunky weaponry, but there are also skiing, driving, gambling (one of the most fun) and stealth levels. With the latter utilising some neat gadgetry provided by John Cleese's R (the only actor from the film actually voicing his character in the game). The game follows the plot of the film very closely, with 10 levels being linked by extensive movie footage. An experienced gamer will not have too many problems finishing TWINE in a few hours, and the extensive violence makes this game unsuitable for younger players, but most James Bond fans will find much to entertain them in this diverting romp. —Michael Bartley Jeremy McGrath Supercross World

Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
The developers have, as with the enjoyable Two Towers tie-in, opted for a beat-'em-up in the style of old classics such as Golden Axe. It proves to be a wise choice. Seamlessly incorporating some of the finest cinematic moments from the film, the game is a frenetic, rip-roaring and hugely entertaining affair. And surprisingly, it's a well-thought-through and highly challenging one too. The gameplay rewards the player willing to try things other than the same old moves, and through a series of combos and upgrades, it constantly pushes you onward. It's no one-weekend wonder either, with a healthy long-term challenge packed in. Downers? A couple of levels don't quite reach the standards set by the game's best, and the toughness of the challenge may also deter more casual gamers. They'd be really missing out though, for not only is Return of the King one of the best movie tie-ins of recent times—certainly eclipsing the aforementioned Two Towers title—it's a tremendously enjoyable game in its own right. It's just a shame now that EA have run out of films and books, as we'd happily thirst for another instalment 12 months down the line. Mario Kart (with Wii Wheel)

Mario Kart 64
Placing a familiar Nintendo personality behind the wheel of a sputtering kart powered by a 50, 100, or 150 cc engine, the game lets players race up to four of Nintendo's lovable characters on a variety of well-designed tracks. Because karts lack the power and speed of race cars, drivers must focus on collecting power-ups and non-lethal weapons rather than negotiating hairpin turns on two wheels. Grabbing and using on-track items is the heart of the game's fun: a strategically placed banana peel sends the unlucky victim into a spin, nailing an opponent with a turtle shell launches their vehicle skyward and a rocket provides a quick boost to near-breakneck speeds, if only for a moment. The multiplayer mode provides enormously chaotic fun for up to four players—flip it on at a party and watch the guests congregate around the screen. —Eric Twelker Mario Kart: Double Dash!
Thankfully, Double Dash!! has got everything right—indeed this is probably the best first-party sequel so far for the GameCube: the graphics are excellent, the power-ups are more insane than ever and most importantly the handling of the karts is excellent, with the powerslide of the SNES original all-important once more. The big new gimmick for Double Dash!! is the fact that there are customised karts for you to drive, all of which can seat two characters. This ensures a surprising amount of tactical depth as you can switch the characters around mid-race in order to access each one's unique special weapons. As ever with Nintendo games, the gameplay is perfectly balanced so that the use of power-ups never overshadows the need to be a skilful driver. Indeed, the improved AI of the computer players is immediately noticeable as they move around the tracks in a highly intelligent manner, moving out of your way and blocking you off when necessary. Of course the real draw with any Mario Kart game is the multi-player mode and this is as insanely enjoyable as ever in either race or battle mode. Indeed it's better than ever as you can now have up to 16 people playing at one time if you link up your GameCubes using broadband adapters. —David Jenkins Mario Party 5

Medal of Honor: Rising Sun
In truth, the formula hasn't moved on much for the franchise, but then it does work spectacularly well. The game's various missions are varied, and they demand elements of stealth, action and a bit of sabotage along the way. And they're not afraid to pull the proverbial rug from underneath to keep you on your toes. As ever, the multimedia elements border on spectacular. The musical scores of Medal of Honor games are rarely given the credit they deserve, but their contribution really can't be understated. The cinematic visuals, however, do tend to hog the headlines, and it's easy to see why. As you fight to complete a mission with explosions going off all around you there's little time to notice them. A couple of mild criticisms, then. There isn't much scope to deviate from the set path through the game, which is very tightly scripted. Not a bad thing, but not something that will appeal to everyone. Plus it would be nice to see a few more risks taken with the Medal of Honor formula. These mild grumbles aside, Medal of Honor: Rising Sun is simply a very good video game. It's tense, gripping and desperately addictive. And when you ultimately see the end game sequence, you really will be thirsting for more. —Simon Brew Mensa Academy

Minority Report
Unfortunately, you are unlikely to find much to enjoy in Minority Report, even if you liked the film. The elements that made the movie worthwhile—a compelling narrative wrapped up with a high-tech, futuristic bow—are glossed over or absent from the game. What's more, the gameplay is as redundant and simplistic as the graphics are uneven. Worse yet, the game does not allow you to save mid-level (some levels are long), and the instruction manual contains no information about how to play the game, forcing you to play through the training course. Minority Report does successfully represent some parts of the movie, such as the concussion gun, the jet pack and the spider bots. The first time you fire the concussion gun, for example, you'll be impressed with the way the space around Anderton ripples with the force of the weapon. Otherwise, the game levels are unimpressive and character animation is poor. Minority Report is not great at recreating the movie, and is even less successful when it breaks with it. —Bill Hummel Mission Impossible

