FIFA 2001
Electronic Arts FIFA 2001 is the latest game in the massively popular football franchise from Electronic Arts and like its predecessors it sure to find its way into many footy fans stockings this Xmas. With over 60 international teams on offer, you can take your team through a number of different game types including playing a one-off friendly or attacking the full World Cup. While these may seem appealing, you are also tempted by the inclusion of the major European and American leagues—15 in total. The Season option, on the other hand, lets you play up to three consecutive campaigns with relegation and promotion available in a FIFA game for the first time and versions of the UEFA and European Champions League available. The gameplay is not radically different from FIFA 2000, but there is some new player animation with a lot of attention placed on the keepers. First-time players will find it very easy to get into, though the learning curve through the games difficulty levels can be surprisingly steep. With a limited transfer system and team tactics everything can be customised and changed on the fly as the game progresses. The graphics have been polished and the game runs very smoothly. FIFA 2001 is full of detail: key stadiums are accurately modelled and each team has the correct sponsors logo on their shirt with the exception of Arsenal for some reason.FIFA 2001 is probably still the best pick-up-and-play football game available. It may lack the depth of the ISS series, but for immediate accessibility it is still the champion. —Michael Bartley

FIFA 2002: 2002 FIFA World Cup
Electronic Arts Determined to squeeze every last ounce out of the FIFA license, Electronics Arts have released their footy sim for the Xbox—2002 FIFA World Cup. Taking the essence of FIFA 2002 and modifying it for the world's greatest tournament, EA have restricted the scope of the game, offering only two modes of play (full tournament and friendly) and the 32 teams which are taking part in the tournament. That said, it still plays the same as its older brother and the look and feel given by the inclusion of the new stadia and enhanced sound effects really brings the game to life.

Owners of the full-fat 2002 game will want to think very seriously before paying out for this "special" release, but for those who've not come across the franchise before, or those looking for a break from Pro Evolution Soccer, this game has entertainment by the sack load. Graphically it looks the business and the pre-match build-ups are eye candy to please any jaded palette. In-game, too, the player graphics are nicely detailed and there are some wonderful individual animations covering all manner of complex looking moves, swerves and dives. In fact, the only thing that really lets the side down is the speed of the game during more hectic midfield moments, when the frame rate stutters appallingly—a little poor for a game that's been through so many development revisions. Control is nice and simple and it's a breeze to pick this title up and start booting the pigskin around the park within a couple of minutes, though mastering the finer points of ball control and the elusive "lob in" will take a good deal longer.

2002 FIFA World Cup really does have a lot going for it. It's not as technical as the ISS games, and it doesn't have the scope or gameplay modes of FIFA 2002, but it does have atmosphere in abundance. If you're a newcomer to the franchise or you've missed the last couple of major releases then it's certainly worth a look. —Chris Russell

FIFA 2002: FIFA Football 2002
Electronic Arts The latest version of the PSone's most popular football game is sure to have many gamers eager in anticipation. Unfortunately, with FIFA Football 2002, they're going to be severely disappointed. It's instantly clear when you get into the game proper that the resources notoriously ploughed into the FIFA series are sadly lacking here, with alternative formats benefiting from EA Sports' usual attention to detail. That leaves first-generation PlayStation owners with a tatty game that suffers from jerky scrolling, poor graphics and disappointing gameplay.

The infamous new passing method, making its debut in the 2002 edition, suffers from the lack of flow in the game. It's that too that makes sliding tackles very tricky to judge, and, ultimately, makes FIFA Football 2002 a chore to play. It's a shame, as the front end is the usual sleek affair, and the intro cut scenes are a great deal more professional. You can't help feeling that there is a playable game buried in there somewhere, and there are certainly plenty of league and cup options to keep you busy. Yet when games such as ISS Pro Evolution 2 manage to squeeze so much out of the original PlayStation technology, it's hard to find a compelling reason to fork out for this tepid, lazy update that's a step backwards for the FIFA series. —Simon Brew
FIFA 2002: FIFA Football 2002
Electronic Arts In the video games Premier League the winner in terms of sales has always been EA's FIFA series. Purists prefer Konami's ISS games, which offer a more refined "realistic" approach than FIFA's end-to-end goal-fests, but now, not content with being number one in the market, the latter game has decided it wants to be loved by serious footy fans everywhere and has radically overhauled its gameplay concept.