Namco Museum
Like the PlayStation and N64 versions, Namco has packed a few of its best games onto the cartridge. The GBA gets five titles—Ms Pac-Man, Galaga, Pole Position, and Dig Dug are listed on the front of the box, and Galaxian is also included—all lovingly converted, complete with all the music and sound effects intact. What we don't get, unfortunately, is the amusing Museum portion and trivia found on other versions. Ms Pac-Man and Galaga are the real winners here. Both are perfect renditions complete with spot-on controls and all the extras (music, colours, sound effects and bonus stages/cartoons). There are even two versions of Ms Pac-Man—one that shows the whole maze but is dreadfully small, and another that scrolls. Pole Position is amusing, but features twitchy controls and pales in comparison to other GBA racing games. Galaxian, on the surface, seems the same as its sequel, Galaga, but it isn't. The fire rate is much slower, so the pace of the game is different. Galaga is certainly better, but Galaxian is a nice addition regardless. Dig Dug is a classic, pure and simple, and it still plays well. It rounds out the collection nicely. Arcade fans, especially those who used to line up (or line their 10p pieces on the machine) to play these games, will be very pleased with Namco Museum. Those unimpressed with retro gaming probably won't be converted. However, here's hoping we see more arcade classics in the future, because there surely isn't a better platform for them now than the Game Boy Advance. —Andrew S Bub Naruto: Clash of Ninja

New Super Mario Bros.
It’s been over fifteen years since the last Super Mario Bros. but finally Mario is back in a proper 2D platforming adventure. Just because it’s old school though doesn’t mean it’s old hat... The lowdown: Considering the last Super Mario Bros. game is still the best selling video game of all time (17.28 million copies and counting) this has a lot to live up to, but it almost effortlessly captures the action and charm of the old games. The basics of the game are the same as always as you run and jump through mostly horizontally scrolling levels. New to the game are power-ups that turn Mario into a giant or make him really tiny, as well as one that gives him a Koopa shell on his back to attack enemies with. Although the gameplay is all in two dimensions the graphics are 3D, with all new moves such as the triple jump and wall jump added in as well. Most exciting moment: As well as the single player mode there’s also a wireless multiplayer mode where you get to battle a friend (as Luigi) across a whole bunch of specially designed levels. Since you ask: As Super Mario World on the SNES (since re-released as Super Mario Advance 2 on the GBA) was subtitled Super Mario Bros. 4 in Japan that name couldn’t be used for this new game, although that’s secretly whatever everyone’s calling it – behind Nintendo’s back. The bottom line: The impossible has happened: Nintendo have created a worthy follow-up to Super Mario Bros. 3! Harrison Dent New Tetris, The

NHL 2003 plays fantastically and is one of the finest sports games to grace TV screens anywhere; the presentation is top notch and most of the stats are up-to-date (although yet again many of the minor international squads still have imaginary players). But the new tweaks aren't really enough to justify shelling out full price if you already own last year's version—a lesson we hoped EA had learnt after finally getting FIFA right this time. If you're a NHL completist or a hockey fan, or have never played NHL before, then we recommend this game over any other. Wii U is getting its own Wii Sports-style title in the form of NintendoLand. Reggie Fils-Aime announced the title during the platform holder's E3 press conference, claiming that NintendoLand will have the same effect as the Wii's launch title - it will make the new controller easier to understand for newcomers. The game is set in a Nintendo theme park, where players control their Miis and engage in mini-games based on one of 12 rides. Confirmed rides included Legend of Zelda: Battle QuestAnimal Crossing: Sweet DaysLuigi's Ghost MansionDonkey Kong Crash CourseTakamaru's Ninja Castle Luigi's Ghost Mansion, for example, is a Pac-Man style maze in which the GamePad user can control the ghosts while players using Wii Remotes control their Miis. The rides will all feature multiplayer support and some will be compatible with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. The project is being overseen by Katsuya Eguchi, who has worked on Animal Crossing, Wii Music and Wii Sports Resort. Nintendo Presents: Style Boutique

Available in four colours - white, black, pink and blue, the Wii Remote Plus has the same physical dimensions of the standard Wii Remote and all compatible peripherals can be plugged into the base of the Wii Remote Plus as before, such as the Nunchuk or Classic Controller. Functioning in exactly the same way as the Wii Remote with Wii Motion Plus connected together, the Wii Remote Plus enables players to see every twist of the wrist or arm, brought to life and faithfully replicated on the TV screen with the use of one, compact controller. Players of games such Wii Sports Resort and FlingSmash will be able to take full advantage of the enhanced accuracy and realistic motion control which the Wii Remote Plus offers, as every swing of a golf club or fling of Zip is reflected in real time on screen. Nintendo's Wii U is a new console that includes a controller with a 6.2-inch screen. Adding a second screen to the living room creates a multitude of new video game experiences while offering families a variety of options to customize their entertainment. Previously, video games played on a home console have been confined to the TV and offered identical viewpoints to each player in a multiplayer environment. Furthermore, watching TV and playing console games have been completely separate experiences. The new controller removes these boundaries, creating a more dynamic and fluid gaming and entertainment experience. The type of gaming experiences made possible by Wii U and the new controller include: In single-player games: The new controller can display information on its screen that does not appear on the TV. The information and viewpoint can also change in the new controller based on the orientation of its gyroscope. In multiplayer games: Nintendo Yellow Game Boy Camera

The entirely inconsequential plot forces you to guide the svelte Vanessa through umpteen levels of third person combat. After viewing the intro sequence, where V gracefully jumps and twists between enemy bullets, you assume the control system is going to be all about fluid movement and balletic combos. In actual fact it's a rather clunky system that refuses to let you fire while moving and is actually somewhat reminiscent of Resident Evil's. After a while you get used to it and can start enjoying the game, which is broken up into a number of small rooms where you must destroy a series of extremely dim but nevertheless deadly robots. Throughout all this the graphics are extremely well designed, if ultimately rather repetitive—a statement that could be applied to the game in general if you're so inclined. If you enjoy your old-school arcade action though, this soon becomes addictive and is a welcome alternative to the legion of sequels and clones currently clogging up the charts. —David Jenkins Pac Pix
Pac-Man and The Ghostly Adventures HD
Pac-man Collection
Pac-Man plays just like you remember, and like Namco Museum's picture-perfect re-creation of Ms Pac-Man, it features spot-on control, graphics, cartoon cut-scenes, sound effects and, best of all, music from the coin-op (who can forget that opening theme?). As such, it's easily the best of this collection. PacMania 3D is basically a 3-D version of the original, and is just about as uninspired now as when it came out. Pac-Attack is a cool variation on such puzzlers as Tetris and Columns, and as such it's perfect for handheld gaming. Pac-Man Arrangement is an odd little game that plays much like the original but adds weird power-ups that, for example, make you gigantic. Because Pac-Man Collection contains perfect replicas, there isn't much to gripe about, save that Ms Pac-Man is a far better game than the original, and you'll have to shell out for Namco Museum if you want that one. But if you're a retro gamer on the go who also want to track down ghosts and eat power pills, this package is sure to satisfy your appetite. —Andrew S Bub Paperboy
Perfect Dark
Perfect Dark features Dolby surround sound, widescreen compatibility, and—as expected—stunning special effects, including dynamic lighting, chest-thumping explosions and realistic smoke, dust and steam clouds. Characters are lifelike thanks to motion-captured animations and beautifully rendered 3-D models. Perfect Dark's multiplayer features are impressive. As in GoldenEye 007, up to four players can deathmatch in up to 20 different arenas. But that's just the start of the fun. The inclusion of up to eight computer-controlled opponents ("bots") adds an original component to the frag-fest. Humans can team with or against bots and even command a bot teammate to target specific opponents. Numerous original games, such as King of the Hill, offer so many variations that you just might forget that an engrossing single-player experience lies at the heart of the game. Special note: The gameplay and graphics are greatly enhanced with the extra memory boost provided by the N64 Expansion Pak. The main single-player missions and multiplayer enhancements (three- or four-player games, as opposed to two-player games without the Pak, and other options) are only available with the N64 Expansion Pak (not included). —Eric Twelker Peter Jackson's... If you do well in the main game you can even win new clothes and accessories for your virtual golfer to wear. Pikmin
Learning when and how to make the best use of your Pikmin's skills and traits is the essence of the game. You can control up to 100 Pikmin at a time while figuring out which are best suited for a particular task. Some are better fighters, while others can survive in water or handle explosive bomb rocks. However, even the best Pikmin herder will have to sacrifice a few of the plant-headed beasts for the greater good. It's this constant need to refine and create strategies to minimise losses that makes Pikmin challenging and always fun. For a first generation GameCube title, the graphics, sounds, and music are fantastic and show an awesome amount of detail. Though it's no Pokémon, this game should an appeal to wide-eyed younger gamers as well as seasoned veterans. The controls are intuitive and feel perfect for the standard GameCube controller; however, learning to position the camera can be a tad frustrating during some of the more tense moments, as it has only a few magnification levels and needs constant adjustment. The biggest obstacle you face is time; you have only 30 days (each day is about 15 minutes in real time) in which to find the necessary parts. While this keeps the pace of the game up, some may find such limits to be somewhat frustrating, as it means there will be a lot of repetition and rethinking of strategy. It also means that diligent gamers may find Pikmin to be rather a short game. At the end of your gaming day, though, Pikmin is one of the best games the GameCube will have for quite some time. —Mark Brooks Pikmin

Rayman steps back into the limelight as he's brought in to protect the world from evil alien… rabbits? One of gaming's most beloved platform stars returns in a mini-game collection that makes Wario Ware seem sane. The lowdown: Apart from Mario, most other attempts from platform heroes to branch out into other genres has usually ended up in abject failure. Overseen by the series' creator though this features 80 of the weirdest party games ever conceived, including hammer throwing with cows and squirting rabbids with water to keep the door shut on them while they're in the toilet. Not all of the games are as short and simple as that though as this also includes various racing missions, a fully fledge flight game and ten different first person shoot 'em-up levels. Although each mini-game is introduced with a frequently amusing cut scene there's also a fully fleshed out multiplayer mode for most of them, including the shoot 'em-up levels where you get to play as either Rayman or one of the Rabbids. Most exciting moment: Whenever you complete a game in the story mode you can replay it any time via the replay mode. When playing the game like this you also get to dress Rayman up in an unlikely range of clothing, from afro wig to flared jeans and winged collars. It's not just for show either as it increases the likelihood you'll get a love letter from the Rabbids in the audience of each game! Since you ask: The Rayman series was created by Michel Ancel, France's most celebrated game designer. As well as the first two Rayman games he was also responsible for Tonic Trouble, the award winning Beyond Good & Evil and celebrated movie tie-in Peter Jackson's King Kong. Red Steel
An engaging storyline unfolds as you learn that your fiance has been kidnapped and her father a Japanese mafia kingpin murdered by a rival gang. The only way to save your loved one and defend your honor is to journey from Los Angeles to Japan and confront the Tokyo underworld. By learning the ancient art of Japanese fighting with your katana and the focused precision of modern firearms, you will progress and adapt yourself to this foreign environment, where skills alone may not guarantee you victory. Red Steel is the only original first-person action game built from the ground up for the WiiTake full advantage of the Wii controller, and control the action like never before. You`ll replicate sword-fighting movements and eliminate enemies quickly by directly targeting and shooting themExecute deadly combo moves using multiple swords or choose from a variety of firearms for longer-range attacksLearn to harness your mental power to unleash powerful attacks in dire situations, and use the focus system to freeze time and effectively target several enemies at onceLearn the art of Japanese fighting, and then use these skills to take out your enemies or gain their respect and loyalty by sparing themChallenge friends with various split-screen multiplayer modes to see who the real master is. Red Steel 2
Forget everything you know of the original Red Steel and prepare for the most innovative first person shooter ever on the Wii. Although this long-awaited sequel features the same mix of gunplay and sword-fighting the art style and story are completely different. Known only as The Swordsman, you enter the fictional city of Caldera looking for revenge in a unique mix of Wild West atmosphere, samurai action and modern day technology. The first shoot 'em-up to use the Wii MotionPlus accessory, the game gives you unprecedented control of your weapons and movement at all times. The ultra accurate controls allow you to deflect bullets with you sword and perform all sorts of moves from simple slashes and thrusts to a 360 degree spinning counter attack. Unlike the first game you can switch between guns and sword whenever you want, giving you total control at all times and creating one of the Wii's most cutting edge new action games. Key Features All change: Clint Eastwood meets Kill Bill in an audacious reimagining of the original first person shooter as a post-apocalyptic Wild West revenge story.Weapon of choice: Take down bad guys however you want, as you switch between using a samurai sword and a range of pistols, shotguns and other weapons. Precision blade: As the first action game to use the Wii MotionPlus accessory enjoy a level of control and accuracy impossible on any other system. Novel graphics: Impressive new cel-shaded graphics may look like a comic book but the violence and danger is as real as ever. User settings: Fully customisable controls allow you to change every element, from the button assignments to the exact sensitivity of the Wii remote. Rescue: The Embassy Mission
Resident Evil
Although films and music are forever being remade, remixed and generally reheated, games never seem to get the same treatment. Resident Evil is bucking that trend, though, and is back with almost another game's worth of extra rooms and puzzles and what are arguably the best graphics ever seen in a video game—we're talking near-photo-realistic characters and a subtle use of light and shadow as has never been seen before. Ignoring the stodgy control system and incongruous puzzles, the genius of Resident Evil is that you genuinely don't know what'll happen next. Just deciding whether to risk opening a door can be a fearsome and suspenseful experience. The fact that you can only hold half a dozen items at any one time forces you to plan what you're going to do in far more detail than any other action game, deciding which monsters you can afford to shoot and where you can run to if things go pear-shaped. In short, if you're a Resi fan this revamp will be like manna from heaven; if you've yet to experience its dubious delights, you'd better break out the brown trousers right away. —David Jenkins Roadsters