The idea is that no longer can you just ping the ball from end to end with a simple press of a button or sprint down the wing and score from the perfect cross each time. Judicious use of the Dual Shock controller ensures that crosses, passes and shots are defined by the amount of force applied and the left analogue stick determines the direction of the ball. Although this adds a welcome depth, FIFA veterans may find the new control system over-elaborate and fiddly.

Unfortunately, the addition of in-depth gameplay comes at the expense of graphical quality—FIFA Football 2002 is a big step down from last year's version. Even high-profile players like Beckham are virtually unrecognisable and although there are some neat new animations the overall effect is of an enhanced PSone game rather than a genuine next-generation product. But the players are real, all the leagues are present and correct (including the Austrian and Korean leagues for the soccer completists), and the multi-player mode is perfect for after-the-pub footy action. As usual the game will sell in bucketloads but is unlikely to replace ISS (now in the guise of Pro Evolution Soccer) as the cognoscenti's game of choice. —Michael Bartley

FIFA 2003: FIFA Football 2003
Electronic Arts FIFA Football 2003 may well be approached with scepticism: will the gameplay changes and revamp really be something new and dynamic, or just another yearly upgrade? Well, this edition is a surprise—not only are the animation and presentation top notch as usual, but it is really playable and the ball and player physics seem 100 times better than before.

EA have done their homework. The 10th year of FIFA doesn't just see the player names updated and few tweaks here and there—it's more of a mini revolution. There are two new modes of play, simulation and arcade play—one for the more tactical player who likes the fancy approach to play and the other for those more frenetic matches.

As usual, vast numbers of teams and players are included (still no Oxford Utd, though—Oxford Ed); all the big name players are instantly recognisable, Edgar Davids being one fantastic example. The tons of extra features include a new European tournament and loads of DVD clips. —Laurent S Hall

FIFA 2004 - UEFA Euro 2004 Portugal
Electronic Arts Marrying the glitz and glamour of the Euro 2004 football tournament to a highly playable game, UEFA Euro 2004 once again finds EA Sports in fine form. The idea, unsurprisingly, is that you take your nation of choice through the qualifying stages and numerous friendlies, before heading for the finals themselves with the aim of lifting the trophy. And, thanks to the quality of the gameplay, its a journey youd be hard-pressed not to enjoy. Few times can you share such joy with your screen as when your fluid, flowing move has resulted in that crucial last-minute winner. The game is chock-full of moments such as this, and it all serves as a very strong tie-in to the tournament. There are one or two caveats, though. The first is that this is a slightly evolved version of FIFA 2004, albeit with some welcome, if unessential new features. The biggest of these is a morale system, where more confident players tend to do better, while those on the receiving end of hammerings and bookings dont. Some additional skills, options and graphical tweaks pretty much see out the rest of the changes. The second caveat is that the game, by nature of being tied into the tournament itself, doesnt offer very prolonged long-term appeal, although undoubtedly youll enjoy yourself while it lasts. In short though, UEFA Euro 2004 is a very good, superbly presented and enjoyable football game. And while those who bought FIFA 2004 may not be getting quite the same value for money out of it as everyone else, its ultimately hard to quibble about the quality of the football on offer. —Simon Brew
FIFA 2004: FIFA Football 2004
Electronic Arts The annual battle of the football games comes round again, and this time the competition is fiercer than it's been in some years. What a year, then, for the longest running of them all to play its trump card and put in its finest performance to date. For with new added features, and a general all-round polish, FIFA 2004 becomes a must-buy.

The big innovation this time round is the off-the-ball feature, and this really is a stroke of genius. It's fiddly to get to grips with, but basically when attacking, you can control a separate player as they run into space, ready to take receipt of a killer pass that splits the opposition defence open. It takes a little working at, but when it comes off, you'll be smug beyond belief. The feature itself genuinely adds an added tactical edge to a game that used to be wrongly dismissed as an arcade-style kickabout.

On top of that, there are the things that FIFA does better than anyone. The presentation, audio and visuals are superb from top to bottom, and the improvements to the club management side boost the game's longevity.

Most importantly of all, at the heart of all these improvements is a highly playable football game that's very easy to get into yet suitably challenging to master. And in multi-player mode, it's even better. —Simon Brew

FIFA 2005: FIFA Football 2005
Electronic Arts From the off, it's fair to concede that the world's best-selling action football game, FIFA 2005, hasn't changed an awful lot in the past twelve months. Those who bought the last version will be entirely familiar with the game's look and feel, and could rightly argue that once more this new version is an evolution at best. But it's still quite a good one. The FIFA series has, in recent times, got into the habit of adding one big new feature each year, with middling successes. Last year's, if you remember, was the impressive-but-tricky off the ball control. This year we get a simpler addition, but a far more effective one. It's the first touch option, and it genuinely can open the game up, whether you choose to use it for a quick pass or tighter control. And it works because it's straightforward—there's no endless messing around with buttons to get it moving.