Featuring a roster of outrageous extrovert characters, each with their own unique style, SEGA Presents Touch Darts has someone for everyone and mini-games for all, with a healthy dash of artistic license thrown in for good measure. Sega Soccer Slam
The game is similar in style to Virtua Tennis in concept, though a lot less serious. Modes of play are standard: Arcade, Tournament, Quest etc; play out the Quest mode and the similarity to the aforementioned tennis title is clear. You select one of 6 pre-set teams based on continent and elemental power. Fire, water, toxic, spirit, electric and ice form the special powers that each team can unleash on the pitch. Teams are taken on in a round-robin style league with a special challenge offered to you after each match. The challenges are fun and in the style of Virtua Tennis; complete each one and you'll be given cash to spend in the obligatory shop, where you can purchase kit upgrades, new grounds, game artwork and more. Win the leagues and you'll be able to unlock extra hidden teams. Other game modes allow you to create a personalised super team and unlock more characters. The game's graphics are excellent and each player is instantly recognizable with great animations and detail. The stadia are well animated and the sound effects are vibrant. The game oozes Sega quality. All in all, Sega Soccer Slam is ideal for those less serious sessions and for pick-up-and-play gaming. —Laurent S Hall Sensible Soccer

Shrek 2
Shrek 2
At its core the game is a sort of scrolling beat-'em-up, interspersed with numerous little puzzles to overcome as you try to navigate the various fairytale realms. What makes things a lot more interesting is that you actually manage a team of four characters at a time, taking control of one at a time and having the other three follow along behind. The defaults include Shrek, Fiona and Donkey, but you also get to use Gingerbread Man, Lil' Red, Puss in Boots and The Big Bad Wolf. The best bit is that if you can get three friends to help, then one person can actually control a character each, which really livens things up. But even in single player mode any of the characters can get a chance to take part in a "Hero Time" mini-game that provides a enjoyable respite from the main game as you take a ride on a dragon with Donkey or indulge in a singalong with Fiona. Although the graphics are impressive (much more so than the sound, which doesn't feature the original movie cast), the main gameplay can get a bit monotonous. But for Shrek fans and general young 'uns there's more to enjoy here than with most film licenses. —David Jenkins Shrek: Super Slam

Sonic Advance [!C] [!M]
The real star here is the game's link capabilities. The Chao Garden allows you to raise your little critters and upload them to the GameCube via the link cable and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. Having one cartridge allows up to four GBA players to compete in one mini-game; there are also two additional mini-games that can be played if each player owns a cartridge. Although the single-player game is quite good, the link options give the title tremendous value. The only notable problem stems from the series itself: there are still entirely too many cheap deaths that are a result of the title's high-speed gameplay. You'll find yourself zipping along a level only to be hit by an obstacle you had little chance of seeing, let alone avoiding. Ultimately, the only way to get past these hazards is to memorise where they are. This minor flaw doesn't detract from the game's excellent value, though. Sonic Advance offers a very good single-player game and some of the best link options of any GBA title. —Raymond M Padilla Sonic and the Black Knight
Sonic Mega Collection
As with all retro collections of this sort, Sonic Mega Collection caters not only for new and curious gamers but also for hardcore fans. Features such as artwork folders and commercials, for example, will appease the latter group, while the games included here will satisfy the retro longings of all. To be precise, full versions of the following are immediately playable: Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, and 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic Spinball, Sonic 3D and Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Collection. And that's just for starters; continued play unlocks other Sonic-related games, such as Flicky and Ristar. Value for money, then, isn't in question. All that remains to be debated is whether or not these titles continue to entertain in the 21st century. Generally, they do. The few duds in this collection (the overbaked Sonic 3, for instance) are far outweighed by the ever-enjoyable likes of the original Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. While Sonic's importance today is far less significant than it was, Sonic Mega Collection is a timely reminder of the excellent qualities of the series. —Johnny Cornelius Sorcerer's Apprentice, The
Soul Calibur II
SoulCalibur's brilliance is not due to any particularly innovative features—it could legitimately be described as simply Tekken with weapons. It's just that it does everything with more panache and imagination than the rest. Instead of awkward, staccato moves, SoulCalibur offers gloriously flowing, instinctive combos that often leaves you gasping at your own character's athleticism. Of course beat-'em-ups aren't known for their innovation and SoulCalibur II doesn't really deviate too far from its original premise of 16th century men and women hitting each other with a variety of swords, sticks and other meleé weapons. The whole tactical nature of the battles has been altered, though, to create a deeper game with blocks and counters now far more important and the glorious new animation system able to adapt each move depending on the direction and speed you're moving in. One point of true innovation in the original game was its unusually complex and rewarding single-player mode and this has been expanded for the sequel as you compete under a variety of different conditions to earn money and buy new weapons, costumes and extras. As an extra bonus to GameCube owners (the original arcade hardware uses Nintendo technology), Link from The Legend of Zelda is a playable character in this GameCube version. —David Jenkins Soul Calibur Legends

Spider-Man 2
As you'd expect, the new game works along the same basic lines as the last one but is actually a very noble attempt to completely expand the concept and the way it's implemented. The biggest change is the that the game is now much more free-form, rather than being strictly mission based, and you can swing around New York City all you like, getting involved in side quests (such as stopping minor robberies) before getting around to the wider plot. The actual business of web-slinging has been greatly improved so that your webbing now actually connects with buildings, instead of just attaching to thin air, and so the whole business of getting around the city becomes more "realistic". The combat system has also been completely overhauled, although it's still fair to say that the interior levels are far less entertaining than bouncing around New York and getting involved in aerial scraps. The game realises this though and the majority of the action now takes place outside as you not only follow the plot of the movie, taking on main bad guy Dr Octopus, but also tackling some of Spidey's other villains from the comic books, including the Vulture, Rhino and Shocker—as well as meeting alternative love interest Black Cat. Hopefully someday all comic book games will be this good.—David Jenkins Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions

Spider-Man: The Movie
The game parallels the motion picture's storyline, steering you through a progression of challenges that begin with the hunt for Uncle Ben's murderer, and ends with a final showdown with the Green Goblin. You begin as Peter Parker dressed in his wrestling costume and must defeat a variety of thugs throughout each level before advancing to the next set of challenges. The game gets progressively tougher as you encounter in turn Shocker, the Vulture, Scorpion, and, of course, the Green Goblin. Visually, Spider-Man is a treat: cityscapes unfold in realistic detail and are enhanced by sunlight shining between buildings; cut scenes offer seamless animation; interiors are painstakingly recreated; and Spider-Man and his enemies are well rendered, moving about the screen in clean fashion. As an added bonus, most characters are voiced by their movie counterparts, and the training mode features the sarcastic wit of Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell. —Larry White Pros:Detailed controls bring Spider-Man to lifeChallenging gameplay enhanced by numerous fight stylesStunning visuals at every levelCons:Camera angles slow to respond at timesSome interiors too darkRepetitive one-liners Spongebob Squarepants & Friends : Unite!

Spy Hunter
The original Spy Hunter was a vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up from the early 80s that was inspired by the Lotus Esprit sequence from The Spy Who Loved Me. This sequel manages to update all the elements of the original in superb 3-D graphics-o-vision yet still maintains the same manic arcade spirit. The basic gameplay involves you driving your gadget-stuffed spy car (which can also transform into a boat) through one of 14 different courses attempting to complete a variety of different goals, such as blowing up prototype helicopters and defusing bombs. You only have to complete one goal to exit the course, but completing additional goals is the only way to access subsequent levels. Spy Hunter is unquestionably the best marriage of a driving game and shoot-'em-up ever—and considering how many games have attempted this in the past that's no small compliment. Star Wars, Episode I: Racer
Racer differs from a normal racing game. Rather than merely steering your way around the track, you can enhance your turns by using the Z button on the controller. Holding down the button shifts the cockpit off to the side and kicks you sideways with a burst of extra speed. And, of course, a big part of pod racing is the spectacular crashes, and here LucasArts does not disappoint. As Qui-Gon says, "Pod racing is very dangerous!" Even your opponents crash—sometimes into each other. The 3-D visuals and sound are good, but not ground-breaking. To forestall the inevitable boredom that all racing games eventually leave you with, the game lets you race on different planets, each with their own tracks. The tracks are inventive, especially in the later levels: some tracks have shortcuts to discover, others have zero-gravity sections and hair-raising jumps. The racing pods also differ, and with victory in certain races, more powerful craft become available. A pit area allows you to view all the weird designs up close in 3-D. In tournament mode, prize money is awarded for top finishers; you can use the cash to buy parts to upgrade your pod. It's a good thing the purse isn't paid out in Republic credits: Star Wars fans will recognise the parts dealer as none other than Watto. His wry comments spice up the shopping experience, and he sounds just like he did in the movie. There are also some secret ships, such as the sleek Naboo Starfighter from Star Wars: Episode I, The Phantom Menace, a TIE interceptor, and a 78 Buick. The flight simulation in this game is first-rate. You'll find yourself leaning to the side as you pull a high-G turn in pursuit of Imperial TIE fighters. And the outstanding graphics and sounds are realistic enough to transport you to the Star Wars universe. Every detail is in place, right down to the individual Stormtroopers you can see running around (and trying to shoot you). One of the more impressive sequences lets you bring down Imperial Walkers by using the tow cables on your snowspeeder. Nice touch. This is a single-player game, but you start each mission with a few wingmen from your squadron, and the well-done spoken dialogue between pilots and commanders really makes you feel like part of a team. The only significant shortcoming is the lack of a cooperative multiplayer option. With its excellent gameplay, varied environments and interesting missions, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is sure to become a long-time favourite. —Eric Fredrickson Pros:Faithful to lots of Star Wars detailsSatisfying flight action, explosions, sound effectsInteresting missions and plotSee—and fight over—the Spice mines of Kessel and other famous Star Wars planetsCons:For some reason, you can only fly clockwise when bringing down a WalkerNo easy setting for those without The ForceVoices of Luke, Wedge and Han don't sound like the real thing Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III - Rebel Strike
When flying a speeder bike through the forests of Endor the sensation of being there, and being there at great speed, is just phenomenal. Likewise, stomping around in a scout walker blowing up stormtroopers and getting Ewoks to set traps is just as exhilarating. Unfortunately a number of sections where you have to walk around on foot are fairly appalling, with some of the later platform based mission with Luke Skywalker being particularly risible. In fact, in terms of the single-player mode Rebel Strike is a considerable step down from its predecessor in terms of enjoyment. So it's a relief then that the multi-player modes are so well stocked and enjoyable. There's a cooperative mode that allows you to replay every level from the GameCube's first Rogue Squadron game, but with a friend. Barrelling down a photo-realistic Death Star trench with a wingman is worth the price of admission alone and will have even the most cynical fan heaving with excitement—even more so when they find that there are a bunch of special deathmatch and capture-the-flag levels to play as well. Rebel Strike is very much a game of two halves, but if you can play it with a friend it's got a lot to offer. —David Jenkins Star Wars: Shadows Of The Empire