The rest of the game attracts the usual annual pros and cons. Its presentation is second-to-none, and for a more attacking-focused game, you need look no further. What's more, the single player mode is substantial, and very long lasting. The downside is the Pro Evolution Soccer franchise which is, and remains, the choice of the hardcore gamer. Yet that doesn't mean there's not fun to be had with FIFA 2005. Quite the contrary, in fact. Every year, FIFA can be relied on to provide an entertaining, engrossing and long-lasting football game. Thus, whilst it might be in second place, and this latest release doesn't change that, it remains a strong and worthwhile runner-up.—Simon Brew

FIFA 2006 - World Cup Germany 2006
Electronic Arts In a nutshell:
The official game of the 2006 World Cup has all the stadiums, players and kits of the real thing, but the biggest surprise is that it actually improves upon the usual FIFA gameplay too. So if England does not win in real life, you can at least make sure they do in the virtual world.

The lowdown:
. In previous years, FIFA Word Cup games have meant little more than a cut down version of the existing FIFA game, however this version features not just the 32 teams from the finals but the chance to play as any of the other 95 countries from the qualifying rounds. There’s even the option to replay historic World Cups – although only a handful of older players are included. In terms of gameplay things have been noticeably speeded up and there’s even an alternative control system that exactly mimics rival Pro Evolution Soccer. PES fans will still be suspicious but this really is the best FIFA yet.

Most exciting moment:
Reliving the glory of 1966 with the current England team and then going on to do the same thing in this year’s Cup as well!

Since you ask:
Many of the England team, including Wayne Rooney, claim to be video games fans and many have mentioned playing the FIFA games between real matches.

The bottom line:
A genuine improvement on FIFA 06 with the usual top notch EA presentation.

Electronic Arts In a nutshell:
It’s been a national institution for over decade now and the latest FIFA game is finally here, with lots more attacking gameplay, more customisation, more attention to detail, more online and offline multiplayer options and the deepest manager mode ever for the series.

The lowdown:
With Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer series snapping at its heels with ever more voracity, suddenly it’s FIFA that’s got something to prove. The answer for this year’s edition is a new emphasis on attacking play, with a suite of new tackling, dribbling and shielding controls. Naturally, it’s got all the new stats for the 05/06 season, but with the new create-a-player option you can change the facts to fit you. Also new is a 15 year career manager mode to prove your footballing skills don’t end when you’re off the pitch.

Most exciting moment:
Winning the treble after 15 years of hard graft in the all new career mode.

Since you ask:
According to cover star Wayne Rooney, the FIFA series is popular with many other premiership players, especially when travelling together for away matches.

Electronic Arts In a nutshell:
It’s the game football fans wait all year for and to usher in the next generation EA Sports have given FIFA its biggest revamp in years, changing not just the way it looks but the way it plays in what aims to be the ultimate marriage of realism and fun.

The lowdown:
Every new FIFA game gets its expected improvements in graphics and presentation but this year the success of Pro Evolution Soccer seems to have driven EA to concentrate just as much on the gameplay. As such the game features better passing, crossing and free kicks as well as greatly improved goalkeepers. There’s also a new "finesse" shot if you get the time and space to use it, while every kick is calculated in terms of space, composure and technique so that it’s accuracy is determined by exactly what’s happening on the pitch and not just some random factor. Add in completely new ball physics, more than 510 teams, 27 leagues, 4,000 licensed players and all new international crowd reactions and you’ve got EA’s most concerted attempt yet to make the definitive football game.

Most exciting moment:
As well as all the individual improvements to ball and player control many of the game’s best strikers have their own signatures moves and free kicks, such as Ronaldinho, Frank Lampard and Roberto Carlos. This includes the ability to, quite literally, bend it like Beckham.

Since you ask:
As befits its global reach FIFA 07 has perhaps the most multinational soundtrack ever in video games, with everything from Argentinean rock band Bersuit Vergarabat to Spain’s The Pinker Tones and German group d.o.c.h.! (As well as Britbands such as Muse and The Young Punx.)

The bottom line:

FIFA gets serious in its attempt to out-football Pro Evolution Soccer