The premise of the game is that Mario's tropical holiday is ruined when he's stitched up by an evil lookalike for daubing graffiti all over the island. Rather conveniently there's an extremely useful water pump waiting for him to use, which not only washes away the mess but also doubles as a handy jet pack. The jet pack aspect means that whenever you fall off something you have the chance to immediately recover yourself; this built-in safety net means the game can afford to be far more ambitious in its level designs than ever before, with massive levels filled with trampolines, tightropes, water-powered windmills, huge coral reefs and mountains and mountains of platforms. The whole thing looks amazing, too, with the most realistic water ever seen in a video game and a near infinite draw distance. And that's without evening mentioning the rideable, fruit juice-spewing Yoshis, the extra water nozzles, the super-hardcore platform levels where Shadow Mario nicks your jet pack, or the goop-generating bosses who seem to live to make Princess Peach's laundry a nightmare. After the sweet but rather short pleasures of Luigi's Mansion and Pikmin, you need have no fear that Mario Sunshine is of a similarly brief nature. There are a total of 120 shines to collect—the same number of stars as in Super Mario 64—and the game world is at least as large and far more interactive. This is without question the best game on the GameCube yet; that may be no more than you'd expect from a Mario game, but it's certainly more than most of us mere mortals deserve. —David Jenkins Super Mario World

Super Monkey Ball
Ironically, the Gamecube's best launch game is also its least impressive graphically. It's not ugly, by any means, but the graphics are mostly purely functional and subservient to the gameplay. It may sound simple and repetitive but Super Monkey Ball is pretty much the dictionary definition of addictive, perfectly balancing the intense frustration at failing to complete a course with the absolute desire to have "just one more go". To make matters worse the later courses are so fiendishly difficult it' s as if Beelzebub himself has risen up from hell and designed a puzzle game. The single player mode is maddeningly addictive, but it's the four-player larks, either on the standard puzzle courses or through a bunch of wacky mini-games including monkey bowling and monkey fight, that mark Super Monkey Ball as a true gaming classic. Its lack of showy graphics may unfairly limit it to cult status—just make sure you're part of the cult.—David Jenkins Super Monkey Ball 2 [CIB]

Tetris
Tetris DS
The game that launched 150 million Game Boys is back with the first Nintendo-developed Tetris title in eight years, featuring six different game modes and a ten player multiplayer option. The lowdown: With a game that’s been around as long and with as many versions as Tetris it’s obviously difficult to think of what else to do with it. Nintendo’s answer is to fill the game with as many different game modes as possible, including completely new concepts like Push, where both players share the same pile of blocks, and Touch which is specifically designed to use the stylus. Best of all there’s a ten player multiplayer mode for playing against nearby opponents in wireless mode or a four player Wi-Fi mode that you can play against anyone in the world. On top of this the whole game is filled with cameos and tunes from classic Nintendo games, from Super Mario Bros. to Metroid, for that perfect retro cool look and feel. Most exciting moment: Going up against nine other opponents in wireless mode, watching all their screens on the top screen and then winning out as the victor of them all! Since you ask: The controversial "super rotation" technique, which allows you to infinitely spin a block before placing it, is actually the idea of the original Tetris license holders and Nintendo, and anyone else that makes a Tetris game, is contractually obligated to include it in the game. The bottom line: The best version of Tetris for years and another top Wi-Fi game for the DS. Harrison Dent Tetris DX

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
In Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, players were introduced to the Manual—a move that greatly revolutionised the series' gameplay. This instalment introduces the Revert, and while it isn't as significant an addition as the Manual, it does add another layer to the already deep trick system. The game features solid graphics, but a level of detail was sacrificed in order to make the game's levels so large. There are a few moments of frame skipping and polygon clipping, but these instances are rare and don't overshadow the stellar gameplay. Career mode is as deep as ever, with eight objective-filled levels. In this single-player mode players traverse their way through some brilliantly designed courses to achieve high scores, collect the letters to the word "skate", find hidden video tapes and interact with level-specific objects. Two players can participate in the five multiplayer mini-games, which include King of the Hill, Horse, and Trick Attack. There's no reason for fans of sports, action and platform games not to have this title; this game will satisfy them all. —Raymond M Padilla Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4
Curiously, the graphics are still not particularly good, with the same slightly muddy, undefined look to them that the developers presumably now think is all part of the fun. They have however thankfully realised that having time limits for the levels was an unnecessary limitation and, except for a few specific missions, you've now got all the time in the world to graze your knees and cave in your skull. Add in a new and improved online mode and you've got everything the discerning extreme sportsman could desire. It is, as the kids on the street apparently say, "sick". —David Jenkins This review refers to the PS2 version of the game. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4
Tony Hawk's Underground
The idea this time round is that you start off on the streets with nothing but your board to keep you company. Start skating around, pulling off tricks and sooner or later you'll be spotted; then you start to make your way up the boarding world. That's easier said than done, of course, with a bigger selection of tricks to learn and pull off. The upshot though is that the game presents a high quality, long-term challenge as you slowly make your way to the top. Something that doesn't work quite as well is the ability to pick up your board and explore on foot. It's theoretically supposed to make things more flexible, but ultimately accounts for the game's few slower moments. However, ultimately Tony Hawk's Underground works spectacularly well. Its gameplay is sublime, the multi-player modes are dangerously addictive and it scores immensely in the value for money stakes too. Easily one of the most playable games on any console out there, it holds appeal for gamers at all levels of experience. —Simon Brew Top Gear Rally

Trauma Center: Second Opinion
Now everyone can be a brain surgeon as you pick up scalpel and forceps to battle the full horrors of an infected intestine, medical terrorism and angry anime nurses! The lowdown: The original Trauma Center is already one of the most original and fun games on the Nintendo DS but although this is largely just a remake of that game it's more than welcome on the Wii. As accurate a simulation of real medicine as Phoenix Wright is of law (i.e. not very much) you'll nevertheless have great fun repairing hapless patients with ailments that start of as simple tumours to bizarre fights against evil terrorist nanobots. What really makes the game though is the simple intuitiveness of the controls, with the precise movement of your scalpel being one of the best endorsements of the Wii Remote's accuracy. The game's no push over though and you'll need to employ the mysterious bullet time style "healing touch" to make sure you don't end up the Doctor Death of Hope Hospital. Most exciting moment: Although the game is a remake of the DS it does include several new missions, an extra playable character, new operation types and new surgical tools - including a defibrillator which demands a shout of "clear!" every time you use it. Since you ask: A surgery game was one of the first styles of games hinted at in an introductory video for the Wii, which also showed people appearing to play games involving fishing, cooking and playing the drums - amongst other non-typical games concepts. The bottom line: Major surgery has never been so much fun as the Wii and DS line-up combine.-HARRISON DENT Trauma Center: Under the Knife

Viewtiful Joe [CIB]
Viewtiful Joe is a side-scrolling adventure with highly stylised cel-shaded graphics that look literally like a moving comic book. The big gimmick with the gameplay is the "viewpoint" fighting system, which lets you speed up or slow down time whenever you want. The system works beautifully and allows for the kind of balletic, slow-motion fighting that Enter The Matrix utterly failed to deliver. The viewpoint fighting is more than just a gimmick, as many items in the game, from bad guys to bullets, move too fast for the human eye to see. Slow down time, though, and you can duck and weave your way through a hailstorm of missiles and take down your enemies before they've had a chance to even move. The only problem with Viewtiful Joe is that it's so unremittingly hard. It's heartily advised you choose the "Kids" difficulty level, because even that is anything but child's play. The various puzzles can also be a bit tricky but they're all internally consistent and don't come anywhere near spoiling this superb game. —David Jenkins Virtua Striker 3 2002
It's hard not to feel this is an opportunity missed. Virtua Striker 2002 has oodles of play modes for single and multi-player action, but there's something unsatisfying about the playing experience. The lack of proper challenges makes tackling an awkward affair and team members either slide dramatically across the turf or produce some kind of nervous tic which throws the opponent away from the ball. And matters don't improve when the other side gain possession. Time after time a computer-controlled friendly player will dash perilously close to a loose ball only to snatch himself away and run off in a random direction—it's frustrating to say the least. If you can bear its inadequacies, Virtua Striker 2002 can be very good fun—it's certainly the most hilarious footy game for the 'Cube to date—but those looking for a more realistic representation should stick with the FIFA or ISS series. —Chris Russell Virtua Tennis 2009

Wario Ware: Smooth Moves
Wario is back with more new ways to use the Wii Remote than you'd ever imagine. Whether it's balancing it on your head or chopping vegetables in mid-air this is one game where you'll literally never know what's coming next. The lowdown: Anyone that's played a previous Wario Ware game will have some idea of the insanity that awaits in this first Wii outing. Just like the portable versions the game contains over two hundred micro-games, most of which don't last any longer than five seconds. This provides the perfect excuse to use the Remote in as many ridiculous ways as possible, with each game using one of a dozen or so different ways of holding it, from the "waiter", where you hold it flat on your palm, to the "hula hoop" where you hold it against your hip. The actual games involve everything from picking someone's nose in 3D, to balancing an umbrella on your finger tips and replacing a granny's false teeth. It's just as silly as it sounds but easily the most instantly enjoyable game on the Wii. Most exciting moment: Like the GameCube game WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$, Smooth Moves also has a multiplayer mode for up to four people, as you both take turns with the single player games and join in together with specially made mini-games. Since you ask: Although there are a number of different modes the main single player campaign still includes a longer "boss battle" at the end of each set of themed micro-games. The only one that's been shown so far involves driving a car around using the remote and trying to avoid monkeys and cows on the road. The bottom line: The Wii Remote gets a through workout in the funniest Wario Ware yet.- HARRISON DENT Wave Race

Wave Race: Blue Storm
Although the graphics have certainly been improved, some of the other changes in Blue Storm are more controversial. The biggest problem is the extremely heavy handling of the jet skis. It's no doubt more realistic but to the average player it initially seems like you're driving a water-borne milk float, such is your craft's total inability to take corners at speed. Things improve with practice—especially if you choose the English guy's jet ski with the improved handling—but it does severely limit the game's initial appeal. The cheaty, Mario Kart 64-style AI doesn't help matters either. All this isn't enough to ruin the party, though, and this is still a top notch and, most unusually of all, original racer.—David Jenkins Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey

Wetrix
Gameplay consists of arranging various descending pieces of land in an attempt to raise or lower the terrain that covers the main game board. This creates areas where lakes can form once the water finally starts falling from the sky. Sound strange? It is, but it's also a lot of fun at first. The water graphics are good, and things get hectic as water begins spilling over your carefully created pools and you have to scramble to mend the breaches. To add to the action, the game includes power-ups that let you get rid of some of the water. However, you'll have to act quickly to catch the power-ups as they fall from above. Unfortunately, Wetrix gets old after a few days of play, and it doesn't have the instant yet long-term addictive qualities of a classic puzzle game like Tetris. But it's still a good time and a good buy if you are a big fan of games in this genre. —T. Byrl Baker Who Wants To Be A Millionaire

View larger. Track your progress against friends. View larger. The Wii Fit Balance Board The primary tenet of Wii Fit is balance. Your centre of balance, the point between your left and right sides when you stand upright, has a lot to do with your health. Those without an even centre of balance will be unnaturally compensating for this imbalance, which causes their posture to become misaligned, increasing the possibility of putting unnecessary strain on their bodies. This is where the Wii Balance Board comes in. Similar in appearance to a step aerobics board, the Wii Balance Board is much, much more. Easily capable of supporting weights up to a maximum of 300 pounds, it is sturdy and precise, able to measure weight and register pressure accurately when placed on a variety of flat surfaces. This advanced level of sensitivity allows for both the wide range of activities found in the Wii Fit software as well as the board's amazing ability recognize individual players by their weight alone. Getting Started: Create a Profile Before you jump into doing exercises and activities, you'll start by creating a profile. This is done easily and intuitively by simply choosing a Mii, entering your height and age information, and doing a few quick tests that will serve as a baseline for your new Wii fitness regimen. These tests are:BMI Check: BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that is the standard used by agencies such as the World Health Organization and the National Institute of Health. To check your BMI, you'll enter your height then stand on the Wii Balance Board and let it read your weight.Wii Fit Age: After you've checked your BMI, you'll do a basic balance test and find out your current Wii Fit Age. This basic balance test measures how well you can control your left and right balance. Based on the results, you'll be assigned a Wii Fit Age. Four Categories of Fun Once you have created your profile it's time to have some fun. Wii Fit features four main categories of exercises to choose from: Strength Training, Aerobics, Yoga and Balance Games. The flight sim might be a dying breed on other consoles but the Wii's already got one to its name with Wing Island - but just as you'd expect it's not exactly your run-of-the-mill jet combat simulator. The lowdown: If there's one game Nintendo fans have been dying to see get a new sequel it's PilotWings and that's pretty much exactly what Hudson are providing with this game. Like PilotWings the game presents a huge range of largely laid back missions for you to dabble in, from photographing flocks of birds to air dropping medicine crates. There are a few combat missions, but even these tend to be non violent, such as popping balloons or blowing up rock formations. The Wii Remote is great for controlling your flying machine of choice, with the controller being held something like a joystick, with the pointer aimed at the screen. Barrel rolls and the loop-the-loops are simply a matter of flicking your wrist in the right direction and fun enough that just flying around the large levels is perfectly entertaining on its own. Most exciting moment: Although most of the missions have you flying a single aircraft some of them put you in charge of a whole formation of five aeroplanes. The controls are the same but tight turns and manoeuvres in enclosed spaces become that much more difficult - and exciting. Since you ask: Developer Hudson Soft, creator of the long-runing Bomberman series, are one of the most prolific early supporters of the Wii, with more then seven titles already scheduled. They're also working with Nintendo on a new entry in the popular Mario Party franchise for Wii. The bottom line: PilotWings returns in all but name with the Wii's first flight sim.- HARRISON DENT Winnie The Pooh: Rumbly Tumbly Adventure
Wipeout, Pt.3: Wipeout 64
Wolfenstein 3D
For the uninitiated, the game is a maze-set first-person shooter with 60-odd levels, four weapons and four difficulty levels; the aim of the game is to wipe out Castle Wolfenstein's Nazi henchmen and make your escape. The controls are dead simple—turn with the D-pad, strafe with the shoulder buttons, shoot with A, open doors with B, change weapons with Select. The graphics and sound seem basic when compared to most of the GBA's other titles, but the gameplay's as good as it ever was; mowing down Nazis—and their dogs—then collecting their treasure and finding secret stashes of loot and health packs. They may not be the most cerebral of pursuits, but it's undeniably good fun. The only real downside is the lack of mid-level checkpoints—having to start the level from scratch each time you die can be very irritating. But perhaps the most lasting impression you'll take away from Wolfenstein 3-D is a sense of wonder that PC games have evolved so far technically in just 10 years—just what will we be playing on our handhelds in 2012? —Rikki Price World Sports Party
Worms Blast
In Bust-A-Move you have to shoot different coloured bubbles up the screen so that they collide with the large collection of bubbles that are slowly descending towards you. If you connect bubbles of the same colour together then they disappear, and the idea is to clear the whole screen of the little multi-coloured spheres. Worms Blast is exactly the same except that you shoot different coloured bullets at coloured blocks. So, Worms Blast is pretty much identical—except that it's no fun. Having to move your character left and right across the screen is annoying and the controls, ridiculously simple as they are, still manage to be fiddly and counter-intuitive. Unless you have a thing for cartoon invertebrates there's not much point buying Worms Blast considering that Bust-A-Move is still available and cheaper, so try that out instead—it really is much better. —David Jenkins Wreckless
